Do Smart TVs Track What You Watch? ACR, Ads, and Privacy Settings

Some smart TVs use ACR to recognize on-screen content, including in some cases material from external inputs. Learn what viewing data may be used for and which separate privacy settings to review.

Some internet-connected TVs can recognize what is on screen and use viewing data for recommendations, audience measurement, or advertising. The feature is often called Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). What it can detect—and what happens to the resulting data—depends on the TV platform, its settings, and the services you use. ACR, ad personalization, app data collection, and voice features may have separate controls, so switching off one option does not necessarily stop every form of collection.

What is Automatic Content Recognition?

Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR, is technology that can identify content displayed on a screen by comparing a digital signature or fingerprint with a catalog of known programs, ads, games, or other material. Roku says its system samples screen pixels to generate an encrypted fingerprint and matches it against a catalog; according to Roku, personal videos that are not in that catalog will not match. Samsung describes its optional ACR as generating unique signatures and says related information may include viewing history, a Personalized Service ID, and an IP address. Roku support; Samsung support.

That is different from a TV merely knowing which app you opened. Depending on the platform and enabled features, recognition may apply to content from an antenna, streaming services, games, or devices plugged into the TV. Roku says its Smart TV Experience can collect information about streaming, antenna, and connected-device viewing. VIZIO describes viewing behavior that can include programs, ads, gaming content, HDMI-connected devices, and third-party apps. This is not proof that every TV captures every input: coverage depends on the product, settings, and applicable terms. Roku support; VIZIO Viewing Data Supplement.

How can viewing data be used?

Companies describe several potential uses. The details below apply to the named services and disclosures, not to every TV maker.

Recommendations and interactive marketing

Samsung says viewing information can support personalized recommendations and interactive marketing. Its privacy supplement says that enabling SyncPlus or other marketing features may provide video or audio snippets to third-party providers, which can return synchronized content or advertising. Samsung also says turning off those interactive marketing features does not affect other ads shown on the Smart TV. Samsung privacy supplement.

Audience measurement and tailored advertising

VIZIO says viewing data may help estimate program popularity, how many viewers finish a program, and whether or how often commercials are watched. Its supplement also describes tailored ads on VIZIO and third-party platforms or devices, with information potentially associated through identifiers such as an IP address, device ID, email, phone number, or account information. Content discovery and other Roku advertising choices

Roku’s cited ACR help page focuses on More Ways to Watch, a content-discovery feature. Roku separately describes advertising and device-specific personalization choices in its US privacy policy; turning off ACR should not be treated as turning off every Roku ad or service data use. Roku also says data collected or used while ACR was enabled will be retained after the feature is disabled. Roku support; Roku US privacy policy.

Samsung TVs

Samsung says ACR applies if a user opted into Viewing Information Services during setup, and that privacy choices can be controlled or changed. The cited support information does not give one menu path that applies to every model. Search Settings for Viewing Information Services and review the current on-device privacy options for your TV. Samsung support.

Review other privacy controls separately

  • Viewing information or ACR: controls recognition or collection of viewing information where offered.
  • Advertising or advertising ID: may affect platform ad personalization without disabling ACR or app-level advertising.
  • App privacy: streaming apps may have their own data and advertising settings.
  • Voice recognition: review voice or microphone settings separately from viewing-data options.
  • Account privacy: check account-level choices in addition to settings on the TV.

These distinctions are reflected in the platforms’ own privacy information; no single setting should be assumed to stop all collection or all personalized ads. Samsung privacy supplement; VIZIO Ads & Privacy FAQ; Roku US privacy policy.

Does turning off personalized ads stop TV tracking?

Not necessarily. Ad-personalization controls, ACR, app data collection, and voice features can be separate. Samsung says disabling interactive marketing does not affect other Smart TV ads. VIZIO says app partners may still tailor ads even when Limited Ad Tracking is used. Roku says disabling ACR does not erase data collected or used while it was enabled. Read what each control covers, and look for separate viewing-data and advertising choices rather than assuming one opt-out covers the whole TV.

What independent evidence says—and what it does not

A 2024 preprint, Watching TV with the Second-Party, reports experiments on Samsung and LG smart TVs in the UK and US. The authors describe ACR activity while a TV served as an external display, changes in network traffic after opting out, and differences between the two countries. In their tested scenarios, opting out stopped traffic to the ACR domains they had identified; they also reported Samsung transmitting up to twice as much data to ACR domains as LG in the tested setup. These findings are limited to the devices, regions, and scenarios studied. They do not establish how common ACR is across the market, the behavior of every current model, or a universal privacy ranking of brands. 2024 study preprint.

There is also a historical enforcement case that should not be confused with a current audit of all TVs. In 2017, the Federal Trade Commission announced a $2.2 million settlement payment in a case involving VIZIO and viewing histories from 11 million smart televisions. The FTC described allegations involving second-by-second viewing information and cross-device ad targeting, and said the stipulated court order required prominent disclosure and affirmative express consent for the collection and sharing at issue. This was a VIZIO-specific proceeding from 2017, not a measure of how many TVs are tracked today or a description of every manufacturer’s practices. FTC announcement.
