There is no single cause you can identify from the symptom alone. First compare the program output in OBS with the preview in YouTube Live Control Room: if OBS already shows the wrong episode, check the active scene, source visibility and order, and the file or playlist being played. If OBS shows the right episode but YouTube does not, inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicator and timestamped error messages to investigate delivery or configuration.
Find where the episode first goes wrong
Compare OBS’s program output—not just an individual source preview—with the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. This is a practical way to separate a source or playback problem inside OBS from a problem that appears after the stream is sent to YouTube. YouTube’s health tools report received-stream and encoding issues; they do not identify which episode you meant to play.
- Wrong in OBS and YouTube: start with OBS’s active scene, visible sources, source layering, and media or playlist selection.
- Right in OBS, wrong in YouTube: check the YouTube event and its stream-health messages, then verify stream configuration.
- Only the audio, title, thumbnail, or replay seems wrong: note that separately. A video-source check may not explain a mismatch in audio or event metadata.
OBS’s official Sources Guide describes scenes and sources as the components that determine what appears in OBS output. The distinction between OBS’s composition and YouTube’s received-stream diagnostics is a troubleshooting inference from the two products’ documentation, not a dedicated wrong-episode procedure.
If OBS itself shows the wrong episode
Confirm the active scene and source order
- In OBS, confirm the scene currently being sent to the stream is the scene you expect.
- In that scene’s Sources list, check that the intended media or capture source is visible; use its eye control to show or hide it.
- Check the order of overlapping sources. A source higher in the list can appear above and cover a lower source, so the intended episode may be playing but obscured by another video source.
These controls are covered in the official OBS Sources Guide. Its interface details date from January 11, 2022; labels or behavior may differ in newer OBS releases.

If the episode is a local Media Source
Open the Media Source’s properties and verify the selected file. Then review the playback options relevant to how that source is used:
- Restart playback when source becomes active: OBS documents this as on by default. When enabled, activating the source restarts playback, which can make it appear to return to an earlier episode or beginning.
- Loop: OBS documents this as off by default. Confirm whether the intended behavior is to stop after one play or repeat the file.
- Close file when inactive: if enabled, a hidden or inactive source may unload; showing it again can require a short reload period.
Check the actual file path and filename rather than relying on a source label: a source can retain a familiar name even if its selected file is not the episode you expect. OBS’s Media Sources documentation (January 11, 2022) describes these controls; verify the labels in your installed version.

If episodes are queued in a VLC playlist
Open the VLC Video source properties and inspect the playlist itself, including its file order. Make sure the intended episode is present and in the expected position, then check shuffle and loop settings. OBS documents shuffle as off by default and playlist looping as on by default. A shuffled queue can play a different episode than expected; looping can cause the sequence to start again.
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documents that 64-bit VLC is required. See the official Media Sources documentation for the source controls.

If OBS is capturing a browser, window, or display
In that case OBS may be showing whatever page, window, or screen is currently captured rather than selecting an episode file itself. Verify the captured browser tab or window and the episode playing in it. Also check source visibility and layering so another source is not covering the capture. The supplied OBS documentation does not establish a more specific cause for a wrong episode in these capture types.
If OBS is right but YouTube is wrong
Open the correct live event in YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator. YouTube says timestamped errors appear next to that indicator. Use the message and timestamp to see whether an ingestion or configuration problem coincides with the mismatch.

YouTube’s documented diagnostics cover issues such as format, codec, bitrate, audio sample rate and channel count, video settings, and keyframes. These can help diagnose what YouTube is receiving, but they do not reveal the intended episode or prove that YouTube selected a different local file. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
If you use the Live Streaming API, its health status provides additional configuration details, including missing or multiple audio/video streams, codecs, bitrates, frame rate, and keyframe frequency. It is useful for diagnosing stream configuration—not content selection. Google marks the API health-status documentation as updated September 14, 2026: Live Streaming API health status.

Make the next diagnosis specific
If the mismatch remains, record these details before changing several settings at once. They make it easier to distinguish a source-selection issue from an audio, event, or delivery issue:
- OBS version and operating system.
- Source type: Media Source, VLC playlist, browser capture, window capture, or display capture.
- The active scene and whether the wrong content appears in OBS’s program output, YouTube’s preview, or both.
- Whether the mismatch affects video, audio, title or thumbnail, or the eventual replay.
- Any timestamped YouTube health message and when it appeared.
An OBS issue report opened November 30, 2022, described intermittent differences between audio mixer, monitoring, recording, and live output while switching scenes on OBS 28.1.2 in Windows 10. It is an individual report, not evidence that a current general OBS defect causes wrong podcast episodes. See OBS issue #7879.
