How to Use VLC in OBS to Loop Videos on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop several local videos in a YouTube Live broadcast, install VLC, add OBS’s VLC Video Source to your scene, add the files to its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. For a single repeating video, OBS’s regular Media Source has its own Loop setting. You’ll also need an eligible YouTube channel, a working stream connection, and permission to broadcast every video and audio track in your files.

Choose the right OBS source

Source Best for Repeat setting VLC required?
Media Source One video file Loop No
VLC Video Source A playlist of multiple files Loop Playlist Yes

OBS describes VLC Video as a source for video and other media files that supports a playlist, unlike Media Source, which is for individual media files. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

Install VLC and add a playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC Media Player. Match its architecture to OBS. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video Source is missing in OBS, check first that VLC is installed and that the architectures match.
  2. Select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene where you want the video to appear. In the Sources dock, click + and select VLC Video Source. OBS’s source guide describes adding sources from this dock.
  3. Name the source and add your files. In the source properties, add the local videos to its playlist. Confirm the files are accessible on the computer running OBS.
  4. Set the playlist behavior. Leave Loop Playlist on to restart playback when the playlist ends. Turn off Shuffle Playlist to play files in the order listed.
  5. Check visibility and framing. Confirm the source is visible in the scene. If the picture does not fill the canvas, use OBS’s transform or fit options to size it. The VLC source also has visibility behavior settings that govern playback when the source itself is hidden in the scene; this is different from minimizing the OBS window.
  6. Check audio. Play the source and confirm its sound is routed to the intended OBS output. Watch the audio meters and listen to a test recording or stream; a visible video does not by itself confirm that viewers will hear its audio.

Loop one video instead

If you only need one file to repeat, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop in its properties. Use VLC Video Source when you need multiple files to play as a sequence and start over after the final item. The source choice and repeat controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s encoder setup requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s current live streaming requirements if you cannot start a stream.
  2. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Use the stream URL and key provided there in OBS’s streaming settings, or use the available YouTube connection workflow.
  3. Check the preview before going live. Start streaming from OBS when ready, then confirm the video and audio in the Live Control Room preview. Make the broadcast public only after the preview looks and sounds right. YouTube explains encoder setup in its stream with an encoder guide.

Choose quality, test, and monitor the stream

There is no single correct resolution or bitrate for every setup: the source footage, computer, and available upload connection all matter. YouTube advises choosing encoder quality that the connection can reliably sustain, testing with representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrates for its recommended ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec; follow the recommendation for your chosen output rather than guessing a bitrate.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Test the full scene, including playlist transitions and audio, with a local recording or an unlisted test stream.
  • Use footage with motion and audio like the actual broadcast; a static test image may not expose connection or encoding problems.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before and during the event.
  • For a long broadcast, make sure the computer remains on, the files stay available, and OBS continues encoding. A local OBS setup is dependent on that computer and its connection; YouTube’s setup guidance does not guarantee unattended operation indefinitely.

Clear rights before broadcasting

A file playing correctly in OBS does not establish that you have the rights to stream it. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content; a detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube notes that even licensed material may require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and secure the necessary rights for both video and audio before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting

What you see Likely cause What to do
VLC Video Source is not listed VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
Playlist stops after the last file Loop Playlist is off. Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
Files play in an unexpected order Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Disable shuffle and arrange the playlist in the desired order.
Picture does not fill the stream canvas The source does not match the canvas framing. Use OBS’s transform or fit options and check the result in the preview.
Video appears, but viewers cannot hear it The source audio is not reaching the intended OBS output, or its level is wrong. Check the audio meters and output routing, then make a test recording or unlisted stream and listen back.
YouTube does not show a usable preview or the stream health is poor The encoder connection may be misconfigured, the channel may not meet eligibility requirements, or the connection may not sustain the selected quality. Check channel eligibility, verify the OBS connection details in YouTube Studio, lower output demands if needed, and test again while watching stream health.
The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder YouTube may have detected third-party content. Confirm broadcast rights and, where applicable, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
