Yes—Amazon Prime Video supports HDR on compatible titles and devices. In the United States, Amazon’s plan information as of August 18, 2026 lists HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision with standard Prime membership. UHD/4K and Dolby Atmos are separate features associated with Prime Video Ultra. Whether a particular stream actually appears in HDR depends on the title, playback device, display, HDMI path, and connection.

What HDR formats does Prime Video support?

HDR, or high dynamic range, can preserve more detail across bright highlights and dark areas and produce a wider range of color than standard dynamic range (SDR). The result depends on the HDR master and the display’s brightness, contrast, color handling, and settings; an HDR label alone does not guarantee a dramatic improvement.

  • HDR10: An open, widely supported HDR format and a common compatibility baseline.
  • HDR10+: Uses dynamic metadata to guide tone mapping scene by scene or across frame sequences, when the title and equipment support it.
  • Dolby Vision: A proprietary HDR format with dynamic metadata. Both the content and the entire playback chain must support Dolby Vision.

Amazon’s current U.S. plan announcement lists all three formats as standard Prime benefits. Its delivery specifications also describe HDR production using the open format commonly called HDR10; that production requirement does not mean every consumer title is offered in HDR10. Amazon’s U.S. plan announcement · Amazon’s HDR delivery specifications

HDR is not the same as 4K

HDR describes image range and color handling; UHD/4K describes resolution. A title may be HDR without being delivered in 4K to a particular viewer, or be 4K without HDR. Amazon’s current U.S. plan distinction makes it especially important to check the two labels separately.

HDR10+ Advanced is an early rollout

HDR10+ Advanced has been associated with select Prime Video content and certain 2026 Samsung television models. The published material does not establish a complete supported-title or device list, so do not assume it is available across Prime Video or on every Samsung TV. Is HDR included with Amazon Prime?

For U.S. customers, Amazon’s April 10, 2026 announcement places HDR formats in standard Prime and UHD/4K in Prime Video Ultra. The following prices and features reflect Amazon’s U.S. information checked August 18, 2026; availability and terms can differ outside the United States or change later.

U.S. plan Price stated by Amazon Video and other listed features
Prime membership $14.99 per month or $139 per year HD, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision; standard stream, download, and ad terms apply.
Prime Video Ultra $4.99 per month or $45.99 per year for customers with an annual Prime membership Adds ad-free viewing, UHD/4K, Dolby Atmos, up to five simultaneous streams, and up to 100 downloads.

Amazon says Ultra is currently available only in the United States. The key distinction is that HDR is not, under these current U.S. terms, a reason by itself to upgrade: the upgrade’s relevant video benefit is UHD/4K, alongside its other listed features. Amazon’s plan details · Prime Video help on availability and streaming quality

What do you need to watch Prime Video in HDR?

HDR works only when the key parts of the signal path agree. Check these requirements rather than relying on a TV’s “4K” label or a device’s general HDR branding.

  • A title offered in HDR: Availability varies by title, rights, location, and how the title is accessed.
  • A compatible app and playback device: Support differs by model, operating system, app implementation, and configuration.
  • A compatible HDMI chain, if using an external player: Amazon specifies HDCP 2.2 for external-device connections used for UHD and/or HDR. An older receiver, soundbar, switch, or cable path can interrupt the required signal or copy-protection handshake. For Dolby Vision, Amazon says both the display and any additional connected device must support that format.
  • Stable internet and current software: Amazon can reduce stream quality when bandwidth or other conditions threaten uninterrupted playback; its reviewed guidance does not establish one universal HDR-specific speed threshold.

Which devices can play Prime Video in HDR?

Amazon’s device pages give platform-level maximums, not a guarantee that every model plays HDR—or a particular HDR format. Confirm the exact model, operating system, app, and display combination before drawing conclusions.

Device category Amazon’s listed platform maximum What that means for HDR
Fire TV and Fire TV Stick Up to Ultra HD Check the particular model and connected display for support of the desired HDR format.
Android devices Up to Ultra HD on Amazon’s general device page This platform maximum does not establish HDR support for every phone, tablet, or configuration.
iPhone and iPad Up to HD Amazon’s listed maximum is HD, not UHD/4K; do not infer HDR availability from the platform alone.
Windows 10/11 computers Up to HD Amazon’s listed maximum is HD, not UHD/4K; check the specific app or browser and display for HDR support.
Fire tablets Up to HD The listed platform maximum does not establish HDR playback.
Echo devices with screens Standard definition Not a route to HDR viewing.
Meta Quest devices Up to HD Amazon’s listed maximum is HD.
Android Automotive Up to Ultra HD on selected vehicles Availability is limited to selected vehicles and does not establish HDR on every system.

These are Amazon’s published platform descriptions, not a model-by-model HDR compatibility list. Game consoles and other streaming boxes also need model-specific verification; general platform capability or support in another streaming app does not prove that Prime Video delivers the same format. Built-in TV app or external streamer?

A current TV app can reduce HDMI and HDCP variables because playback goes directly to the display, but app support and performance vary by TV model. An external streamer may offer a faster interface or longer software support, but adds an HDMI connection and possibly a receiver or switch to the signal chain. Neither is universally better; for troubleshooting, connect an external player directly to the TV and remove intermediary equipment temporarily.

