It recognized selected Wonderbra campaign images or synchronized with a campaign video, then displayed a pre-produced image of model Adriana Cernanova wearing the lingerie being advertised. The “undressing” was a staged advertising reveal—not x-ray vision or a way to expose arbitrary people.
What was Wonderbra Decoder?
Wonderbra Decoder was a mobile advertising activation for Wonderbra, launched in October 2012 in France and the United Kingdom. The campaign featured Adriana Cernanova and was developed by Digitas France, with Publicis 133 also credited. It connected print and outdoor advertising with online video and a phone app, turning a static campaign into an interactive product demonstration. Ads of the World’s campaign listing and Strategies’ campaign credits document the campaign’s date, markets and participants.
Contemporary coverage reported versions for iPhone and Android, but that describes availability at launch, not whether the app or its store listings still work today. E-commerce Magazine’s 2012 account describes the phone experience.
How did the reveal work?
Print and outdoor ads
- The user installed the Wonderbra Decoder app and aimed the phone at a compatible campaign advertisement.
- The app recognized a campaign image or printed marker. Contemporary descriptions vary: some refer to QR-style or black visual codes, while others describe image recognition. The available accounts do not establish one technical method for every placement.
- Once the campaign material was recognized, the phone showed an alternate, prepared image of Cernanova in the Wonderbra lingerie associated with that look.
The effect depended on the specific campaign creative. A random photograph or an unmarked reproduction was not a general-purpose target for the app. Adverblog’s contemporary overview describes the campaign across print, outdoor, video and mobile.

The YouTube video
The video showed Cernanova dressed and moving behind a yellow changing-room curtain. The phone app synchronized with the video and displayed the alternate lingerie reveal. E-commerce Magazine reported that the app analyzed sound from the computer’s speakers to find the relevant moment; that is a contemporary account of the video feature, not independently documented technical specifications. The surviving campaign presentation is available on Vimeo. It noted that the YouTube video needed to be viewed in HD for the decoder to work correctly.
What did users actually see?
They saw branded campaign material: a prepared alternate image or video layer featuring the advertised lingerie, along with product information or spoken descriptions of bra features. The app did not scan a person’s body, reveal a live image beneath fabric, or undress people outside the campaign. “X-ray” and “undress” described the advertising conceit; the actual interaction was a reveal of approved campaign creative. Contemporary reporting describes the app’s reveal mechanism.

Why make an app for the campaign?
The activation gave Wonderbra a way to present multiple lingerie looks and reinforce the positioning that it offered a “bra for all occasions.” Instead of limiting the campaign to a single static image, the brand invited viewers to use a phone with print, outdoor placements and online video. The novelty could attract attention and encourage interaction, while the lingerie itself remained the product being demonstrated. SponsorPitch’s campaign account discusses the product positioning and app concept.
What results were reported?
Publicis Groupe’s annual report said the campaign video received one million views on video platforms including YouTube, the app was downloaded 100,000 times, and average usage time was 13 minutes and 18 seconds. These are agency-group-reported campaign figures, not independently audited measurements. They indicate reported reach and engagement; they do not establish sales, conversion rates or return on advertising spend. Publicis Groupe’s annual report is the source for those numbers.

Why the “undressing” idea is more complicated than the technology
The mechanic made the user an active participant in an interaction framed as undressing a real model. That is different from a conventional lingerie image: the campaign asked the audience to trigger the reveal themselves, making the body the center of the interaction. Contemporary trade coverage described the campaign as provocative. Strategies’ coverage examines its promotional framing and agency credits.
That framing can reasonably be criticized as objectifying, but several questions should remain distinct. The app’s technical behavior was a staged display of campaign material; the legal question concerns image authorization; and the broader ethical question is whether an interactive “undressing” conceit encourages a voyeuristic way of engaging with advertising. The available campaign coverage does not document Cernanova’s specific consent terms or establish that she personally endorsed that mechanic. It also provides no basis for describing the app as deepfake technology or claiming that it violated her consent.

What is known about using it now?
The campaign dates to 2012, and contemporary sources describe its app for the phone platforms available at launch. The available accounts do not establish whether the app can still be downloaded, whether it is compatible with current iOS or Android versions, or whether the original campaign assets remain usable. The campaign also relied on matching particular images or synchronizing with the relevant video moment; lighting, glare, distance, angle, playback quality or audio conditions could affect recognition. A historical description of the app should not be read as a claim that it remains a working consumer utility.
Why Wonderbra Decoder matters as an advertising case
Wonderbra Decoder is an early example of a brand linking offline advertising and online video to a mobile interaction. Its novelty lay less in any extraordinary imaging capability than in asking viewers to use a phone to unlock a second piece of advertising. The same idea that made the campaign memorable also carried a reputational risk: the interactive mechanic could overshadow the lingerie range and invite criticism of how the model was presented. Its reported downloads and viewing figures show attention, but the available evidence does not demonstrate what that attention meant for sales.
