What do I need to know before Moana 2?
The first film’s essential setup is that Moana restored the Heart of Te Fiti and took on the role of leader and wayfinder for Motunui. That background explains why wayfinding and her responsibilities to her people matter in the sequel; you do not need a full plot recap to follow the premise. The new story is set three years later. Disney’s synopsis says Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors and must journey to far seas and long-lost waters. The voyage reunites her with Maui and brings a wider group of seafarers into the story. Walt Disney Animation Studios also describes the sequel as taking place three years after the 2016 film.
Do I need to watch the first Moana before Moana 2?
No. The premise and the key piece of context are straightforward: Moana is a leader and wayfinder, and this time her voyage is tied to reconnecting people across the region. If you want more emotional context for her relationship with Maui or her connection to Motunui, watching the first film is a useful refresher, not a prerequisite.

Returning characters
Moana and Maui return, joined by Heihei and Pua. Moana’s younger sister, Simea, is also part of the sequel’s family story, according to Disney’s official film page.
The new canoe crew
Moana’s voyage includes three unlikely seafarers with distinct roles: Loto, an engineer; Kele, a farmer; and Moni, a historian and storyteller. The Associated Press’s 2024 preview identifies their occupations and reports that the project was initially developed as a streaming series before becoming a theatrical feature.

Who made the film and its music?
David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller directed Moana 2. Christina Chen and Yvett Merino produced it, and Jared Bush co-wrote the screenplay with Miller, according to Disney and a November 26, 2024 Disney interview.
The sequel’s credited music team is Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa‘i, and Mark Mancina. That is the film’s credited team; it should not be reduced to the assumption that the first movie’s songwriting credits simply carry over unchanged. Disney’s director interview also discusses the filmmakers’ work with the Oceanic Cultural Trust during production. That describes the studio’s stated process, not a guarantee that every viewer will judge the film’s cultural representation in the same way.

How long is Moana 2, and when did it come out?
Disney lists the runtime as 1 hour 40 minutes and the theatrical opening date as November 27, 2024. Those are release facts, not a statement about current local showtimes or availability. Disney announced that the film began streaming on Disney+ on March 12, 2025; that historical debut does not establish whether it is currently available in every country’s catalog.
