To stream with FFmpeg from a Docker container on a VPS, give the container access to your media, obtain YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, and run FFmpeg in the foreground with the appropriate input and output options. Use Docker’s restart policy to bring the container back after certain exits or host restarts, and check the logs and YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a restart fixes the underlying problem.
The command depends on your source and the output YouTube expects: stream copy can avoid transcoding when the existing audio and video streams are suitable, but it cannot resize, filter, or convert them. The pattern below is configurable; there is no single command or VPS size established for every source and stream.
How the stream reaches YouTube
FFmpeg reads one or more inputs and writes to an output URL. Docker runs FFmpeg as a container process on the VPS; the container sends the outgoing stream to YouTube. If your input is a file on the VPS, Docker must be given access to that host file. If the input is available over the network, configure FFmpeg to read that source instead.
First decide whether FFmpeg should copy the existing streams or decode and encode them. FFmpeg documents -c copy as stream copying: it copies packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. It avoids a quality change from re-encoding and uses less processing than transcoding, but it cannot apply filters and may fail if the output container needs information the input does not provide. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use stream copy only if the source codecs and stream format are suitable for the intended YouTube output.
- If you need to resize, add overlays, change audio, or convert codecs, use an encoding workflow with appropriate filters and encoder settings. This requires more CPU than stream copy; the needed capacity depends on the workload.
Prepare the YouTube destination and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and obtain the current stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest instructions to configure the secure RTMPS destination in FFmpeg. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not put a real key in a public image, repository, example, or log.
- Use YouTube’s HLS ingest guide only when a supported workflow requires it, such as HDR or a codec not supported by RTMP. HLS is not a general requirement for ordinary RTMP-compatible streams.
Keep the exact ingest URL and key private. A command typed directly into a shell may be retained in shell history or visible to users with access to process information; use a suitably protected secret-handling method for your server rather than publishing credentials.
Make the media available inside Docker
For a file stored on the VPS, choose a stable host path, such as a directory dedicated to stream media, and mount it into the container. Docker bind mounts share a host file or directory with a container. They are read-write by default, so mount the media read-only when FFmpeg only needs to read it. Docker recommends the --mount form in its container run reference; see also its bind mount documentation.
For example, the mount portion of a container launch can be written as:
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/stream-media,dst=/media,readonly
Replace /srv/stream-media with the real host directory. The container sees its contents under /media. Check that the host path exists and that the container process can read the file. If the input is fetched from a network source instead, a host media bind mount may not be needed.

Build the FFmpeg command for the input
FFmpeg’s general command structure places input options before each input and output options before the corresponding output. The following is a pattern, not a universal ready-to-run command. Replace the placeholders with the actual file, options supported by your FFmpeg build, and the private RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room.
ffmpeg -re -i /media/your-video.mp4 -c copy -f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example illustrates a file input and stream copy to an RTMP-compatible output; it is valid only when the source streams and output requirements are compatible. The RTMPS endpoint is used as the destination URL. Confirm FFmpeg’s options for the chosen source and the current YouTube ingest instructions before relying on a particular command.
If you need to transcode
Replace -c copy with video and audio encoding options appropriate to the source and intended output. Add filters only when needed, such as for resizing or overlays. There is no defensible universal bitrate, resolution, encoder preset, or VPS CPU specification without knowing the source, desired output, and whether encoding is required. Validate the selected settings against YouTube’s current ingest guidance and monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube during a test stream.
If the video should repeat
A single file input does not by itself establish whether a continuous loop is desired. If you want FFmpeg to repeat a file, configure looping for the input using an option supported by your FFmpeg version and verify that the resulting stream remains healthy. For a sequence of files or a playlist, choose an input method that matches the playlist format and confirm that transitions and stream compatibility work as intended; a single-file example should not be treated as a playlist command.

