Damsel filmed its outdoor scenery in Portugal, while most of its dragon-cave environments were built as sets in London warehouses. The castle itself was digitally created, not a real castle used as a filming location.

Where in Portugal was Damsel filmed?

Netflix describes the Portuguese footage as exterior shots of the castle grounds and mountains surrounding Aurea, the film’s fictional kingdom. The Portugal Film Commission lists five places associated with the production: Convent of Christ in Tomar, Sortelha, Serra da Estrela, Batalha Monastery and the Douro Valley.

Those places are reported among the filming locations, but the available sources do not identify which specific shot or scene was filmed at each one. It is therefore not possible to reliably match a particular view in the film to one of the named sites.

Was Aurea’s castle a real filming location?

No. The castle was digitally created. Production designer Patrick Tatopoulos said its design drew on Manueline architecture, a Portuguese style. He described it as “warmer and more flamboyant than the gloomy castles that are typically used for fantasy stories with dragons,” explaining that Aurea needed to seem “a very pleasant place to be on the outside.” Netflix Tudum’s production feature discusses the castle’s design and the film’s locations.

Where were the cave scenes filmed?

Most of the cave environments were built as sets in warehouses in London rather than filmed in natural caves. Millie Bobby Brown recalled, “We filmed in these warehouses in London.” Netflix says the production created seven distinct caverns for the dragon’s maze-like cave system:

  • Entrance Cave
  • Bird Cave
  • Twisted Tunnel
  • Glow Worm Cave
  • Womb Cave
  • Crystal Shaft
  • Temple Cave

The Crystal Shaft included a practically built section for climbing, with visual-effects extensions for the rest. For the Temple Cave, Tatopoulos said, “You’re at the bottom of this circus, almost like a gladiator.” The warehouse quote refers to the constructed production sets, not to natural London caves.
