Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst determine whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows over time. A fixed offset usually calls for adjusting the OBS source timing for future output or shifting the audio track in an existing file. Progressive drift points instead to timing issues such as mismatched sample rates, separate audio-device clocks, or missed frames. Compare the local recording with YouTube playback before deciding where the problem enters the workflow.
“Pre-recorded YouTube stream” can mean either an OBS recording uploaded as a regular video or a pre-recorded file played through OBS into a YouTube Live encoder. These are different delivery paths; YouTube’s live-encoder guidance does not establish that YouTube causes or automatically repairs sync problems in ordinary uploaded videos.
Identify the delivery path and the shape of the mismatch
Uploaded OBS recording
In this workflow, OBS creates a local recording and you upload that file to YouTube. Play the local file first. If it is already out of sync, focus on capture, OBS timing, and the recording; uploading another copy is unlikely to correct a fault already present in the file.
Pre-recorded file sent through OBS to YouTube Live
Here, OBS plays a file into a live encoder workflow. Compare a local copy with the live output, and make a private test that includes representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion in its live encoder settings guidance. That advice is for live encoder configuration; it does not establish a special sync defect or fix for every pre-recorded stream.

Constant offset or progressive drift?
Use a clear visual and audio event, such as a clap or a sharply articulated spoken consonant, near the beginning and near the end of the recording. If the sound-picture gap is about the same at both points, the mismatch is likely a constant offset. If it increases as the recording continues, investigate timing and clock issues rather than applying a one-time shift.
Choose the fix that matches the symptom
| What you observe | First checks | Response | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| The same offset near the beginning and end | Check whether sound leads or trails at both points | Adjust the relevant OBS source timing for future output, or shift the audio track in an editor for an existing recording | Verify the control and effect in your installed OBS version; a fixed shift is not a fix for growing drift. |
| The gap grows during a long session | Audio sample rates, separate device clocks, and OBS statistics | Align sample rates and inspect missed-frame statistics; consider routing separate sources through a common interface only if it suits your setup | Device-clock explanations are from a third-party diagnostic, not a guaranteed cause. |
| Local recording is aligned, but YouTube playback differs | Confirm whether you uploaded a file or sent OBS to YouTube Live | Keep the local file for comparison; for a live encoder workflow, make a representative private test | YouTube’s cited guidance covers live encoder testing, not every uploaded-video sync case. |
| Recording is damaged after an interruption or awkward to edit | Check the recording container and the target editor’s compatibility | Record to MKV and remux to MP4 if needed; consider fragmented MP4/MOV when compatible with your workflow | Changing containers is not established as a universal sync repair. |
| OBS reports performance trouble or missed frames | Rendering and encoding load | Reduce scene complexity or game load, then record another test | Performance trouble is one avenue to investigate, not an explanation for every sync fault. |
Fix a constant audio offset
For future OBS output
- Make a short test recording with a clear visible-and-audible event.
- Determine whether the sound leads the picture or trails it. Do not change timing until you know the direction.
- Adjust the timing of the relevant audio source in OBS, then make another short recording and compare the event. OBS controls can vary by version, so confirm the current control in your installation rather than relying on an assumed menu path.
- Check another event later in the test. If the gap grows, stop using a fixed offset as the remedy and investigate drift instead.
For an existing recording
Open the file in an editor that allows the audio track to be moved relative to the video. Shift the track by the measured amount in the appropriate direction, then check sync near both the start and end before exporting. If the offset changes over time, a single track shift will align one point but leave another out of sync; investigate the underlying timing problem or use an editing workflow that can correct drift.

Investigate audio drift over time
Align sample rates
Check the sample rate selected in OBS and the rates used by the audio devices in the recording path. Set them to match, then record a test long enough to reveal whether the gap continues to grow. Sample-rate alignment is a diagnostic step, not proof that a mismatch is the cause.
Consider separate device clocks
When audio comes from multiple independent USB devices, their clocks may not remain perfectly aligned during a long recording. A third-party OBS audio-drift diagnostic identifies this as a possible cause. For a setup where separate sources are drifting, routing them through a common audio interface may be worth considering; it is not necessary for a constant offset and is not a guaranteed cure.

Check OBS statistics and system load
Look at OBS statistics for skipped or missed frames during the session. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide discusses reducing rendering and encoding load, including simplifying scenes and limiting game frame rate. Retest after changing one relevant load factor at a time. Network dropped frames during a live broadcast are not interchangeable with every local recording sync problem.
Compare the local file with YouTube
- Play the saved OBS file locally and check the same clear event near the beginning and end.
- Play the YouTube version and compare those events with the local copy.
- If both versions are out of sync in the same way, investigate capture and recording first.
- If the local file is aligned but the YouTube version differs, preserve both copies and identify whether the YouTube version came from an ordinary upload or a live encoder workflow.
- For a live encoder path, run a private test with representative movement and audio, as described in YouTube’s live encoder guidance. Do not assume that guidance proves a cause or correction for an ordinary uploaded file.
Choose a recording container for safer recovery
OBS recommends MKV for recordings because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. If your editor or upload workflow needs MP4, OBS provides File → Remux Recordings and supports automatic remuxing. The OBS Standard Recording Output Guide explains the recording and remux workflow; its Audio/Video Formats Guide describes fragmented MP4/MOV as a possible fit for compatible upload and editing workflows. Remuxing changes the container workflow; it does not, by itself, establish or repair an audio timing offset.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying one shift to progressive drift: a fixed adjustment can align one point while leaving the end wrong.
- Blaming YouTube before checking the local file: compare the recording and the YouTube version first.
- Treating remuxing as a sync fix: it changes the container, not necessarily the timing.
- Assuming every missed frame has the same cause: inspect OBS statistics and workload, but keep the diagnosis tied to what the recording shows.
- Changing several settings at once: make one targeted change and record another test so you can tell what affected the result.
