How to Display Episode Titles During a Continuous Podcast Stream on YouTube

Use one stable title for the continuous YouTube live video, then show each episode’s name inside the video as an on-screen title card or lower third. Editing YouTube’s live title changes the broadcast’s metadata; it does not create an automatic episode-by-episode title display.

Why one continuous stream has one YouTube title

YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream (the feed) from the broadcast (the viewer-facing live event). The Live Streaming API documentation states: “The broadcast represents exactly one YouTube video.” Its title and description therefore describe that continuous video, even if the program moves through several podcast episodes. YouTube LiveBroadcasts API

The stream resource also has a separate title field, but that is not a changing episode-title track shown to viewers. The API reference’s 1-to-128-character limit applies to the stream resource’s title, not necessarily to the broadcast/video title. YouTube LiveStreams API

How to display each episode title

  1. Choose a title for the whole continuous show. Use the podcast name and wording such as “Live” or “Continuous Episodes.” Avoid making one episode’s name the permanent title if other episodes will follow.
  2. Prepare graphics in your production system. Add a title card at the beginning of each episode. A lower third can repeat the episode name later, such as after a break. This is a production workflow, not a native YouTube episode-title feature.
  3. Put the graphic into the outgoing program video. Add it through the encoder or production setup used to create the feed. The title must be part of the video viewers receive; changing YouTube metadata alone will not make the episode name appear over the picture.
  4. Check legibility and timing. Preview the title at a typical mobile viewing size, confirm it is visible in the outgoing program, and make sure each graphic appears with the corresponding episode.
  5. Use the broadcast title only for meaningful changes to the overall listing. YouTube Help says live-stream metadata can be chosen or edited in stream settings, including while scheduling. The API also supports updating a broadcast’s title and description. Those edits still change metadata for the continuous live video; they do not substitute for an in-video slate. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings YouTube Live Streaming API: Life of a Broadcast YouTube LiveBroadcasts: update
  6. Help viewers orient themselves in the description. Consider listing episode names and timestamps there. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a stream when enabled; check the controls available for your stream in YouTube Studio. Do not assume the timestamp list creates native live chapters.

Title metadata or an on-screen episode graphic?

Approach What viewers see Best use Trade-off
Broadcast title in YouTube The title associated with the continuous live video in YouTube’s interface Describing the overall show and helping viewers identify the stream An edit changes metadata for the one broadcast; it does not place an episode name over the video
Title card or lower third in the program The episode name within the actual video output Identifying the current episode, including for viewers who arrive midstream Requires the graphic to be prepared and included in the production workflow
Episode names and timestamps in the description Written orientation alongside the live video Helping viewers find episode names and points in the continuous program Does not replace a visible on-screen title; do not promise native live chapters on this basis

Stream and broadcast titles are different fields

In YouTube’s API model, the stream is the transmitted feed and the broadcast is the viewer-facing event that uses it. Broadcast title updates apply to the broadcast/video; a stream resource has its own separate title field. For a producer operating through YouTube Studio rather than the API, the practical distinction is the same: the live video’s title is not a mechanism for displaying a sequence of episode names inside the program.
