Children with eligible, parent-managed Google Accounts can use YouTube Music through Google’s supervised YouTube experience. Family Link is the parental-management layer, not the music service: a parent chooses a content setting for the child’s account, and that setting applies to both YouTube and YouTube Music. The system limits what children can find and play, but it does not guarantee that every song or video will suit every family.
What Google announced in January 2022
On January 21, 2022, Tech Times reported that Google planned to extend YouTube Music access to children using its supervised YouTube experience. The announcement followed the move away from the child-focused Google Play Music experience and addressed a gap for families who wanted a larger music selection while keeping a child’s account parent-managed. The rollout was described as covering iOS, Android and the web, alongside supervised YouTube access on smart TVs. Tech Times’ January 2022 report is historical; Google’s current help pages explain how supervised accounts work now.
Today, Google describes supervised kid accounts as parent-managed versions of YouTube and YouTube Music. A child uses a signed-in Google Account linked to a parent’s account; creating a child profile only on the parent’s device does not by itself provide YouTube Music access. Google’s setup instructions explain the account requirement.
Is supervised YouTube Music the same as YouTube Kids?
No. YouTube Kids is a separate app with a simpler interface and a smaller, more curated selection. Supervised YouTube and YouTube Music provide access to a broader portion of the main services, subject to the parent’s selected content setting and restrictions on standard features. Google outlines the distinction in its family viewing choices and supervised-account FAQ.

So “YouTube Music for children” does not mean a separate, child-only music catalog. It means restricted access to YouTube Music through a supervised Google Account. YouTube Kids may be the better fit when a younger child needs a narrower selection or a more child-focused interface.
Who can use a supervised account?
Google’s general eligibility description is children under 13, or under the applicable age in their country or region. “Under 13” is a common U.S.-oriented shorthand, not a universal threshold: local rules and account behavior can differ. Google also documents an EU-specific limitation for some accounts whose supervision was set up before April 2021. Check Google’s supervised-account FAQ for current eligibility details.
What do the three content settings allow?
The parent selects one setting for the supervised YouTube experience, and it also governs what the child can find and play on YouTube Music. Google describes these as broad content settings that generally align with age ranges, not guarantees that each item has been individually judged suitable for a particular child.
Explore
Explore generally aligns with content for viewers aged 9 and older. It can include music, gaming, tutorials, educational videos and news. Music may contain mildly offensive language, non-graphic references to alcohol or tobacco, or limited sexualized dancing.

Explore more
Explore more generally aligns with content for viewers aged 13 and older and allows a wider range than Explore. Music may include infrequent explicit profanity, sexual references, derogatory slurs in limited contexts, and depictions of alcohol, tobacco or marijuana. Children can read comments under this setting, but cannot write them.
Most of YouTube
This setting includes almost all YouTube videos except material marked 18+ and other content Google excludes from supervised accounts. It can include live streams, music videos, news, vlogs, gaming, tutorials and educational content. Children can read comments but cannot post them. “Most of YouTube” is not unrestricted adult access.

How to set up YouTube Music through Family Link
The child needs a Google Account linked to the parent’s account and must be signed in on the device where they will use YouTube Music. Google lists Family Link, the child’s YouTube or YouTube Music app, and a web family setup flow as routes for completing supervision. Labels can vary by device, account and app version; if they differ, look for YouTube controls in the child’s Family Link profile.
Use the Family Link app
-
Open the Family Link app on the parent’s device and select the child.
-
Tap Controls, then YouTube.
-
Select YouTube & YouTube Music and follow the on-screen instructions.
-
Choose the content setting for the supervised account.
Set it up from the child’s app
-
Create or confirm the child’s Google Account and link it to the parent’s account.

Where can a child listen?
Google lists the YouTube and YouTube Music apps and websites, eligible smart TVs, Google Assistant-enabled devices, and YouTube on Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo Switch among supported ways to access supervised accounts. Availability depends on country, device, operating-system and app versions, and account configuration. Google says older Android TV devices are not supported; its supervised-account overview and FAQ cover platform details. YouTube Music availability itself also varies by country or region.

Parents can change the content setting, block specific channels, and pause or clear the child’s YouTube search and watch history through Family Link or YouTube Family Center. Family Link also provides device and screen-time controls. Those are separate from the YouTube content setting: choosing Explore does not automatically set a listening-time limit. Google describes available controls in its parental controls guide and supervised-account FAQ.
A supervised account is not a normal adult account with every feature enabled. Google says some standard YouTube and YouTube Music features and settings are unavailable or differ, but the current documentation cited here does not establish a complete feature-by-feature list. Expect restrictions on some social, discovery, sharing, content and personalization functions rather than assuming full adult-account access. Under Explore more and Most of YouTube, children may read comments but cannot write them.

How much protection does supervision provide?
Supervision is a filtering and management system, not a promise that every result is appropriate. Google says its supervised content settings use machine learning, user input and human review, and acknowledges that filtering can make mistakes. Its creator information for supervised accounts explains how content availability is determined.
Music has particular edge cases: lyrics can include profanity or references to sex, drugs, alcohol or violence, while a video’s visuals may be more mature than its title or genre suggests. Broader settings deliberately admit more mature material, and visible comments can include unsuitable language or discussions. Parents can review the chosen setting, block channels, check history and talk with a child about what to do when something unsuitable appears. The system is tier-based and filtered, not a list in which a parent approves every song individually.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
YouTube Music does not appear
-
Confirm the child is signed in with a Google Account linked to the parent; a profile created only on the parent’s device is not enough.
-
Check whether YouTube Music is available in the child’s country or region.
-
Confirm the device and app support supervised accounts. On iOS, Content & Privacy Restrictions may prevent downloading the app.
Google’s setup instructions and FAQ cover these requirements and limitations.

The music seems more mature than expected
Check which content setting is selected. Explore more and Most of YouTube broaden the catalog and can include mature themes, profanity or references to substances in music and videos. The settings are broad classifications, not item-by-item suitability guarantees.
Comments are visible
Children can read comments under Explore more and Most of YouTube, though they cannot write them. If comment visibility is a concern, consider whether a narrower setting or YouTube Kids better suits the child.
A time limit is needed
Set screen-time limits in Family Link or through device controls; changing the YouTube content setting does not create a time limit.
When supervised YouTube Music may fit
-
The child has outgrown YouTube Kids’ smaller catalog and the family wants access to more mainstream music with parental controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
The child already has a supervised Google Account, and the parent is comfortable selecting a tier and checking usage.
-
A narrower catalog and simpler child-focused interface matter more than breadth; in that case, YouTube Kids may be a better match.
