“The new place to slide into” was Instagram’s Direct inbox, not a new feed, profile area, or dating feature. In 2020, Facebook began connecting Instagram Direct with Messenger, adding cross-app messaging and a set of Messenger-style tools. The headline describes that rollout—not a newly launched Instagram feature in 2026.
What was the “new place” on Instagram?
“Slide into someone’s DMs” means sending them a private direct message. In this case, the phrase pointed to Instagram Direct’s redesigned, Messenger-connected inbox. Facebook was integrating messaging between Instagram and Messenger, rather than moving Instagram users to a separate public destination or requiring them to use the standalone Messenger app.
Early rollout reports described the familiar paper-airplane Direct icon changing to a Messenger-style icon after users accepted the update. That was a report about the 2020 interface, not a reliable description of Instagram’s current icon. Droid Life reported on the early rollout; Meta later formally announced the Messenger experience for Instagram.
What changed in Instagram Direct?
The integration was meant to let Instagram and Messenger users communicate across the two services while bringing additional messaging tools into Instagram. Meta’s September 2020 announcement described these features:
#1 Best Overall
- Universal unlocked. Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other prepaid carriers.

- Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging. Power through day after day with a 5200mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.****
- Cross-app messaging and video calls: Instagram and Messenger users could communicate without switching to the other service. Meta said a Messenger user could contact an Instagram user without that person downloading Messenger.
- Replies and forwarding: Users could respond to a particular message and forward content to as many as five friends or groups, according to Meta’s launch announcement.
- Reactions and effects: Users could choose custom emoji reactions and add animated effects to messages.
- Chat customization: Color gradients and themes could change a conversation’s appearance.
- Selfie stickers: Users could make Boomerang-like stickers from selfies.
- Watch Together: People on video calls could watch supported video content together.
- Message controls and safety tools: Meta described controls for deciding who could contact a user and where incoming requests appeared, alongside enhanced reporting and blocking options, including cross-platform blocking suggestions.
These are features Meta announced for the 2020 update, not a guarantee that every feature is available to every account today. Its initial announcement said the rollout began in selected countries and would expand. In November 2020, Meta said the new Messenger-style features were globally available to users who chose to update, while Vanish Mode was still rolling out. Meta’s November update gives that later rollout context.
Could Facebook Messenger users message Instagram users?
That was the point of the cross-app integration: people on Messenger could message or call Instagram users, and Instagram users could communicate across the services. It did not mean that every Facebook account could automatically reach every Instagram account. Meta said users could choose where incoming messages and calls appeared: in regular chats, in Message Requests, or nowhere. The actual experience depended on rollout availability and users’ message controls.

If you receive an unwanted message, use Instagram’s available message-request, blocking, and reporting controls. The 2020 announcements establish that these controls were part of the planned experience, but they do not establish current menu names or paths, which can change.
What was Vanish Mode?
Vanish Mode was an optional setting for a conversation, not the default behavior for ordinary chats. Meta described seen messages disappearing after the user left the conversation. At its November 2020 introduction, the company said the mode was limited to one-to-one conversations between people who followed each other on Instagram or were connected on Messenger; it also described screenshot notifications as part of the feature’s safety design. Meta’s announcement explains the original Vanish Mode rules.

Disappearing from a chat is not the same as being impossible to preserve. A recipient could photograph the screen, copy content, or record it with another device; a screenshot alert cannot prevent those actions.
When did the Instagram-Messenger rollout happen?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| August 17, 2020 | Reports surfaced that Facebook was testing or beginning to roll out a Messenger-style replacement for Instagram Direct. Droid Life covered the early rollout. |
| September 30, 2020 | Facebook formally announced the Messenger experience for Instagram, including cross-app communication and new messaging features. Meta’s announcement is the primary source for the feature list. |
| November 18, 2020 | Meta said the new messaging features were globally available to users who chose to update, while Vanish Mode was still rolling out. Meta’s November announcement described the later stage. |
Was the update mandatory, and did it remove Instagram Direct?
Meta presented the 2020 upgrade as a choice: users could decide whether to update immediately to the new Messenger experience. It was not offered to every account at once; Meta described a rollout that began in selected countries and expanded over time, so availability could differ by country, account, operating system, and stage of rollout.

Instagram Direct was not being removed as a concept. The change connected its technical and visual experience with Messenger, while Meta said existing Instagram messages and calls from Instagram contacts would remain accessible within Instagram. The announcement concerned Instagram and Messenger; it did not mean Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp had instantly become one app.
