Discovery CEO David Zaslav reportedly called HBO Max underpriced, signaling that a future increase is possible. But the reporting behind the claim does not establish a confirmed price hike, effective date, or replacement prices. “Imminent” is not a published billing deadline.
What is actually known about a possible price increase?
The claim traces to a September 12, 2025 Tech Times report about comments attributed to Zaslav in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The report described a likely future increase, but did not identify a new rate or when it might take effect. You can read the Tech Times report.
That leaves an important difference between executive signaling and a change subscribers can plan around. Zaslav’s reported view that the service is underpriced suggests WBD sees room to charge more; it is not the same as a formal rate-card announcement. A confirmed change would need details such as the affected plans, new prices, and implementation timing. Those details are not established by the cited reporting.
What did David Zaslav reportedly say?
According to the report, Zaslav argued that HBO Max’s prices did not fully reflect the quality of its programming and service. “Underpriced” is his reported assessment of the service’s value, not a published promise to raise every subscriber’s bill.

The same report said Zaslav wanted to delay a password-sharing crackdown while the company focused on getting users to value the service. That account does not provide a final enforcement date or full policy terms. It should not be read as confirmation that either a price increase or a broader crackdown was scheduled.
What monthly prices were reported?
Tech Times listed these U.S. monthly prices in its September 2025 report. They are historical figures from that report, not a verified current rate card.

Plan names, prices, included features, and availability can change. For a purchase decision, check the current terms shown at HBO Max or by the company that bills your subscription. The final charge can also depend on taxes, a promotion, a legacy plan, or third-party billing.
Why might WBD think the service can support higher prices?
The business case is plausible, but it is analysis rather than confirmation of a particular increase. HBO Max brings together HBO programming and Warner Bros. films, and WBD has also adjusted how it sells access and features.

- More ways to monetize accounts: In an April 22, 2025 announcement, WBD introduced a U.S. Extra Member Add-On at $7.99 per month. It was limited to one add-on per account and generally aimed at eligible subscribers billed directly by Max, rather than people subscribed through bundles. See WBD’s Extra Member Add-On announcement for the terms.
- Sports and news within paid tiers: In February 2025, WBD said live sports and news would remain in Standard and Premium tiers without an additional charge under that announced U.S. structure. The announcement described availability within those tiers; it did not mean every live program would be commercial-free. See WBD’s announcement on sports and news.
- A broader value proposition: A service with prestige series, films, and live programming may have more room to charge than one selling a narrower catalog. Whether that value is worth the price depends on what a household actually watches.
Streaming companies can pursue revenue through several routes—subscription prices, advertising, annual plans, and account-sharing fees. The cited announcements illustrate some of those mechanisms for Max, but do not establish which one WBD will use next or whether it will change prices across all plans.
What should existing subscribers check?
If WBD formally changes prices or plan terms, the practical effect may depend on how and when you subscribed. Look at the billing account and renewal details that apply to your plan rather than assuming every subscriber will be treated alike.

- Billing provider: Direct subscribers should check their account notices. If Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, a cable company, or another partner bills you, that provider may handle notices and subscription controls.
- Renewal timing: An annual subscriber may encounter a change at renewal rather than during the prepaid term; confirm the terms attached to your own subscription.
- Legacy or promotional terms: A grandfathered plan or discount may have separate conditions. Changing plans could affect benefits or pricing, so review the change screen before confirming.
- Plan features: Compare advertising, resolution, simultaneous streams, downloads, and any live programming you use. A change may involve plan features as well as a price.
- Household sharing: The Extra Member Add-On is a separate, eligibility-dependent option—not the same thing as a general password-sharing enforcement policy. Check WBD’s terms before relying on it.
Should you subscribe now?
Do not subscribe solely because a headline says a hike is imminent: the reported comments do not provide a deadline. If you already want the service, choose a plan based on viewing habits, price, flexibility, and the terms actually offered at checkout.

- Choose monthly billing if you want the freedom to cancel after a series or film run, or if your viewing varies from month to month.
- Consider an annual plan only when the displayed savings and renewal price are clear and you expect to use the service for most of the year. Prepayment can reduce exposure to monthly price changes during the paid term, but it also ties up money and reduces flexibility.
- Check the offer dates: WBD announced a limited U.S. promotion offering 40% savings on selected annual plans to eligible new and returning subscribers from June 18 through July 15, 2026. That offer has ended; its terms are not a current signup deal. Details are in WBD’s promotion announcement.
- Compare what you watch: If you mainly want one show, subscribing for the months you will watch it may make more sense than keeping a service year-round. When comparing alternatives, match advertising, video quality, streams, downloads, live content, and billing terms—not just the monthly sticker price.
