You can run a continuous YouTube broadcast from a Windows PC by connecting OBS Studio to a stream in YouTube Studio, choosing settings your internet connection and hardware can sustain, and monitoring the stream. But OBS’s minimum system requirements do not certify a PC for nonstop operation, and a YouTube stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be archived. What you need before going live
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. These are OBS’s published Windows baseline requirements, not a guarantee that the machine can stream your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene. OBS warns that performance also depends on the encoder and scene complexity. OBS system requirements.
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16, and first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Enable access before your planned start. YouTube live-stream requirements.
- A stable, tested internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream settings, plus a power arrangement suitable for long operation.
- OBS Studio and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Meeting the PC baseline is only a compatibility starting point. Test the actual setup with representative motion and audio before depending on it for an unattended broadcast.
Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s prompts for the stream title, visibility, and other event details. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key from the YouTube encoder settings. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the custom server option as appropriate, then enter the server URL and key.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a recording, or share it with people who should not broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Set up the video and audio sources in OBS, then click Start Streaming. Wait for the incoming preview and stream-health status in YouTube’s Live Control Room before starting or managing the public event there.
- Run a preflight broadcast using the same sources and settings you intend to use. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm audio, motion, and picture quality are acceptable before leaving the stream unattended.
Choose OBS settings that fit your connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds. Its guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; for the bitrate figures below, the codec is specifically H.264. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain them. Match resolution and frame rate to the content
Higher resolution and frame rate can increase encoder and network demands. Choose the quality you can sustain reliably rather than treating the highest available setting as the default. OBS notes that the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect system load. If the connection or PC struggles, lower the resolution or frame rate and test again.

Set the encoder and keyframes
Use a supported video codec and CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s audio guidance lists AAC or MP3. Use RTMPS where available for secure ingestion. Confirm that OBS’s output configuration matches the profile you tested; changing settings after the test can change the load and stream quality.
Test upload headroom, not just a speed-test peak
Test the connection under the conditions in which the PC will stream, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages while sending representative video and audio. If the stream reports problems, reduce the target bitrate or video demands, then repeat the test. A published bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee for a particular internet plan, Wi-Fi link, or time of day.

Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. For a replay you need to preserve, plan separate sessions that each stay below 12 hours and record locally as a backup; do not assume one continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete YouTube archive. Very long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. If viewers need to rewind, account for that limitation when deciding whether the event should be one continuous session or shorter broadcasts. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Make unattended operation a tested plan
OBS sends the stream, but the official setup guidance does not establish a guaranteed Windows restart or recovery procedure for unattended broadcasting. Do not assume that a Windows restart, OBS crash, power loss, or internet outage will restore the same YouTube event automatically. Before relying on 24/7 operation, test each failure on the actual PC and network, and document who or what will restore the broadcast.
- Power: Test what happens after a power interruption and verify that the PC, network equipment, and OBS return to the intended state.
- Network loss: Interrupt the connection during a test and confirm whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube receives the stream again as expected.
- OBS exit: Close OBS unexpectedly in a test and establish how it will be restarted and how you will verify the feed.
- Windows restart: Restart Windows deliberately and check whether the required sign-in, applications, sources, and stream settings return correctly. Do not treat a successful manual reconnect as proof of unattended recovery.
- Long broadcasts: Check stream health during operation, and keep a local recording if the content must be preserved.
Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems
