The seven young actors at the center of The Goonies went in different directions after the 1985 adventure film. Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton continued acting; Jeff Cohen became an entertainment lawyer; and Kerri Green pursued selective acting and filmmaking. Their connection has resurfaced at cast gatherings, but late-2025 reporting on a sequel did not confirm any original cast members or a release date.
What happened to the seven young Goonies?
These are career paths, not a claim that every performer is currently attached to a project. Biography.com’s 2020 cast retrospective and Fathom’s retrospective cover much of the post-film history; the more recent updates below are dated to the reporting that established them.

Sean Astin (Mikey Walsh)
Astin continued acting after playing Mikey, with prominent later roles in Rudy and The Lord of the Rings. Biography.com’s 2020 retrospective and Fathom’s cast feature trace that screen career. Fathom also mentioned a planned Broadway debut at the time it published; that is a historical plan, not evidence here of his current stage work.
Josh Brolin (Brand Walsh)
Brolin’s early career was uneven, but he went on to become a prominent film actor. His later credits include No Country for Old Men, Milk, playing Thanos in Marvel films, and Dune. These are career landmarks rather than a list of current projects, as described in the 2020 Biography.com and Fathom retrospectives.

- The Goonies (4K)
Jeff Cohen (Chunk)
Cohen left acting and became an entertainment lawyer after law school. His legal work later intersected with a former castmate’s acting career: the Associated Press reported in March 2023 that Cohen represented Ke Huy Quan in contract negotiations for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Corey Feldman (Mouth)
Feldman continued working in film and television and also pursued music and documentary work, according to the Biography.com and Fathom retrospectives. In April 2025, he said the original cast’s participation in a sequel had not been decided. That statement addressed casting at that point, not the film’s eventual outcome.
Rank #2
Ke Huy Quan (Data)
After years away from prominent on-screen acting roles and work behind the camera, Quan returned to major screen visibility with Everything Everywhere All at Once. He won the supporting-actor Oscar in 2023. The Associated Press reported that his former co-stars congratulated him around the win and that Cohen had represented him in the film’s contract negotiations—a concrete example of the cast’s ties continuing beyond the set.
Kerri Green (Andy)
Green’s post-Goonies career included selective acting, co-founding Independent Women Artists and directing Bellyfruit. A 2020 profile described her as largely out of the public eye. That dated description does not establish that she retired or stopped working.
Rank #3
Martha Plimpton (Stef)
Plimpton continued working on stage and screen. Her later credits include the television series Raising Hope and The Good Wife; she has also advocated for reproductive rights. Biography.com and Fathom discuss these as career context, not as proof of a current project.
What happened to John Matuszak, who played Sloth?
Matuszak died in 1989. Biography.com attributed his death to a prescription drug overdose. He was an adult performer in the film rather than one of its seven young central cast members, but his role as Sloth remains an important part of the ensemble.
Rank #4
Did the Goonies cast reunite, and are the original actors in the sequel?
The cast’s 2025 reunion was connected to Quan’s hand-and-footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre. It offered a public glimpse of the former castmates together, but a reunion is not confirmation that they will appear in a new film.
The sequel’s status must be read by date and as three separate questions: whether a project is being developed, whether original actors are attached, and whether it has a release schedule.

- Development: In November 2025, GamesRadar reported that a sequel was in development and that its script was being revised.
- Original cast: The same report said no original cast member was then cast. In April 2025, Feldman had also said participation was undecided. GamesRadar reported Quan expressing interest in revisiting Data, which is not the same as a casting announcement.
- Release date: GamesRadar reported no release date in November 2025.
Those are dated reports, not guarantees about what may have changed since. Development alone does not confirm a returning cast or a scheduled release.
