Spoilers for the season 1 finale of IT: Welcome to Derry and IT: Chapter Two. The older woman in the 1988 Juniper Hill epilogue is Ingrid Kersh, played by Joan Gregson. She is a real person—not Pennywise in disguise in this scene—and she is the woman whose appearance IT later adopts as Mrs. Kersh in IT: Chapter Two. The coda also shows young Beverly Marsh at the hospital after her mother dies, establishing that Beverly and Ingrid crossed paths before the film’s events.
Who is the woman in the epilogue?
She is Ingrid Kersh, a Juniper Hill patient portrayed in the 1988 scene by Joan Gregson. After another patient, Elfrida Marsh, dies by suicide, a commotion brings young Beverly Marsh and her father into the hospital scene. Elfrida is Beverly’s mother, and the encounter places Beverly and Ingrid in the same place before the events of the films.
The distinction that makes the ending work is between the person and the later apparition: Ingrid is real in the epilogue. In IT: Chapter Two, the frightening Mrs. Kersh who confronts adult Beverly is IT using Ingrid’s form. The film encounter is not evidence that the 1988 hospital scene shows Pennywise impersonating her.
Why doesn’t Beverly remember Ingrid?
The epilogue implies an earlier meeting, not a memory Beverly consciously carries into IT: Chapter Two. Director Andy Muschietti told TVLine that Beverly does not remember because she was in shock when the encounter happened. The coda is therefore a continuity link for viewers; it does not show Beverly identifying Ingrid, discovering IT, or learning what Ingrid will mean later.

When does the epilogue take place?
Season one’s main story is set in 1962 and reaches its climax around the Black Spot events. The coda jumps forward to October 1988 at Juniper Hill, placing it shortly before the children’s story in the films. That time jump is why the closing scene feels like a bridge from the series to IT: Chapter Two rather than another beat in the 1962 finale.
How is this different from the Marge and Richie reveal?
The Ingrid scene is a separate 1988 coda. Earlier, during the 1962 climax, Pennywise tells Marge Truman that she will become Richie Tozier’s mother and tries to kill her to prevent Richie’s future role in IT’s defeat. The two moments connect the prequel to the films in different ways: the hospital scene links characters across the timeline, while the Marge reveal makes IT’s nonlinear experience of time part of the series’ explanation for its actions.

Andy Muschietti told TheWrap that brief, unresolved passages in Stephen King’s novel led the creative team to explore how IT might experience time. He described the show’s expanded premise this way: “We made it bigger to the point where the whole reason why we’re telling the story backwards – because a monster that doesn’t experience time linearly can live in time in a very different way, and at the same time, can rewrite history, right?” That is the adaptation’s creative rationale, not a definitive answer established by the novel.
What does the scene say about the show’s planned timeline?
The creators described a three-season blueprint moving backward from 1962: a season about the 1935 Bradley Gang massacre and another about the 1908 Easter egg hunt. Those interviews described a plan and a hope, not a renewal announcement. The backward chronology fits the show’s treatment of IT as a creature that does not experience time linearly, but the interviews do not confirm that those seasons will be made.
