Reinhard Reisenzahn’s Glitchman modifies a Sony Discman ESP2—specifically the D-E445—so its electronic skip-protection buffer can be redirected into the digital-to-analog converter as sound. Buttons and an external CV/gate input trigger the glitches, while the player retains ordinary CD playback. It is a model-specific hardware circuit-bending project, not a software effect or a general-purpose modification for every Discman.
How Glitchman makes sound from a CD player
Electronic Skip Protection (ESP) reads audio ahead of playback and stores it in RAM so the player can keep going through mechanical shocks. Reisenzahn’s circuit taps the RAM-controller, memory and DAC area, then lets controls send random or manipulated buffer data to the digital-to-analog converter. The DAC turns that data into sound.
That source gives the instrument its character: the glitches come from digital CD data and buffer contents, producing choppy artifacts and short snippets rather than the sounds associated with an analog malfunction. Reisenzahn described the goal as sending “random data stored in the buffer to the input of the DA converter at the touch of a button.” Some button-triggered sounds are repeatable; others depend on what is currently held in the ESP buffer.
Which Discman the documented build uses
Sony D-E445 with ESP
The documented Glitchman is built around the Sony Discman ESP2, model D-E445. ESP is essential to the approach because its RAM buffer supplies the data that can be redirected into the DAC. The project documentation does not establish that other ESP-equipped players will work with the same wiring.

Why another model is not automatically compatible
Portable CD players differ internally. The manual cautions that board circuitry varies between models, so the locations and connections that work on the D-E445 may not match another player. A donor should be assessed for ESP, buffer behavior, access to the RAM and DAC connections, power compatibility, physical room for added electronics, and condition—not chosen by brand name alone.
Controls and normal CD playback
Added push buttons call up sounds from the buffer, and optional potentiometers provide further control. A CV/gate input lets an external device, such as a modular synthesizer, trigger the effects. The modification is designed to preserve the Discman’s ordinary playback function; Reisenzahn reports that the completed unit still plays CDs.

There is a practical limit to how aggressively the controls can be used. Holding buttons or pressing several at once can overload the DAC: output may stop and the time display may freeze even while the disc continues turning. The manual says to press STOP and then PLAY to restore normal operation. Buffer contents can also outlast a disc change, allowing sounds from the previous disc to be recalled for several minutes.
What the build requires
The manual identifies contacts around IC601, the RAM controller; IC602, the DRAM; and IC301, the D/A converter, as places where connections can produce effects. This is hands-on work inside a specific player, so the board layout and signal path matter.

- Power: Reisenzahn powered the added circuit from a 9V battery. The Discman itself should use its recommended batteries or a 4.5V DC transformer; the manual describes the player as power-sensitive.
- Housing and wiring: an extension box below the compact player enclosure to hold the added circuit, wiring, a toggle switch and an indicator LED.
Important connection and recovery cautions
The build manual warns not to connect to VCC, because doing so can destroy the circuit. Connections to GND commonly stop playback, but PLAY can recover it. These cautions are specific to the documented modification and reinforce why the D-E445 wiring should not be assumed to transfer directly to another model.

Glitchman uses the player’s existing digital playback architecture as an expressive source rather than replacing it with a conventional synthesizer. Buttons offer direct access to repeatable or buffer-dependent sounds; CV/gate adds a way to trigger them from other equipment. As Reisenzahn put it, “The challenge lies in creating and evoking these glitches in a targeted manner.” The design’s unusual balance is that the same modified machine can still play a CD normally.
