TRY! follows four Irish players with and without disabilities as they play full-contact, 15-a-side mixed ability rugby and prepare for the 2025 World Cup in Spain. The documentary’s question reaches beyond sport: if people can make a team together on a demanding rugby pitch, why do assumptions still keep them apart in classrooms, workplaces and social groups?
What is TRY! about?
Directed by Oisin Misteil, TRY! centres on four players from Irish mixed ability rugby clubs: Maeve Owens of the Ballincollig Trailblazers, Richie Philpott of the Sunday’s Well Rebels, Paul Deacon of the DLSP Vikings and Tommy Crawford of the Malone Tornadoes. It follows their journey toward the 2025 World Cup in Spain. The Irish Examiner’s 2 October 2026 feature on the film reports that it opened in cinemas that day and had previously won best documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh.
Mixed ability rugby, as portrayed in the film, is a 15-a-side, full-contact game in which players with and without disabilities take part together. The film uses that shared physical challenge as a way to examine inclusion—not as a claim that sport automatically resolves the barriers people encounter elsewhere.
Who are the players the film follows?
The documentary gives its central figures room to appear as teammates and individuals, rather than treating disability as their defining characteristic. The Examiner feature describes Maeve studying matches on YouTube and practicing passes in the garden; Richie bringing a speaker to matches; and Tommy’s backyard pub, the Monkey Claw Tavern. It also notes that Paul’s sister Jeamie played rugby for Ireland, and that Tommy is willing to talk about men’s mental health.

Those details matter to the film’s portrait of club life: the friendships, jokes, habits and shared commitments that make a team a social home as well as a sporting one. The feature emphasizes camaraderie and humor alongside the players’ rugby.
What barriers does TRY! challenge?
Misteil told the Irish Examiner: “We have subconsciously created a lot of barriers for people with disabilities where there don’t need to be barriers.” He frames the film around a practical challenge to those assumptions: “If mixed ability works somewhere as cutthroat and aggressive and violent and challenging as a rugby pitch, why doesn’t it work, or why won’t it work, in your workplace or in your classroom or in your social group?”

The question is not that a rugby club and a workplace are identical. Rather, the team offers a visible example of people with different abilities taking part together, while prompting viewers to ask which limits are necessary and which are imposed by expectation.
How does the film handle humor and belonging?
The film’s emphasis on laughter is part of its refusal to reduce its subjects to symbols. Misteil told the Examiner: “There’s a sense sometimes that you can’t laugh with someone who has a disability,” and, “People who have disabilities are funny just like anybody else is.” The point is not to make disability itself a punchline, but to recognize humor as part of ordinary relationships and shared team life.

Paul Deacon describes the support he values in his team this way: “The thing I like about my team, they do not back off,” followed by, “They do not tell each other, ‘you’re not worth it’. You are worth it.” The documentary’s account of belonging is grounded in those relationships rather than in an uncomplicated triumph narrative.
What does Maeve Owens’s family recount?
The Examiner feature recounts Maeve’s parents’ account of a frightening episode from the early 1990s: when Maeve needed lifesaving heart surgery at four months old, a medical professional questioned whether to proceed because she had Down syndrome. Her father, Ted, is quoted in the report. This is the family’s account of a specific event; it should not be generalized into a claim about current medical practice.
