Spoilers for “Chikhai Bardo.” Mark’s memories of his life with Gemma explain the intimacy and losses behind their marriage, while the episode’s testing-floor scenes reveal that Gemma is alive and being put through separate, room-specific experiences at Lumon. Her attempt to leave fails. Mark wakes after collapsing, but the episode does not confirm that he has completed reintegration or that he will reach Gemma.
What happens at the end of “Chikhai Bardo”?
Gemma tries to leave Lumon’s testing floor with an access pass. Milchick intercepts her at the exit and orders her back; she returns through the elevator and is led into the testing area again. It is an act of resistance, not an escape.
In the closing scene, Mark regains consciousness after his collapse. The moment may mark a turning point in his reintegration storyline, but waking alone does not prove that reintegration is complete. The episode does not show him rescuing Gemma or reuniting with her.
What do Mark and Gemma’s flashbacks reveal?
A relationship built before Lumon
The memories begin at a blood drive at Ganz College, where Mark and Gemma both teach. They trace their courtship, marriage and domestic life, then show the couple trying to have a child. Gemma suffers a miscarriage, and later IVF is unsuccessful. These events give emotional context to Mark’s grief and his decision to undergo severance; they do not, by themselves, establish why Lumon became interested in the couple.

Why the memories feel different
The flashbacks present a more open, intimate life than the controlled severed world. Director and director of photography Jessica Lee Gagné described the approach as “opening up the things that he would’ve closed himself off to.” The contrast makes the remembered marriage feel like a life Mark has lost, rather than just background information about his past. Gagné also said, “It was clear that this wasn’t going to be a happy ending.” That is her description of the episode’s development, not an explanation of Lumon’s technology.
Is Gemma dead, and what is Lumon doing to her?
The outside-world account is that Gemma died in a car crash. The episode reveals that she survived and is held by Lumon. On the testing floor, separate rooms correspond to distinct, room-specific versions of Gemma’s innie experience. Her outside self does not appear to retain ordinary memories of what those versions undergo, though pain can remain.

Dr. Mauer is involved in administering or overseeing the tests. The episode does not fully explain how Lumon creates or maintains these separate experiences, so the precise mechanics remain uncertain. Apple’s Inside the Episode feature describes the cast and creatives discussing how the episode was made, including the team’s work in developing Gemma’s character.
What does Cold Harbor have to do with Mark and Gemma?
Episode 7 links Mark’s Macrodata Refinement work to Gemma’s testing. Lumon staff discuss Cold Harbor and the progress of Mark’s work, while Gemma identifies Cold Harbor as the final room she has yet to enter. That makes Mark’s work materially relevant to her fate.

What the project is ultimately meant to do, why Lumon selected Mark and Gemma, and exactly how the room-specific experiences are produced are not explained here. Treat any more specific account of Cold Harbor’s purpose as speculation, not an answer the episode supplies.

Episode coverage describes “Chikhai Bardo” as a Buddhist concept associated with the moment of death. As a thematic reading, the title fits the episode’s thresholds: Mark moves between memory and waking, Gemma is divided between her outside self and innie experiences, and the flashbacks revisit a life that has effectively ended for Mark. This is symbolism, not a literal explanation of severance technology.