Run FFmpeg as the container’s main process
Keep FFmpeg in the foreground as the container’s main process. Docker can then observe its exit status and apply the configured restart policy. Avoid wrapping the container in an unrelated process manager to restart FFmpeg inside it; Docker recommends restart policies for starting containers automatically.
Once you have an FFmpeg image available, the key parts of a run command for a file input are the read-only bind mount, foreground process, restart policy, and FFmpeg command. In this illustrative shell form, replace the image and command placeholders and supply credentials through a protected method rather than embedding a real stream key in a reusable command:
docker run -d
--name youtube-ffmpeg
--restart unless-stopped
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/stream-media,dst=/media,readonly
YOUR_FFMPEG_IMAGE
ffmpeg YOUR_INPUT_AND_OUTPUT_OPTIONS
This assumes the image contains FFmpeg and that the media path exists on the host. The restart setting is an example; select a policy based on how you want explicit stops and process failures handled.
Choose a restart policy and understand its limits
Docker supports no, on-failure[:max-retries], always, and unless-stopped. Docker’s documentation explains the policies and their manual-stop behavior in Start containers automatically.

| Policy | When it fits | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
no |
Do not automatically restart the container. | Use when an operator will handle recovery manually. |
on-failure[:max-retries] |
Restart after a failure, optionally limiting retries. | It does not restart after every kind of stop; inspect the exit and retry behavior. |
always |
Bring the container back automatically after it stops. | Consider the documented behavior after a manual stop and Docker daemon restart. |
unless-stopped |
Restart automatically unless an operator has explicitly stopped it. | Useful when an explicit stop should persist through a daemon restart. |
A restart policy does not fix an invalid key, unreadable input, unsupported codec, or network failure. A restart loop can repeat the same failure indefinitely, so check container state and logs as well as YouTube’s stream status.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep inbound network exposure to a minimum
A container that only sends an outbound stream to YouTube usually does not need a published inbound port. Docker documents that a published port such as -p 80:8080, when no host IP is specified, is exposed on all host interfaces by default. Do not add a port mapping unless a separate control or monitoring service actually needs inbound access.
If you do add such a service, publish only the required port and address, and account for both Docker’s firewall behavior and the VPS provider’s network firewall. See Docker’s run reference and firewall documentation.
Check the stream and troubleshoot failures
Validate a test stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect both FFmpeg output and Docker logs. The restart policy shows what Docker does after an exit; logs help identify why it exited.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- The container exits immediately: Check its logs and exit status. Confirm the FFmpeg command is valid, the input path is mounted at the path used in the command, and the media is readable inside the container.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the current RTMPS URL and key in Live Control Room, ensure the key has not been mistyped or exposed, and check FFmpeg’s connection errors. Confirm the VPS can make the outbound connection.
- FFmpeg reports codec or output errors: Check the source codecs and destination requirements. Stream copy cannot convert incompatible streams or apply filters; choose an encoding workflow if conversion or filtering is required.
- The stream starts but drops or becomes unhealthy: Inspect FFmpeg and container logs, then review YouTube’s stream health. Check for network interruptions and input problems before relying on automatic restarts.
- The container restarts repeatedly: Identify and fix the cause before changing retry behavior. A restart policy can relaunch a failed process but cannot repair a persistent configuration, credential, media, codec, or network problem.
- A file works on the host but not in the container: Confirm the bind mount source is the correct host path, the destination matches the FFmpeg input path, and permissions allow reading. A read-only mount is appropriate when the container should not alter media.
Choose a VPS only after defining the workload
No single VPS vendor, plan, price, CPU allocation, or bandwidth allowance follows from the title alone. Your needs depend on the source resolution and bitrate, whether FFmpeg copies or re-encodes, how long the stream runs, data-transfer terms, and the intended audience geography. Re-encoding, in particular, changes processing demand; do not size a server from a stream-copy example if your workflow applies filters or converts codecs.
Compare providers only after those requirements are known, and verify the provider’s current compute, network-transfer, and firewall terms for the specific region and plan. The VPS sources available here do not establish a provider or plan recommendation.
