Enable looping only if you want the playlist to start again after the final episode. If each episode needs a different title card or layout, you’ll also need a separate scene-switching setup; a playlist by itself changes the media, not the scene.
Choose what should switch automatically
- Only the episode: Use one VLC playlist source when the same picture and layout can remain on screen as files advance.
- The episode and its graphics: Prepare separate OBS scenes or sources for the different layouts. The playlist and the scene change are separate tasks.
- Repeat the sequence: Turn on playlist looping. Leave it off if the stream should stop advancing after the last file.
- Start at a scheduled time: Schedule the YouTube live event separately from preparing the episode sequence. Scheduling does not create or control the playlist.
Set up an episode playlist in OBS
- Prepare the files. Keep local copies of the episodes you plan to use. Decide their order and whether the sequence should play once, repeat, or shuffle. For a planned series, use an ordered sequence rather than shuffle.
- Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match the architecture: OBS’s documentation notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the episodes, add a VLC Video source, and add the episode files to its playlist in the intended order.
- Set playback behavior. Use the source’s loop control if the sequence should repeat; use shuffle only if episode order does not matter. Review the source’s visibility and playback behavior in the scene where it will run.
- Check the picture and sound. Preview the files in order, including the transitions between episodes and the end of the final file. Confirm that the source appears as intended and that audio is audible in the OBS mixer.

Add episode-specific scenes or graphics
A single playlist is usually the simpler arrangement when only the recorded audio and video need to advance. If each episode needs a guest card, title, or distinct layout, build the corresponding scenes or sources in OBS and configure a scene change that responds to the end of a file, if your chosen automation method supports that trigger.
OBS documents scenes and transitions as production building blocks, but the official material cited here does not give a complete, version-specific recipe for automatically switching scenes at each file’s end. Check that the method you choose supports the trigger in your installed version, then test it with the actual playlist. See OBS’s Sources Guide and developer documentation on frontends.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a live stream or schedule one. Choose private or unlisted visibility for a rehearsal if appropriate.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube into OBS’s stream settings.
- Start streaming from OBS. Follow the Live Control Room workflow to confirm or start the event as required for the stream you created.
- Before a public broadcast, preview the full sequence: episode order, audio continuity, scene changes, the last file’s ending, and the intended behavior after it ends.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating or scheduling an event and entering the stream URL and key in an encoder. Scheduling the event and building the episode sequence remain separate steps.
Keep episode playlists distinct from YouTube’s HLS playlist
OBS’s VLC playlist is your list of podcast episodes. YouTube’s HLS playlist is a transport structure used to deliver video segments to YouTube; it does not select the next episode. YouTube’s HLS setup requirements specify 1–4 second segments, Transport Stream format, HTTPS transfer, and no more than five outstanding segments. Those are ingestion requirements, not episode-switching controls.

What to know about using this workflow in India
The YouTube and OBS documentation cited here describes a general workflow and does not establish India-specific account eligibility, network reliability, latency, or feature availability. It does not identify an India-only restriction either, so use the documented setup without assuming details about local availability that these sources do not confirm.
Troubleshoot common switching problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Episodes play in the wrong order: Review the playlist order in the VLC Video source and disable shuffle if the sequence matters.
- The playlist stops after the final file: Enable looping if the sequence should repeat. If it should play only once, stopping at the end is expected.
- The video advances but the graphics do not: The playlist changes media, not the OBS scene. Set up separate scenes or sources and a supported scene automation method for episode-specific layouts.
- The scheduled event is waiting for video: Scheduling does not produce the show. Confirm OBS is connected with the stream URL and key, and start the encoder output through the selected YouTube workflow.
- The HLS settings seem unrelated to episode order: They are transport requirements for sending segments to YouTube, not controls for the OBS episode playlist.
