A computer running your streaming software cannot keep sending a live stream after it enters system sleep. To keep a YouTube podcast stream going, prevent the computer from sleeping for the duration of the broadcast. You can still turn off the display separately. If you need the stream to continue while your computer is asleep or unavailable, use a separately configured hardware encoder—or run an uploaded recording from the cloud.
Why system sleep stops a computer-based stream
Your computer’s streaming software encodes and sends the video and audio to YouTube. If the computer sleeps, do not expect that software to keep encoding and transmitting. YouTube settings cannot make an encoder running on a sleeping computer continue its work. Keep the machine awake for the entire broadcast, or move the encoding and transmission to another configured device or service.
Turning off the display is different from putting the computer to sleep. You can usually let the screen go dark while keeping the computer awake, which is useful for a long podcast stream.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake while streaming
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the relevant plugged-in or battery condition, set Make my device sleep after to a duration that covers the broadcast. If your device offers a setting that prevents sleep, use it while streaming. The choices available can vary by device. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance.
- Set Turn my screen off after separately if you want the display to turn off without putting the computer to sleep.
- If you will close a laptop lid, review When I close the lid in Power Options. Many laptops sleep when the lid closes, so a long sleep timeout alone may not be enough. Microsoft explains sleep and lid behavior in its PC sleep guidance.
For a long stream, keep the computer connected to power where practical. A setting for plugged-in operation does not necessarily apply when the laptop is running on battery.

Keep a Mac laptop awake with the display off
Apple documents a Battery setting named Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Turn it on when you want the display off but the Mac to remain awake, and keep the Mac connected to its power adapter. Apple notes the setting in Change Battery settings on a Mac laptop. Interface details can vary by macOS release, so check the current Battery settings on your Mac.
This setting prevents automatic sleep in the specified plugged-in situation; it does not let a Mac continue encoding while it is actually asleep.

Test and monitor the YouTube stream
- In your encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes this encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and stream health before the event begins. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; its guidance covers live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and live stream metrics.
- Keep the computer awake and the encoder running throughout the broadcast. After the event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder as well. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips.
If you need the stream to run without that computer
Use a separately configured hardware encoder
YouTube supports both computer software and standalone hardware encoders. A hardware encoder is separate equipment that can handle encoding and transmission instead of the computer’s software, but it must be set up for your stream. Confirm the specific device’s YouTube workflow, inputs, network connection, and supported stream protocol before buying. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but no particular model is established here as suitable for your setup.

Troubleshooting: the stream stopped or the screen went dark
- The stream stops when the screen turns off: Check that the computer is not entering system sleep. Screen-off and sleep timeouts are separate controls in Windows 11; on a Mac, confirm the documented power-adapter setting is enabled if applicable.
- The stream stops when you close the laptop: Check the lid-close action. Many laptops sleep when the lid closes; keep it open or change the lid behavior if your device allows it.
- The stream stops despite a long sleep timeout: Confirm whether the setting applies to the current power condition—plugged in or on battery—and check that the encoder is still running and connected.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Verify the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the encoder is sending, and check Live Control Room for stream health before starting the event.
- The stream still drops unexpectedly: Keeping the computer awake cannot prevent power, network, encoder, or YouTube-side failures. Monitor the event rather than treating sleep settings as an uptime guarantee.