How can you tell whether Prime Video is really playing HDR?

  1. Open the title’s details page and look for available quality and format labels such as HDR, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, or UHD. The labels and their placement can vary by app and device.
  2. Start playback, then open the television’s picture or signal-information panel. Look for the incoming signal label—such as HDR, HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision.
  3. If the television reports SDR, try a second title clearly labeled for HDR. If the second title also arrives in SDR, investigate the device and signal path; if it does not, the first title’s availability may be the issue.

A title badge advertises an available format; it does not prove which format the display is receiving now. Likewise, a TV picture preset named “HDR” or “Cinema HDR” does not prove an HDR source is coming in. Check the incoming signal, not only the selected picture mode.

Why is Prime Video playing in SDR?

The title or catalogue entry is not HDR

Not every Prime Video title is offered in HDR. Availability can vary by location, rights, and whether a title is included with a subscription, rented, purchased, or accessed through an add-on channel. Amazon’s title availability and quality guidance

You are expecting 4K when the issue is resolution

Under Amazon’s current U.S. plan structure, standard Prime includes HDR formats while UHD/4K is listed with Ultra. A missing UHD label does not, by itself, show that HDR is missing; check the incoming signal and the title’s format separately. Amazon’s current U.S. plan table

The device, app, or format is unsupported

One part of the chain may support HDR10 but not HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. A streamer’s ability to output Dolby Vision in another app does not guarantee the same format through its Prime Video app. Amazon notes that device requirements and supported features can differ and change. The TV setting or HDMI chain blocks the signal

Some televisions require an input-specific enhanced, UHD, or deep-color setting; the exact label and menu location vary by manufacturer, so consult the TV manual. If an external device is involved, test it directly connected to the TV. Amazon identifies HDCP 2.2 as relevant to UHD/HDR connections, and a receiver, switch, soundbar, or other link may prevent format pass-through.

Software or network conditions reduce playback quality

Outdated device software, app versions, or browser versions can cause compatibility problems. Network congestion or other playback conditions can prompt Amazon to lower quality, so an HDR stream may not stay at its highest available quality. Amazon recommends updating software and troubleshooting network conditions; it does not publish one HDR speed figure that applies to every setup.

A VPN or proxy interferes

For diagnosis, temporarily disable VPN or proxy services, then try playback again. Amazon includes this step in its playback troubleshooting guidance.

What to do when HDR does not appear

  1. Confirm the title format: Check that the title page lists HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision.
  2. Test another HDR-labeled title: This helps separate a title or catalogue limitation from a device-wide problem.
  3. Simplify the playback path: Try the TV’s built-in Prime Video app, or connect the external streamer directly to the TV.
  4. Check the TV’s input setting: Enable the manufacturer’s enhanced HDMI, UHD, or deep-color option if the manual says it is needed.
  5. Check HDCP and format compatibility: For an external UHD/HDR connection, verify HDCP 2.2 support and confirm each component passes the format you are testing.
  6. Update and restart: Update the TV, playback device, Prime Video app, or browser. Close the app and reboot the device; restart the router if connection problems persist.
  7. Test without VPN or proxy: Disable network-routing services temporarily.
  8. Read the incoming signal: Use the TV’s signal-information panel to distinguish HDR from SDR.
  9. Try another device: If the same title arrives in HDR on another supported device, the original device, app, or HDMI path is the likely limiting factor.

Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking bandwidth, restarting equipment, and reinstalling the app if necessary. Amazon’s playback troubleshooting steps

Is Prime Video Ultra worth it if you mainly want HDR?

For a U.S. viewer whose only goal is HDR, Amazon’s current plan table gives no HDR-only reason to upgrade: standard Prime lists HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. Ultra is more relevant if you also want UHD/4K, Dolby Atmos, ad-free viewing, additional simultaneous streams, or a higher download limit. Consider whether the titles and devices you use offer those benefits before subscribing. Amazon’s Ultra features and U.S. pricing

Choosing among HDR formats

No format logo guarantees the best-looking picture on every television. HDR10 is the broad-compatibility baseline; HDR10+ and Dolby Vision can provide dynamic metadata when both the title and playback chain support them. The visible result still depends heavily on the display’s brightness, black level, tone mapping, and calibration, as well as the quality of the title’s master. In practice, reliable end-to-end support matters more than choosing a format in isolation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Prime Video have Dolby Vision?

Amazon lists Dolby Vision with standard Prime membership in the United States as of August 18, 2026. A compatible title, display, app, and complete device chain are still required.

Can I watch Prime Video HDR on an iPhone?

Amazon lists iPhone and iPad playback up to HD, but that platform maximum does not establish HDR support. Check the exact device and app capabilities rather than assuming HDR from an HDR-capable screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every 4K Prime Video title support HDR?

No. UHD/4K and HDR are different properties, and Amazon says not all titles are available in every resolution or format.

Does Dolby Vision require a special HDMI cable?

The available Amazon guidance specifies HDCP 2.2 for external UHD/HDR connections, not a particular cable brand. First test the streamer directly connected to the TV and verify every device in the chain supports Dolby Vision.

Is HDR10+ Advanced available on every Samsung TV?

No such universal availability is established. The 2026 rollout has been reported for select content and certain 2026 Samsung TV models; verify support for the exact title and model.
