Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Why does my 24/7 YouTube stream stop after a few hours?” A few hours alone does not point to a YouTube time limit. The stream may have stopped because the encoder quit sending, the computer or network failed, the stream settings were wrong, or YouTube reported a specific error. Start by checking the error and its timestamp in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare it with your encoder logs and network conditions.
First, find out what actually stopped
At the next cutoff, note the time and open the stream-health area in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube displays stream status and specific error messages, including timestamps. Preserve the message and the timeline before changing settings.
- The encoder stopped: Check whether its process exited, paused, or logged an error.
- The encoder kept sending: Compare its output with the message and status shown in Live Control Room.
- The event ended on the watch page: Record that separately from whether the local encoder process stopped.
These observations distinguish a local interruption from an event or ingest problem. Duration by itself cannot identify which occurred.
Check the encoder and computer
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends using the latest encoder version and checking the encoder’s errors, CPU load, stream output, and local archive or recording if one is available.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Update the encoder, then check its logs around the cutoff time for an exit, disconnect, or output error.
- Check the host computer’s CPU load and whether the encoder was still running and producing output.
- If recording locally, verify whether the file continued growing through the incident. A missing or truncated file is useful evidence, but is not by itself a diagnosis.
- If the output and local recording show no quality problem, YouTube suggests trying another encoder as a diagnostic. That test can help isolate the source; it does not prove the original encoder is defective.
Check upload bandwidth and stability
Test upload speed under conditions representative of the live run, not only when the connection is otherwise idle. Compare the available upload capacity with the configured primary and backup stream bitrates. YouTube recommends keeping total bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% spare capacity. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream, and an interruption in connectivity can break it. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Check whether other devices or users are consuming upload capacity during the failure window.
- Look for connection drops or fluctuating upload results rather than relying on a single speed-test result.
- If upload capacity is consistently inadequate or unstable, YouTube advises contacting your internet provider.
Match format and ingest fixes to the error
Do not change codecs, endpoints, or other settings without an error that points to them. If Live Control Room reports an incorrect stream format, compare the encoder’s video and audio codecs and container with YouTube’s documented requirements. If an RTMPS connection produces a timeout or SSL error, check the stream URL supplied by Live Control Room, the protocol and port where relevant, and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting page covers these checks.

Read the exact error rather than treating every interruption as a format problem. YouTube’s live streaming error messages guidance describes error messages, timestamps, and severity; use the message shown for your stream to select the relevant fix.
Test a continuous run before relying on it
YouTube recommends testing encoder settings, checking the preview and stream health, and confirming that local archive files are growing. Include audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. For a 24/7 stream, run a planned test long enough to see whether the same failure recurs; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe one universal test duration. See YouTube’s streaming tips and live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Do not confuse stream duration with archiving or rewind
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup instructions. That is an archiving condition, not a published rule that a stream stops after a few hours. Separately, YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours in its DVR guidance. Whether a live event remains active, whether a recording is archived, and how far viewers can rewind are three separate questions.
When new equipment makes sense
YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, while noting that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. Its troubleshooting sequence begins with encoder updates, logs, CPU load, local archives, and network checks. Consider hardware only when your requirements or those checks point to a specific limitation; buying an encoder cannot be assumed to fix an unidentified outage. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and live-streaming tips.
