The State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt (LDA) estimates the pieces are up to about 10,500 years old and associates them with Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. A roughly 1.6-meter-high post bears marks from felling and working, but researchers have not determined whether the wood came from dwellings or another kind of construction.
What was found beneath Lake Arendsee?
The LDA reports a large worked post and additional wooden pieces found along a former shoreline. The post is about 1.6 meters high and has traces of felling and working. The finds were recovered during underwater archaeological work in 2026: the initial discovery came in spring, followed by the recovery of additional samples and individual pieces.
These are fragments and worked timbers, not an intact, identified house. The LDA says researchers are investigating whether they belonged to dwellings or to a previously unknown kind of wooden construction. The site’s extent and the wood’s age still need further study.
How old is the Mesolithic wood?
The LDA describes the material as up to about 10,500 years old and attributes it to Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. That is an approximate estimate, not a more precise calendar date or a settled radiocarbon result in the announcement. The LDA says further work is intended to establish the site’s age.

The lake has yielded other evidence of early human activity, but it should not be confused with the new timber. In a 2011 account, the LDA described a worked pine splinter from lake sediments dated to approximately 8200–8000 BC, which it then identified as the oldest evidence of human activity at Arendsee. The splinter is a separate find, not an identification of the 2026 wood’s species or date. LDA: October 2011 find of the month
Was it a Mesolithic house?
That has not been established. The LDA has left open whether the pieces came from dwellings or another form of wooden construction; no confirmed house, settlement, permanent village, or farming landscape has been reported.

The distinction matters because the discovery could inform a larger question about how Mesolithic communities used the landscape. The LDA notes that transformation of natural environments into cultural landscapes is generally associated with the first farmers, who reached Central Germany around 5500 BC. If the Arendsee wood proves to be part of structures or intensively used living spaces, it could broaden understanding of earlier hunter-gatherer lifeways. That possibility is a research question, not a conclusion from the finds so far.
Why was the wood preserved underwater?
The pieces lie beneath a thin layer of sediment at roughly 20 meters below the lake surface, along an earlier shoreline. The LDA links their location and preservation to gradual subsidence of the lakebed associated with an underlying salt dome. It contrasts this process with the gradual silting-up typical of many inland waters: at Arendsee, the earlier shoreline and its archaeological traces sank and became covered by sediment.

How are archaeologists mapping the site?
Following the spring discovery, researchers recovered more samples and individual finds. In a second campaign with Fraunhofer IOSB-AST, they used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to collect high-resolution sonar scans of the former shoreline’s relief. Precise positioning of the finds can help narrow areas of interest and plan further underwater investigation.
The LDA has worked archaeologically underwater at Arendsee for several years. The lake also contains evidence from other periods, including Neolithic fish weirs, a high-medieval barge, and a late-medieval dugout canoe. One separate wooden fish weir was traced for 150 meters and dated by carbon-14 analysis to about 4,600 years ago, according to the LDA’s 2020 account. What happens next?
Further investigation is intended to clarify the site’s extent and refine the age of the wood. The announcement does not provide a narrower date, identify the timber species, or settle what the pieces formed. Until those questions are answered, the strongest conclusion is that worked wood associated with Mesolithic hunter-gatherers has been recovered from a submerged former shoreline—not that archaeologists have found a confirmed house.
The LDA has also connected the discovery’s period with the Bad Dürrenberg shaman. Its release says the State Museum of Prehistory Halle exhibition “The Shaman” is scheduled to remain on view through 7 February 2027; visitors should check the museum for current exhibition dates.
