How to Play Podcast MP4 Files in a Continuous YouTube Live Stream with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop one podcast MP4 in a YouTube Live stream, add it to OBS as a Media Source and enable Loop. For a rotation of several MP4s, use OBS’s VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube Studio with the stream URL and key, test the picture and audio, and monitor the stream: a loop repeats playback, but does not guarantee unattended 24/7 operation.

Choose the OBS source that fits your podcast videos

Playback need OBS source Repeat setting Requirement or caveat
Repeat one local MP4 Media Source Loop OBS documents MP4 support and looping.
Cycle through multiple files VLC Video Loop Playlist VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS does not promise gapless transitions.

These source capabilities and requirements are documented by the OBS Project’s media sources guide. Check the current OBS interface and documentation if a label differs in your version.

Set up a single MP4 to repeat

  1. Add the source: In OBS, select the scene for the live show, then in the Sources dock click + and choose Media Source.
  2. Select the file: In the source properties, enable Local File if needed, browse to the podcast MP4, and select it.
  3. Enable looping: Turn on Loop so playback starts again when the file reaches its end.
  4. Check scene behavior: Review options such as Restart playback when source becomes active, Show nothing when playback ends, and Visibility Behaviour. Their effect matters if you switch scenes or hide and show the source; verify the result in a test recording rather than assuming defaults suit your scene setup.
  5. Check the result: Record a short test and confirm the MP4 plays, reaches its end, restarts, and includes its audio.

Set up a playlist of MP4 files

  1. Install VLC first: OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the source: In the scene’s Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. If the option is missing, check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
  3. Build the playlist: In the source properties, add the podcast MP4 files in the intended playback order.
  4. Loop the playlist: Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents this setting as on by default, but check it explicitly.
  5. Test the handoffs: Record through at least one file boundary and the playlist restart. Check for pauses, missing audio, or unexpected scene behavior; gapless playback is not guaranteed.

Make the scene show the right picture and sound

Add cover art, a title card, or other visual source if the video needs one. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear over sources below them, so arrange the list to put overlays above the video where appropriate. Check that the podcast audio appears in the Audio Mixer and that its meter moves during playback. A moving meter confirms OBS is receiving audio; listen to the recording or preview as well to confirm it sounds right.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. In OBS’s streaming settings, either select an available YouTube service integration or enter the server URL and stream key manually, depending on the setup offered by your OBS version.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It authorizes an encoder to send video to your YouTube stream; if it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  5. Start with a test stream or an unlisted/private stream where appropriate. Check the Live Control Room preview before making the broadcast public.

YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance covers using the server URL and stream key. Exact OBS service labels can vary with the integration and software version.

Choose encoder settings YouTube can use

YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Select recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use, rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.

Example output YouTube-listed bitrate How to interpret it
H.264 at 1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended This is YouTube’s figure for this specific codec, resolution, and frame rate, not a universal setting for podcast streams.

YouTube says it detects stream settings and transcodes live feeds for viewers at different formats. Choose an output your computer and network can sustain, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health during a test.

Test the full stream and monitor it while live

  • Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the expected video before publishing.
  • Listen for the embedded podcast audio and check that it is present throughout playback.
  • For a playlist, watch at least one transition and the return to the beginning.
  • Check OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and broadcast.
  • If recording a local backup, confirm the archive file is growing and has enough storage space.

OBS’s streaming guide recommends testing output settings before a first stream. If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or limit demanding sources, then test again. There is no single setting that fits every computer and connection.

Plan for long broadcasts and archive limits

YouTube Help’s live stream archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends making a local recording as a backup. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is not a guarantee that every shorter broadcast will archive successfully. YouTube’s DVR guidance also notes that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a replayable archive matters, plan a local recording and decide how you will end and restart the live stream.

A looping source only repeats media while OBS and its host are running and the stream remains connected. OBS and YouTube’s documented loop and encoder settings do not establish automatic recovery after a computer crash, network outage, or other failure. Continuous operation requires testing and monitoring appropriate to your reliability needs.

Clear podcast rights before rebroadcasting

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a broadcast. YouTube says even licensed third-party content can be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission for the podcast recording and every embedded song, clip, image, and other element to be rebroadcast live on YouTube. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
