Spotify’s U.S. iOS update made audiobook prices and purchase options easier to find, but it does not mean an iPhone user pays through Apple’s in-app purchase system. Spotify’s current support instructions send iOS users to a web browser to complete payment; the unlocked audiobook can then be listened to in Spotify.
What Spotify’s iOS update changed
Spotify announced the change on May 1, 2025, and said Apple had approved the U.S. app update on May 2. On May 19, Spotify said U.S. users could see audiobook prices, buy individual titles, and purchase extra “Top Up” listening hours. Spotify linked the update to the U.S. court ruling in Epic Games v. Apple. These dates and the account of Apple’s approval come from Spotify’s announcement.

The practical distinction is between finding a purchase route in the iOS experience and completing a payment inside the app. Spotify’s current instructions for unlocking audiobooks say payment is completed on the web, including for iOS users. They do not describe an Apple payment sheet or App Store-billed audiobook purchase.
The announcement concerns users in the United States. Catalogs, eligibility, titles, and payment routes can differ by market and rightsholder; the U.S. instructions should not be assumed to apply everywhere.

Spotify identifies Premium Individual and the manager of Premium Duo or Family as eligible for the included monthly hours; Premium Student is not eligible. Its U.S.-only Audiobooks Access plan also includes 15 monthly audiobook hours, but has ad-supported music and podcasts rather than the other Premium features. Spotify reported more than 700,000 audiobook titles in 2026, but that corporate figure covers titles across markets and is not a count of the U.S. subscriber catalog.
How to unlock an audiobook on an iPhone or iPad
- Open a browser and go to Spotify’s web player.
- Sign in to the Spotify account you use in the iOS app.
- Search for a title, or browse Search → Browse All → Audiobooks.
- Open the audiobook’s page and select Buy.
- Confirm or enter payment details, then select Complete purchase. Spotify lists credit or debit card and PayPal as payment methods for audiobook access.
- Open the Spotify app and find the title in your library to listen. Spotify says unlocked audiobooks can also be downloaded for offline listening within the app.
This is Spotify’s documented iOS route, not a guarantee that every title will have an individual purchase option. A title may instead be part of the subscriber catalog, unavailable in your market, or offered in a different edition. Spotify’s catalog details are in its subscriber catalog help page.

How to get more audiobook listening time
Check Audiobooks+ add-ons
- In Spotify, tap your profile picture.
- Tap Your Premium, then Manage.
- Choose Browse add-ons to see the Audiobooks+ options available for your plan.
Audiobooks+ is recurring, and its hours reset monthly. The available allocation and price can depend on the account and plan; check the offer shown in your Spotify account before subscribing. Spotify describes the add-on in its add-ons help.
Buy a one-time top-up
Spotify’s support flow directs users to Audiobook listening time → Top-ups → Top up. Payment methods can include credit or debit card, PayPal, or Google Play Billing where supported. Top-ups are distinct from a recurring Audiobooks+ subscription and are valid for 12 months from purchase. What “purchase” means on Spotify
A one-time payment unlocks access to a particular audiobook on the Spotify account; it does not transfer ownership of the audiobook content. Spotify’s Audiobook Purchase Terms say Spotify and its partners retain ownership. Offline downloads are for listening in Spotify, not unrestricted audio files that can be exported to another app.
Keep that access model separate from listening-hour products. A separately unlocked title does not use the monthly Premium audiobook allowance, while catalog listening consumes hours. Included plan hours and Audiobooks+ hours reset monthly; unused included hours expire rather than carrying forward.

Family, Duo, and cancellation details
On Premium Family and Duo, the manager’s included audiobook time is not automatically shared with every member. Members may need separate listening time, and some purchases must be completed by the plan manager. Spotify explains the plan rules in its Premium audiobook plan guidance.
Top-ups and subscriptions also have different cancellation consequences. Spotify states that canceling Premium can remove access to purchased add-on hours; unused top-ups may also be affected unless the user resubscribes within the stated period. Check the account’s current terms before canceling, particularly if listening hours remain.

If the purchase or audiobook does not appear
- Check that the account country and title availability match the U.S. purchase route.
- Make sure the browser and iOS app are signed in to the same Spotify account.
- Try the web player directly if a purchase link in the app does not work.
- For Audiobooks+ or top-ups, check whether your plan is eligible and whether you are the Duo or Family manager.
- If a title is unlocked but missing, check Your Library → Audiobooks and refresh the account. If it still does not appear, contact Spotify Support.
Spotify does not promise that every audiobook is available for individual purchase. Catalog inclusion and separately unlocked availability can differ by country, change over time, or depend on rightsholder decisions.

- Already have an eligible Spotify plan: Check whether the book is in the subscriber catalog before paying separately. If you have used the included hours, compare a one-time top-up with Audiobooks+, accounting for the former’s 12-month validity and the latter’s monthly reset.
- Need one specific title: An individual unlock is separate from listening hours, but remains access through Spotify rather than ownership of a transferable file.
- Want unrestricted ownership or a file for another app: Spotify’s terms do not provide that. Check the terms of a retailer such as Apple Books before buying; availability and terms vary by title and country.
- Do not otherwise want Spotify Premium: Compare the account-specific cost and limits of Spotify’s options with audiobook-focused services such as Audible or Libro.fm. Their current prices, membership terms, and title availability should be checked directly rather than assumed.
