To repeat prerecorded podcast audio on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i option, add -re so a local file is read at normal playback speed, and send the encoded output to YouTube over RTMPS. The command depends on your files and chosen video presentation, so treat the example below as a template—not a ready-to-run command.
What you need before starting
- A computer with an FFmpeg build suitable for your operating system and the codecs you plan to use.
- A prepared media file, or a compatible combined playlist input.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream in YouTube Studio.
- The stream’s ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public command, screenshot, or log.
- Rights and permissions that cover rebroadcasting every episode and any music or other third-party material in it on YouTube Live.
The exact FFmpeg options depend on the source streams, your FFmpeg build, and whether the broadcast includes a still image, video, or another visual track. YouTube’s current guidance and the FFmpeg command-line documentation are useful references: YouTube encoder guidance, YouTube stream settings, and FFmpeg documentation.
Prepare one episode or a multi-episode playlist
Loop a single prepared file
If the complete program is already in one file, use it as the input and loop that input indefinitely. This is the simplest setup when you are happy for the same program to restart from the beginning.
Loop several episodes in order
For a sequence of episodes, first arrange the desired order as a playlist or create a combined input that FFmpeg can read. Do not assume that any files can be joined with stream copy: for that to work reliably, their stream properties must be compatible. When codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or other relevant properties differ, you may need to re-encode or use a different concat method. Check the transitions between episodes before broadcasting publicly.

Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Find the encoder connection details for that stream and note its ingest URL and stream key.
- Keep those values private. Insert them only into your local encoder configuration or a secure environment variable, not into an example you share.
- Use RTMPS as the default ingestion protocol. YouTube Help recommends it, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
Build the FFmpeg command
For one local input, the structure is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "episode.mp4" "RTMPS_INGEST_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"
This is schematic, not a tested command. Replace the bracketed options with settings that match your source and YouTube’s current ingest requirements, and replace the final placeholder with the actual RTMPS endpoint and stream key. Do not paste a real key into a public page or shared terminal transcript.

Why the options go in this order
-reis an input option that reads a local file at its media rate rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it.-stream_loop -1is also an input option. The value-1means repeat indefinitely, and it belongs before the corresponding-i.-i "episode.mp4"identifies the source input. For a playlist, use the compatible playlist or combined input you prepared.- Output options determine video and audio encoding, mapping, and container behavior. Their correct values depend on your source and chosen visual presentation; a universal setting would be misleading.
- The final destination is YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL with the stream key included as required by the encoder connection details.
Choose output settings for YouTube
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and realistic upload capacity using YouTube’s current bitrate guidance rather than copying a number that may not suit your stream.
These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or source file supports every listed codec. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers. Confirm that your FFmpeg build can encode the selected format and that the output settings match the actual streams you map.

Choose RTMPS rather than HLS for this workflow
RTMPS is the simpler default for this FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup and is the secure protocol YouTube recommends. HLS is a separate ingestion route: it requires segmented media and rolling playlists, and YouTube describes it as having higher latency than RTMP. Use HLS only if you specifically need that protocol and have configured its additional playlist and segment requirements; it is not a drop-in replacement for the RTMPS destination in the template.
Test and monitor before going public
- Start the encoder while the broadcast is still private or otherwise not public, as appropriate for your channel setup.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and confirm that both picture and audio are present.
- Check stream health and listen for clipping, silence, incorrect episode order, or unexpectedly long gaps.
- Watch representative transitions between episodes. A clean transition depends on how the playlist or combined input was prepared.
- Only make the broadcast public after the preview and health indicators are satisfactory.
Account for YouTube archive limits
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on an indefinitely running broadcast being saved as one complete video. If a usable archive matters, plan intentional stops and restarts, and check the current YouTube guidance for how the chosen stream duration affects archiving.

Rights and copyright checks
Public availability of a podcast does not mean it is free to rebroadcast. Confirm that your rights cover continuous live transmission on YouTube, including music, clips, guest contributions, and other third-party content. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material; a match can lead to a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. For licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, or the stream may still be interrupted. Whether a particular podcast contract or music license permits continuous live rebroadcast depends on the agreement and the rights holder.

Troubleshoot common failures
