To run recorded classes as a continuous YouTube live stream, enable live streaming on your channel, connect a supported encoder or cloud service in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, and use a feed that can repeat your recordings continuously. YouTube provides the live ingest setup and encoding guidance; looping and automatic restart controls depend on the encoder or service you choose. Test the complete setup before making it public, and keep separate on-demand uploads if students need dependable access to individual lectures.
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If you have never enabled live streaming, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
2. Choose how the recorded classes will be fed to YouTube
For a produced recording feed, use encoder streaming. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; professional-grade hardware is a possible choice for higher-production events, not a requirement for a lecture stream. The important requirement is that your chosen encoder or service explicitly supports continuously feeding and repeating recorded files. Do not assume that creating a scheduled YouTube event provides a playlist loop or automatic recovery.
- Local software encoder: processing runs on your computer, so the computer, encoder, and internet connection need to remain available. Confirm the software’s current file-loop, playlist, and restart behavior.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: a separate hardware option that can suit production workflows. It is optional; YouTube also describes software encoding.
- Cloud 24/7 service: processing runs with a cloud provider rather than your local computer. YouTube identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, but its guidance does not document product-specific looping controls or compare service reliability, prices, or features.
For a lecture channel, decide whether the broadcast should repeat one class, cycle through a sequence, or follow a day-long schedule. Check that the tool handles transitions and resumes as you expect; those behaviors are vendor-dependent.

3. Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder setup.
- Enter those values in your encoder or cloud service’s YouTube connection settings. Follow the provider’s current instructions for selecting the recorded-video feed and enabling its repeat or playlist behavior.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before publishing the stream or directing students to it. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the server URL and stream-key connection.
4. Set the video, audio, and connection for a stable feed
Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain, using YouTube’s current settings table rather than a one-size-fits-all bitrate. For lecture recordings, match the source where practical; a higher setting is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or buffering.
- Video codec: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate mode: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Test content: check representative speech, slides, and any movement in the classes, not just a static opening frame.
Use the values for your chosen output resolution in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance.

When HLS may make sense
YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, with higher latency than RTMP. Its HLS setup requires HTTPS, TS segments from 1 to 4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Unless your production needs call for HLS, use the simpler supported path your encoder and YouTube configuration can sustain. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
5. Test before students depend on the stream
Run a private or unlisted test with a representative class recording before announcing a public schedule. Check the feed at the encoder and in YouTube’s preview, then monitor the stream from a separate device or browser as a viewer would.

- Confirm speech is audible and in sync with the picture; check slide text and video clarity on a phone and a larger screen.
- Leave upload bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends 20% beyond the stream’s bitrate.
- Check that the stream is accessible on the intended watch surfaces and that its title, description, and visibility are correct.
- Observe a transition between recordings, if using a playlist, and verify whether the service repeats or resumes the feed as configured.
- Monitor the encoder, network, and YouTube preview for interruptions. Decide in advance who will respond and how the feed will be restarted if it stops.
- If saving a local archive, check available disk space and watch its growth during the test.

6. Plan lecture replays separately from the live broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not guarantee a complete archive for a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours. If students need reliable replay of each class, upload the lectures separately as on-demand videos and organize them into a playlist; treat the continuous stream as a separate viewing option. Copyright and channel policy checks
Before scheduling the feed, confirm that you have the rights to stream every recording and any music, images, clips, or other third-party material inside it. A class recording being available to enrolled students does not by itself establish permission for a public continuous broadcast. Review YouTube’s current rules and the rights attached to each component; do not rely on a live stream as a way to avoid copyright enforcement. Also make sure the presentation and channel meet YouTube’s applicable policies. For a class that includes licensed materials, get permission or remove the material before streaming.
Common problems and fixes
- You cannot start a live stream: verify the channel and confirm live access is enabled; a first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check for a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube receives no signal: confirm the encoder is running, the stream URL and key match the current Live Control Room details, and the encoder is using a protocol and settings supported by YouTube.
- Video stalls or drops frames: reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the upload connection can sustain, then test again with the recommended upload headroom.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: check the encoder’s audio input, selected AAC or MP3 encoding, and sync settings; test with a representative recording before going public.
- The playlist stops or has gaps: check the selected product’s repeat, transition, and restart controls. YouTube’s standard encoder setup does not establish how a particular product loops files.
- The broadcast stops after a disconnect: check the encoder or cloud service’s recovery behavior and its status logs. YouTube’s general setup guidance does not promise automatic recovery for every encoder.
- The full day is not available as a replay: a continuous stream longer than 12 hours is not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule. Publish individual classes separately when full replay access matters.
