OBS’s automatic reconnect helps with some interruptions, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service: the VPS, network route, Windows session, audio source, and streaming platform all need to work together.
What to check before setting up the stream
Choose the destination platform before renting or configuring a server. Check its current eligibility and account requirements, whether it permits a continuous stream of prerecorded content, its video and audio limits, stream-key handling, and any rules for looping or reused material. The sources cited here do not establish that a particular platform permits every 24/7 nature-sounds use case.
Confirm the VPS can sustain the workload
- Ask the provider whether the selected Windows image is supported and whether sustained outbound live streaming is allowed.
- Check traffic or bandwidth limits, reboot arrangements, and the graphics, audio, and encoding capabilities available on the specific plan.
- Measure sustained upload performance and the route to the destination’s ingest server. A VPS advertised as being in India is not, by that fact alone, proof of a stable route to a particular ingest point.
- Test how OBS and its audio source behave when you disconnect Remote Desktop, sign out, or reboot. Persistent audio behavior can depend on the actual Windows Server and provider setup; it is not established uniformly for all VPS plans.
The National Informatics Centre states a dedicated bandwidth guideline of 2–4 Mbps per stream for its webcast service. That is NIC guidance for its service, not a universal OBS minimum or a guarantee that a consumer platform, VPS, or route will work at that rate. NIC also describes 24×7 webcast service for certain government channels; those examples do not validate a third-party VPS for continuous streaming. Clear the rights to the nature audio
Use audio you created and control, or obtain a license that explicitly covers the planned public livestream and use on your chosen platform. Keep the license and any attribution requirements with the audio file. Calling a recording “nature sounds” does not establish that it is free to broadcast: a sound recording can involve rights holders, and Indian copyright materials recognize communication to the public and broadcast-related rights. The Copyright Office’s Copyright Act, 1957, Chapter I, Chapter VIII, and Hand Book of Copyright Law are useful starting points. Check current law and the license for the specific recording; this is not legal advice about an individual work.

Build a simple OBS scene
- Install OBS on the chosen Windows VPS only after confirming that its graphics and encoding capabilities suit your intended workflow. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements, while cautioning that minimum compatibility does not mean a system can stream. Check the current OBS System Requirements and verify the actual VPS plan.
- Open OBS and use its Quick Start process to configure the app for the available hardware and network. Add a static or looping visual source and the intended audio source. The OBS Quick Start Guide covers configuration, sources, audio meters, and testing.
- Watch the audio meter while the recording plays. If it is inactive, explicitly select the intended source or device. Listen to a test output if available and make sure the audio is audible without clipping.
- Check that the visual source behaves as intended over time. A static image may be sufficient for an ambience stream, but confirm it does not disappear or unexpectedly freeze in your actual scene.
Configure the destination, bitrate, and stream key
- In OBS, select the destination’s service if it is listed, or use the custom server details supplied by that platform. OBS supports a streaming service or custom server and a stream key; see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Copy the current server and stream-key details from the destination’s official live-streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in screenshots, public notes, or logs you share. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the platform’s controls.
- Set the video and audio output within the platform’s current limits. Choose a bitrate the VPS can sustain to the chosen ingest point. A static visual and sound-led program may not need a high video rate, but the right values depend on platform limits, codec settings, and measured network stability; there is no universal bitrate for every 24/7 stream.
- OBS’s connection-troubleshooting guidance discusses 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when lowering bitrate. Treat that only as a diagnostic starting point, not as a platform-wide rule or substitute for measuring stable throughput to the ingest server. OBS explains that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, and suggests lowering bitrate or trying a different server or service as troubleshooting steps. - Use the destination’s current requirements for resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframe interval rather than guessing. Confirm the stream key is associated with the intended live event or channel before publishing.
Test before relying on a continuous broadcast
Run a test stream for several minutes before announcing or relying on it. Confirm the picture appears at the destination, the audio is audible, the level is not clipping, and OBS is not reporting sustained dropped frames. Check the destination’s playback from a separate device or session where practical. OBS’s Quick Start guidance recommends testing settings before a first stream.
Then test the operational cases that matter for a 24/7 schedule: restart OBS, reboot the VPS, disconnect Remote Desktop, and observe whether the stream and audio return as intended. Keep an eye on OBS logs and the destination’s live status. A successful short test reduces uncertainty but does not prove that a server or platform will remain available continuously.

Arrange Windows startup and stream recovery
Start OBS automatically
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch argument. For automated Windows launches, its instructions say the working directory should point to the folder containing obs64.exe. See OBS Launch Parameters. Configure Windows startup or scheduling for the server you actually use, and make sure the task runs in the user and session context where OBS and the audio source are available.
Do not assume that launching OBS at boot also restores every part of the broadcast. Verify the scene, audio source, credentials, network connection, and stream state after a real reboot. The cited OBS instructions do not establish a universal Windows Server setting that preserves audio across remote-session disconnection.

Use reconnect as one layer, not the whole recovery plan
Enable OBS automatic reconnect in its stream settings. It can help when a connection interruption is recoverable, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every OBS crash, Windows failure, VPS outage, network fault, platform interruption, or broken source. Plan how you will detect a dead stream, recover after a reboot, protect or renew a compromised stream key, and alert an operator.
If you add a watchdog or scheduled relaunch, ensure it does not start duplicate OBS instances or repeatedly publish a broken feed. No particular monitoring product or recovery script is established here, so choose and validate a method against your VPS and destination rather than treating an untested automation as a guarantee.

Diagnose common failures

Cost and operational trade-offs
A VPS approach gives you control over the Windows environment and OBS workflow, but the total cost is more than the server rental: account for the Windows plan, sustained traffic terms, any monitoring or recovery arrangements, and the time needed to test and maintain the setup. Compare VPS options by India-region availability, measured route to the target ingest, sustained outbound policy, CPU and graphics/encoder resources, permission for continuous streaming, reboot support, and total cost. No host or plan is ranked here because no provider-specific verification is established.
