Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor Deep Space Nine and Voyager-era footage, the first decision is not whether to upscale 4Ă—: it is whether the source is progressive or interlaced. Choose a model for that source type, then compare short previews from different kinds of shots before committing to a full render. A larger output can look cleaner while losing fine texture, and the right settings can vary from one scene to the next.
This is a reproducible workflow for evaluating Topaz Video AI (also referred to in older material as Video Enhance AI), not a claim that one preset restores every episode. Topaz’s own enhancement guidance says that footage is unique and encourages experimentation with models and parameters. The software controls described here are documented capabilities; the fan projects cited below are examples of community workflows, not Paramount remasters or proof of a universally best setting.
Start by identifying the source, not choosing a resolution
Before opening the enhancement controls, preserve the best available copy of the source. If it is still interlaced, do not destructively deinterlace it first: that can discard information or bake processing artifacts into the image before Topaz can handle it. In Topaz, classify the input as Progressive, Interlaced or Interlaced Progressive according to the source. These labels describe the video’s scan and field structure; they are not interchangeable quality settings.
When you know the source’s field order, record it with the input dimensions. Do not guess field order to make a preview look better: a wrong interpretation can create motion judder or combing. If the source is already progressive, do not route it through a deinterlacing model just because it is old or low-resolution.

Which Dione model should you test?
Topaz describes Dione as a family that combines deinterlacing and upscaling for interlaced footage. Its filters guidance positions Dione TV for analog television, camcorder, DVD and SD material, and Dione DV for DV, DVCPRO, 720i and 1080i material. Those descriptions provide a sensible first test, not a guarantee that a model will suit every transfer or scene.
| Input to evaluate | Documented starting point | What to verify in a preview |
|---|---|---|
| Interlaced analog TV, camcorder, DVD or SD footage | Dione TV | Motion handling, edge detail, combing, and whether the result looks unnaturally smooth |
| Interlaced DV, DVCPRO, 720i or 1080i footage | Dione DV | Field interpretation, motion continuity, and fine texture |
| Progressive footage | Do not select a deinterlacing path solely because the material is old; compare suitable enhancement options for that clip | Whether detail is preserved without adding softness, halos or unstable texture |
The table reflects Topaz’s stated model targets. It does not establish that every DVD transfer is interlaced, or that a model will identify a particular episode’s source correctly. Check the actual file and the preview.
Where are the controls, and have model names changed?
Topaz’s enhancement workflow exposes output resolution, model selection, recover detail, add noise, focus fix and options for a second enhancement pass. In versions that group these controls under an Enhancement section, start there. Exact panel names and model availability can change between software releases, so match the controls shown in your installed version rather than assuming an older guide’s screen layout or model list still applies.

The older name Topaz Video Enhance AI appears in community projects and older documentation; the product is also called Topaz Video or Topaz Video AI in the materials referenced here. A familiar model name or preset in an older guide is not evidence that the current interface has the identical label, settings, or behavior. Keep the software version and selected model name in your run notes.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Topaz documents presets for deinterlacing and upscaling to HD and for upscaling to 4K. The 4K preset targets 3840 Ă— 2160 and uses Proteus; the deinterlace preset uses a Dione model. Treat either preset as a starting point, not a verdict on your source. A preset cannot know whether a particular shot is a close-up, a dark scene, an optical effect or a credit roll.

- Dialogue close-ups: inspect faces, hair and fine edges for waxy smoothing, invented texture or halos.
- Fast motion: watch moving edges and backgrounds for judder, ghosting or frame-to-frame instability.
- Dark scenes: check whether noise reduction erases shadow texture or leaves distracting noise.
- Optical effects: compare glows, composites and soft transitions, which may not behave like ordinary live-action shots.
- Credits and fine lines: look for ringing, broken letter edges and flicker.
Use the same source frames and output dimensions when comparing alternatives. Review the preview at its intended playback size as well as enlarged: a crop can reveal processing artifacts, but an enlarged crop alone can make harmless differences seem decisive.
Change one control at a time
First compare model choices appropriate to the source classification. Then adjust the available detail, noise and focus controls in separate tests. Recover detail can change how much fine structure the model tries to retain or restore; add noise can affect whether a result looks unnaturally smooth; and focus fix can alter apparent sharpness. Their presence does not mean more is better. A setting that improves one close-up can damage grain, edges or another scene.
Test a second enhancement pass only as a separate branch from the best first-pass result. Record whether that pass improves a particular defect or instead compounds softness, sharpening artifacts or instability. Do not overwrite your source or the best first-pass render while experimenting.

Can a 4Ă— upscale lose detail?
Yes. Four times the width and height produces a much larger pixel grid; it does not recover four times as much source information. An AI model can produce plausible-looking detail, but the result may smooth away grain or small textures, exaggerate edges, or create details that were not clearly present in the input. If the apparent detail is unstable between frames, it may look worse in motion than in a still preview.
Compare a 4K output with an HD output from the same representative clips. Inspect faces, fabric, hair, shadow areas, credits and moving edges. Prefer the result that preserves coherent texture and motion for your intended viewing size—not automatically the largest file or the sharpest still frame.
Check frame rate when using Dione
Topaz’s noisy-footage guide identifies Dione as the interlaced path and notes that Dione deinterlacing doubles the frame rate unless the output frame rate is changed. Confirm the output frame-rate setting and inspect motion in the rendered file; do not infer the final cadence from resolution or model name alone. Record both input and output frame rates so a later comparison does not confuse a cadence change with an image-quality difference.

Keep a render log so comparisons mean something
A reproducible diary is useful only if each test can be distinguished from the next. For every preview and final render, record:
- Topaz software version and render date
- Source filename or episode and shot description
- Input dimensions and whether the input is progressive, interlaced or interlaced progressive
- Field order, if known
- Model name and preset, if used
- Output dimensions and frame rate
- Recover detail, add noise, focus fix and second-pass settings used
- Output codec and any other export settings you need to reproduce the file
Do not claim a measured speed or quality improvement unless you have logged a controlled comparison on your own hardware and source clips. Render time and hardware load can vary, and this workflow does not establish a universal performance figure.
What fan DS9 upscales do—and do not—demonstrate
A Reddit tutorial says its author began a Deep Space Nine upscale project in January 2020 using Topaz Video Enhance AI. The DS9:R workflow PDF documents VOB input and a Topaz VEAI Chronos Fast v2 step at 400%. These are evidence that fans have tried Topaz-based workflows with DS9-related material. They do not establish an official Paramount restoration, a studio-approved method, a best setting for all DS9 episodes, or a guaranteed result for Voyager. The Chronos Fast v2 step is an example from that documented fan workflow, not a general recommendation for choosing an upscaling model.
