For a mostly static nature stream sourced at 30 fps, start with 1080p30: YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 14 Mbps for H.264. If your upload cannot sustain that rate reliably, try 720p30 at 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 8 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube’s general live-ingestion recommendations, not a special nature-video setting or a proven optimum for every scene.
Choose a bitrate that fits the footage and connection
Bitrate is the amount of video data your encoder sends to YouTube each second. At the same resolution and frame rate, the required rate depends partly on codec: YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance recommends different rates for H.264 and the more efficient AV1 or H.265/HEVC options. Use the recommendation for the codec you actually send.
A quiet landscape may compress more easily than a shot filled with fine, constantly moving detail. Wind-blown leaves, flowing water, rain, and camera movement can all make a scene harder to encode. The YouTube table does not set a separate rate for nature footage or for streams that run 24/7, so treat 1080p30 as a practical starting point—not a measured nature-stream optimum. Test footage with representative motion before settling on a setting.
YouTube’s recommended live video bitrates
The values below are YouTube’s recommended video ingestion bitrates, in Mbps; audio is separate. The guidance was accessed in 2026, but YouTube’s source page does not state a publication year.

For the two most likely starting resolutions, YouTube also lists minimums: at 1080p30, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 5 Mbps for H.264; at 720p30, 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 3 Mbps for H.264. Those are minimum settings, not recommended targets for the best image.
Pick the resolution and frame rate
- Stable upload and a 30 fps source: begin at 1080p30 using the matching codec recommendation in the table.
- The connection cannot sustain the 1080p30 target: step down to 720p30 and use that codec’s recommendation. A consistent lower-resolution stream is preferable to an unstable higher-rate input.
- The source is 60 fps or includes frequent motion: compare 30 and 60 fps in a representative test. YouTube’s recommended bitrate increases with frame rate; the fact that a stream shows nature does not itself establish a need for 60 fps.
- The encoder only offers H.264: use the H.264 column rather than applying an AV1/H.265 figure.
- The scene has substantial fine motion: test leaves, water, rain, and changing light where they occur in your footage. YouTube publishes no nature-specific bitrate adjustment formula.
Base resolution and frame rate on the source as well as the upload connection. YouTube can detect resolution and frame rate by default; manual selection is available through a custom stream key.

Set encoder options for YouTube
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS streaming, as YouTube specifies.
- Keyframe interval: set 2 seconds. YouTube recommends this interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current guidance also discusses HLS for cases where an encoder cannot support the specified capabilities over RTMP.
- Codec: choose a codec supported by both your encoder and the selected YouTube ingestion path. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; its listed guidance does not support AV1 for HDR.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps stereo audio, or 384 Kbps for 5.1 AAC. Add audio bitrate separately; it is not included in the video figures above.
For the exact current settings and setup details, see YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”. YouTube notes: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Test and monitor a 24/7 stream
- Check sustained upload capacity. A speed test is useful as a first check, but it does not prove that the connection will hold a live stream continuously. Test the actual encoder and connection long enough to expose instability; no universal bandwidth reserve is established by YouTube’s bitrate table.
- Send representative footage. Include the kinds of movement and audio the stream will actually contain. For nature footage, test foliage, moving water, weather, and day-to-night changes when available.
- Review stream health and messages. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and after launch, and adjust the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the input is unstable.
- Plan for unattended operation. A 24/7 broadcast needs ongoing monitoring and a recovery plan. YouTube’s cited bitrate guidance does not prescribe a particular failover system.
YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions. The encoder’s ingest bitrate is therefore not the playback bitrate every viewer receives.
