Spotify’s U.S. instructions label the Alexa integration “For: Premium”; podcasts are an exception and still need “on Spotify” in the request.
Before you start
- A Spotify account. Spotify’s U.S. Alexa instructions label this integration For: Premium; they do not establish that the same integration is available to every Free account.
- The Alexa app, signed in to the Amazon account that manages your Echo.
- An Echo that is registered and online, plus access to the Spotify account you intend to link.
- A supported device and marketplace. Spotify lists Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, Echo Show, Amazon Tap, Fire TV Cube, Facebook Portal devices, and Sonos players on its U.S. support page. Availability can differ by country and account region.
This is an account-linking setup, not Bluetooth pairing: Alexa authorizes Spotify as a service, then routes eligible voice requests through that connection. Menu wording can vary by app language, region, or release.
Link Spotify in the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More → Settings.
- Under Alexa Preferences, tap Music & Podcasts.
- Tap Link New Service, choose Spotify, and follow the sign-in and authorization prompts.
- Return to Music & Podcasts and confirm Spotify appears among linked services. Spotify says linked services can be viewed under Manage Services; the label may vary.
Pay attention to which Spotify account is active in the sign-in flow. If you have multiple accounts, Alexa may authorize a different one from the account whose playlists you expect to hear.
Make Spotify the default music service
- In the Alexa app, go to More → Settings → Music & Podcasts.
- Tap Your Default Services.
- Select Spotify for the music category and tap DONE.
Linking grants Alexa access to Spotify; choosing a default tells Alexa which service to use for an unqualified music request. It does not make Spotify the default for every audio category or override a request that explicitly names another service.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Test music playback with voice commands
Try a specific request first, then test an unqualified one to check that the default took effect. Recognition can depend on the account, region, catalog, and device, so a personalized or ambiguous name may need rephrasing.
| Goal | Say |
|---|---|
| Play a playlist | “Alexa, play Discover Weekly.” |
| Play an artist | “Alexa, play Taylor Swift.” |
| Play a song | “Alexa, play [song title] by [artist].” |
| Explicitly choose Spotify | “Alexa, play on Spotify.” |
| Resume, pause, or skip | “Alexa, resume,” “Alexa, pause,” or “Alexa, next.” |
| Play a podcast | “Alexa, play [podcast name] on Spotify.” |
Amazon’s Alexa messaging guidance uses Spotify as an example supported music service. Amazon’s music skills testing guide notes that podcast behavior can depend on provider support and the exact request.

Podcasts still need the service name
Spotify specifically says to add “on Spotify” when asking Alexa to play a podcast, even after Spotify is selected as the default player. Use “Alexa, play [podcast name] on Spotify” rather than assuming an unqualified podcast request will route to Spotify.
If Spotify does not appear in Alexa
- Check that the Alexa app is signed in to the Amazon account that owns or manages the Echo; a different account can show different linked services.
- Look in Music & Podcasts → Link New Service, rather than the general Skills directory, and search for Spotify there.
- Check marketplace and account eligibility. Spotify’s cited page is U.S.-specific and labels the integration for Premium; service availability is not universal.
- Update or restart the Alexa and Spotify apps, then sign out of Spotify and back in before retrying authorization.
- If the authorization page will not load, try again on a different network or phone. Restart the Echo as well.
- If Spotify was linked previously, disable that connection and link it again.
These symptoms can have different causes, including region, account type, app state, or a temporary service problem; no single step is guaranteed to resolve all of them.

If Alexa plays another service instead
- Return to More → Settings → Music & Podcasts → Your Default Services and verify Spotify is selected for music.
- Say “on Spotify” explicitly with a well-known song or playlist. If that works, the account link is functioning and the remaining issue is likely default selection or request interpretation.
- For a podcast, keep “on Spotify” in the request; the default setting does not remove that exception.
- Make the request less ambiguous by including a song title and artist, or the exact playlist name.
- If multiple people use the Echo, test from the Amazon account and voice profile associated with the linked Spotify account.
If Spotify is linked but playback fails
Check authorization and the account
- Confirm Spotify still appears among Alexa’s linked services and is selected as the music default.
- Try a well-known track or artist, then try the same request with “on Spotify.”
- Make sure the account linked in Alexa is the Spotify account that contains the library or playlists you want.
- If the connection appears stale, disable Spotify in Alexa and authorize it again. Spotify’s documented route is More → Settings → Music & Podcasts → Spotify → Disable Skill.
Check Echo connectivity
If other Alexa functions also have trouble reaching online services, troubleshoot the Echo’s Wi-Fi rather than treating the symptom as Spotify-specific. Amazon recommends checking the router connection with another device, confirming the Wi-Fi password, restarting the Alexa device, and reducing interference. Its Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance suggests power-cycling the Echo for 30 seconds and keeping it within about 30 feet (10 meters) of the router during troubleshooting. Where applicable, try the other available 2.4-GHz or 5-GHz network.
Unlink Spotify or use a fallback
To remove the Alexa authorization, open More → Settings → Music & Podcasts, select Spotify, then tap Disable Skill. You can link it again later using the steps above.

If you prefer not to make Spotify the default, leave another service selected and say “on Spotify” for requests you want routed to Spotify. You can also use the Spotify app’s device-picker or casting controls where supported. Bluetooth from a phone is another fallback for playing phone audio through an Echo, but it is not the same as native Spotify account integration and may offer less voice control.

The compatible-device categories on Spotify’s U.S. page are not a guarantee for every Alexa-enabled product or marketplace. Amazon’s international Alexa service availability table lists Spotify in multiple markets, but the listed services differ by country. If Spotify is missing despite following the setup steps, check the service options available in your own Alexa marketplace and the eligibility of your account.
