What happens in the final scene?
After the central story concludes, Max, Lucas, Dustin, Will, and Mike finish a Dungeons & Dragons campaign in the Wheelers’ basement. The original group then leaves, and Mike shuts the door behind them. Holly and her friends begin a game of their own.
The Duffer Brothers describe the image as the original friends saying goodbye to childhood and passing the torch to a younger group. Ross Duffer said, “This is about this group of characters saying goodbye to their childhood,” and added, “It is their time to leave it behind and pass the torch to the next group of kids.” Both statements come from a Netflix Tudum interview published Jan. 2, 2026.

The final game also calls back to the first season, when the friends’ D&D campaign introduced the show’s central group and its imaginative language. The Duffers frame the ending as both a farewell to that childhood ritual and a handoff. That is the creators’ stated intention, rather than the only possible interpretation of the scene. Netflix Tudum’s post-finale interview discusses the closing image.
Does Eleven die?
The finale does not conclusively confirm that Eleven dies or survives. Netflix’s official ending explainer says she is shown at the MAC-Z gate as the Upside Down collapses. In the later D&D scene, Mike offers a hopeful account: Kali could have used an illusion to help Eleven escape. The friends choose to believe that possibility, but the story does not establish it as fact.

The creators deliberately leave the answer open. Matt Duffer connects Eleven’s choice to growing up and making decisions for herself; the ending invites viewers to weigh Mike’s hope without turning it into confirmation. The clearest answer is that her fate is ambiguous by design.
