How to Stream a Pre-Recorded Video as a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube Studio schedules the live event; it does not play your finished video for you. To broadcast a recording as a live stream, create or schedule an event in YouTube Studio, then send the video into it using an encoder such as OBS, a cloud playout service, or optional specialist hardware. For the straightforward do-it-yourself route, use OBS and keep the computer and internet connection running for the whole broadcast.

What you need to set up

Think of the broadcast as two connected parts: the YouTube live event (its title, time, visibility and other details) and the source that sends video and audio into that event. YouTube describes broadcasts and streams as separate resources, and its encoder workflow connects them. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide explains the distinction.

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Creators must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the planned event. See YouTube’s eligibility and getting-started guidance.
  • A finished video file, with its audio checked and rights cleared for the intended broadcast.
  • A way to send the file to YouTube: OBS on a computer, a cloud playout service, or a compatible standalone encoder.
  • The correct scheduled event and, when required by your encoder, its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel.

How to stream the recording with OBS

This local method gives you direct control of playback. The computer, OBS and its internet upload connection need to stay available throughout the broadcast.

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. Sign in to YouTube Studio and complete any channel verification or activation prompts. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as YouTube advises.
  2. Create the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live and use the Manage tab to schedule a stream. Enter the title, description, date and time, visibility and other event details. Confirm you are working with the intended scheduled event before configuring the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover scheduling and connecting.
  3. Connect OBS to the event. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if using its direct integration, or enter the stream URL and key shown for the scheduled event in YouTube Studio. Do not share or publish the key.
  4. Add the recording. In the OBS scene where the video should appear, add a Media Source and select the prepared file. Check that the video fits the canvas as intended and that its audio is audible. If you need the file to replay, configure the media source’s looping behavior and test it before the event; do not assume the file will repeat automatically.
  5. Check the scheduled start and stop behavior. Send a test signal early enough to confirm YouTube receives the right video and audio. Check whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled for the event and understand their effect: OBS community guidance notes that simply sending encoder data may not itself take a scheduled event live if those controls are not set as expected. See the OBS community guide to scheduled YouTube streams.
  6. Go live and monitor playback. At the scheduled time, verify that OBS is sending the intended file to the correct event and that YouTube indicates the stream is receiving data. Monitor the video and sound during the broadcast. When finished, stop the stream in the way appropriate to your event settings.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that threshold as a guarantee that every longer broadcast will be archived. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Cloud playout services

Upstream documents a workflow for creating a prerecorded stream, choosing YouTube, uploading a video or playlist, setting timing and playback behavior, and reviewing the event before cloud playout. Its guide distinguishes the event page from the source that plays the recording: Upstream’s prerecorded YouTube streaming guide.

OneStream Live documents selecting or uploading video, choosing YouTube as a destination, entering stream details and scheduling a broadcast. Its help pages also describe playlists, looping and sending content to an existing YouTube event. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not independent performance tests; confirm current plan limits, scheduling rules and event handoff with the provider. Standalone hardware

YouTube’s verified encoder listing identifies the AJA HELO Plus and describes optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded material without a computer. It is specialist equipment, not a requirement for an OBS or cloud workflow. Check the feature configuration and current availability with the manufacturer or seller before buying. See YouTube’s verified encoder information.

Copyright, policies and documentary footage

Prerecorded status does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube’s rules. YouTube states that “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” Use video, music, narration, photographs and other material you have the right to broadcast, including any needed live-stream or online rights. A license for one use or platform does not automatically establish permission for another. YouTube’s general guidance does not decide the specifics of every rights arrangement. Read YouTube’s live-streaming rules and eligibility guidance and resolve rights questions for your particular material before scheduling.

Troubleshooting before and during the event

  • The event is scheduled, but nothing is playing: scheduling creates the YouTube event, not a video playout source. Start OBS or the cloud service and connect it to the matching event.
  • YouTube does not receive a signal: check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the intended event, that the key has not been changed, and that the computer has an active upload connection. Keep the key private.
  • The event does not go live when OBS starts sending: review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and OBS’s scheduled-stream behavior. Test the handoff ahead of the public start time.
  • The picture works but sound is missing or wrong: play the file in OBS before the event and verify the media source and audio are included in the stream. Correct the source or audio routing, then test again.
  • The broadcast is interrupted when the computer sleeps or disconnects: the local workflow depends on the machine and connection remaining available. Prevent sleep for the duration and use a reliable connection, or choose cloud playout for unattended operation.
  • Live streaming is not available on the channel: check verification, account restrictions and activation status. Initial enablement may take up to 24 hours; allow for that lead time.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YouTube Studio turn an uploaded video into a scheduled live stream by itself?

No. Studio schedules the event; an encoder, cloud service or compatible hardware must send the video into it.

Will YouTube archive a long prerecorded broadcast?

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish the same automatic archiving for longer streams.
