OBS documents looping and shuffle for one source playlist; it does not document automatic alternation between two separately maintained named playlists.
Build one combined playlist in OBS
This method sends one audio-video output from OBS to one YouTube broadcast. The two podcast collections become a single queue, with the cross-show order set by you.
- Prepare the episode files. Use local files you have the rights to stream. Decide the order before adding them. For an alternating rotation, use a sequence such as A1, B1, A2, B2, then continue through both collections.
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC installed on the computer. OBS lists the source for Windows, macOS, and Linux; if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene you intend to broadcast, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the episode files in your chosen order. Confirm the source appears in the scene and that its audio is routed to the stream mix.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist so the queue starts again after its last file. Keep Shuffle Playlist disabled to preserve your planned A/B sequence. Shuffle randomizes the files rather than maintaining the order.
- Check the rotation before going live. Preview the playlist in OBS and confirm the files appear in the intended order, the video is visible, and audio reaches the stream mix. If you add, remove, or reorder files, check the queue again before starting the broadcast.
OBS documents playlist looping and shuffle behavior in its Media Sources guide. The documented approach is a combined queue, not two independently maintained playlists with an automatic alternation rule.
Schedule and start the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, and schedule a stream. Scheduling creates a watch page that viewers can share and lets them set reminders.
- Copy the scheduled broadcast’s YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check it, and then select Go live in YouTube Studio.
YouTube’s encoder help page describes scheduling, connecting an encoder, previewing, and going live. The scheduled broadcast is the event viewers watch; the encoder sends the media using its stream URL and key. Check rights before streaming podcast episodes
Publication on YouTube—or availability in a playlist—does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast an episode. Confirm that you have streaming rights for every audio and video file in the queue.
YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the content remains, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a live stream. If you have a license for third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Plan around the archive limit
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the replay matters, keep the broadcast under that duration; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. See YouTube’s encoder help.
Common problems and fixes
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu again.
- The episodes play in an unexpected order: Review the one combined queue and put each episode in its intended position. Disable Shuffle Playlist for a fixed A/B rotation.
- The playlist stops after the last episode: Enable Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- The preview has no audio: Check that the VLC source’s audio is routed to the OBS stream mix, then verify the preview in Live Control Room before going live.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the scheduled broadcast you selected, and that OBS has started streaming. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
- The stream is replaced or interrupted: A third-party-content match or a policy strike can trigger enforcement. Check rights for every file; if licensed content is matched, ask the rights owner about allowlisting your channel.
