Contemporary reports described the death as accidental and said autoerotic asphyxiation was a likely explanation, but the reporting available here does not include Thailand’s original final investigative file. The medical cause is clearer than the precise circumstances attributed to his death.
What was David Carradine’s cause of death?
Reports following Carradine’s death said he died of asphyxiation. Family-hired pathologist Michael Baden later identified asphyxiation as the cause, according to contemporaneous reporting. That answers the medical-cause question, but it does not by itself establish exactly how the asphyxiation occurred.
Was his death ruled an accident?
Contemporary accounts described Carradine’s death as accidental and reported autoerotic asphyxiation as a likely circumstance. That explanation should be attributed to the reporting, not presented as a conclusion directly verified here from an original final Thai investigative file.
Why did early reports mention suicide?
Initial police accounts shifted from suspicion of suicide toward accidental suffocation as more information emerged. Baden said the evidence available to him did not indicate suicide, while also cautioning that further information from Thailand—including scene, laboratory and toxicology findings—was needed for a final determination.

“The autopsy findings and the evidence thus far available demonstrate that Mr. Carradine’s death was not the result of suicide.”
Baden’s statement was qualified: it described the evidence then available to him, not a final determination based on all Thai investigative material. Later reports quote him naming asphyxiation as the cause of death.
