The award cycle can be confusing: the 98th Oscars recognized the 2025 film year, while the upcoming 99th ceremony is for eligible 2026 films. What is the Academy’s connection to open source?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Linux Foundation established the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) as a neutral home for open-source developers working in film and media. Its purpose is to help people share resources and collaborate on technology for image creation, visual effects, animation and sound. The Foundation is connected to the tools and infrastructure of filmmaking; it does not mean that the Oscars’ film categories judge software, or that a particular film used an ASWF project. What do open-source production tools do?
ASWF’s projects illustrate how such software fits into production workflows. OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing and manipulating image files, with applications in visual effects and animation. OpenRV is an open-source tool for media review and playback. These projects operate in an ecosystem that also includes commercial software: the Foundation identifies integrations with renderers such as Pixar RenderMan and Autodesk Arnold, as well as Blender Cycles. Is there evidence these early films used open-source software?
The sources available for these early 2026-film-year examples do not establish which tools, if any, were used to make The Odyssey, Dune: Part III or Digger. The fact that the Academy supports an open-source foundation is not evidence of a film’s toolchain. Film-specific production credits or reliable technical reporting would be needed to connect a named project to a named movie.

What does the film Flow demonstrate?
Flow, the 2025 Animated Feature winner, provides a documented example of open-source software in an Academy-recognized film: ASWF reported it was made entirely with Blender, an open-source 3D creation suite.
