Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst, compare what your encoder shows with YouTube Studio’s incoming live preview. If the encoder preview or a local recording is black, investigate the loop file, active scene, and video source. If the encoder image looks right but YouTube’s preview is black, check the live dashboard for warnings and investigate the connection from encoder to YouTube. A stream marked “live” does not by itself show where the picture disappeared.
Find where the picture disappears
YouTube recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder and inspecting the sources routed into it. An encoder captures and compresses the material being sent to the platform; it can be connected and streaming while its video source is missing or blank. Use this first comparison to narrow the problem before changing settings or restarting repeatedly.
- Encoder preview or local recording is black: start with the loop media, active scene, and selected video source.
- Encoder preview looks correct, but YouTube Studio’s incoming preview is black: check the live dashboard for platform or rights warnings, then review encoder errors and the outbound connection.
- You cannot tell which view is wrong: check both while the stream is running. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the encoder preview and the video sources sent to it.

If the encoder preview or recording is black
Confirm the active scene and source
Check the scene currently being sent to the stream, not just a scene that looks correct in your project. Confirm that it contains the intended loop media or capture source, that the source is enabled and visible, and that it points to the intended file, window, display, game, or camera. If you use a media source, verify that it refers to the correct loop file and that playback is active.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use troubleshooting for your actual capture type
A blank game-capture source and a blank display-capture source are different problems. The relevant checks also vary by operating system; macOS screen capture, for example, has its own troubleshooting path. Identify the source type and operating system, then follow the matching guidance rather than applying a generic GPU or capture-mode change.

If the encoder looks right but YouTube does not
Check Studio for a warning before restarting
Open the live dashboard and look for a stream or rights notice. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. It says that when it identifies third-party content, “a placeholder image may replace your live stream”; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A black picture can therefore reflect a rights event rather than a failed camera, capture card, or loop file.
If your loop contains music or video you believe you are licensed to use, check its rights status. YouTube notes that a live stream can still be interrupted when the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Do not assume that possession of a license alone prevents an automated interruption.

Review encoder health and the outbound path
If Studio has no relevant rights warning, review the encoder’s errors and CPU load, and confirm it is using a current version. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder’s preview and sources; when those appear healthy, investigate the connection carrying the stream to YouTube. Trying another encoder may help isolate an encoder-specific problem, but it is a diagnostic step, not proof that the original encoder caused the black picture.
Do not treat a stream key as the default fix
A black image alone does not establish that the stream key is wrong. YouTube’s guidance recommends creating or updating a stream key when an encoder reports an error starting the stream; that is a different symptom from a successfully connected encoder sending black video. Refresh or reselect the key when the startup error or your configuration points to it, not as a universal remedy.

There is a single OBS issue report describing a black YouTube preview after a monetization-setting change, but it is an individual user report, not evidence that monetization changes generally cause black screens. Treat it as anecdotal rather than a general diagnosis: OBS Project issue #13291.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common checks and what they tell you
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Encoder preview and local recording are both black | Loop file, active scene, or selected and visible video source. |
| Encoder preview is clear, YouTube preview is black | YouTube Studio warnings, encoder errors, and the outbound connection. |
| Studio shows a third-party-content notice | Rights status of the loop’s music or video, including whether the channel is allowlisted by the rights owner. |
| Encoder reports an error starting | Follow YouTube’s startup troubleshooting, which includes creating or updating the stream key where appropriate. |
The exact encoder and version, operating system, source type, audio status, local recording, Studio notices, and loop contents all affect diagnosis. Without those details, no single cause can be identified reliably. The official guidance provides general live-stream and capture-source checks, not a loop-specific cause or a measured frequency for black screens.
