LG has discontinued its current consumer Blu-ray player lineup, including its 4K Ultra HD models, but that does not mean Blu-ray discs are going away. Reports in December 2024 said the company had stopped production and was selling remaining stock; LG’s U.S. product page now marks the UBK90 discontinued. LG Korea reportedly left open a possible return if demand improves, so the evidence supports an end to the current lineup—not a definitive promise never to make another player.
What LG discontinued
The news concerns LG’s consumer Blu-ray and DVD players: standalone devices for playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, standard Blu-ray discs and, on some models, DVDs. It does not establish that LG simultaneously ended every optical drive, recorder or professional disc product worldwide.
- UBK80: LG 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.
- UBK90: LG 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision. LG’s U.S. product page labels it “DISCONTINUED” and says it is no longer available for sale: LG UBK90 product page.
- BP250: A standard Blu-ray/DVD player documented in LG Australia’s specifications; regional lineups varied. LG BP250 specifications.
LG’s UBK90 specifications describe 4K disc playback, Dolby Vision, HDR, 3D Blu-ray and DVD playback, streaming and other media features. Those are historical capabilities, not confirmation of current availability or ongoing app support. LG UBK90 specifications.
When production reportedly ended—and what LG has confirmed
LG’s last widely reported 4K players, the UBK80 and UBK90, were introduced in 2018. No successors were reported during the following six years. In December 2024, FlatpanelsHD reported that LG had stopped producing its Blu-ray players and was selling through remaining inventory. FlatpanelsHD’s report; Ars Technica’s coverage.

There is an important limit to that wording: the reporting said LG Korea did not confirm an irreversible, worldwide exit and left open a return if demand improved. The most accurate description is that LG has discontinued its current consumer lineup and appears to have stopped production. It is not established that LG announced it would never make another player.
The timeline matters: the production news broke in December 2024, rather than representing a sudden 2026 decision. As of August 18, 2026, LG’s U.S. UBK90 page still lists the model as discontinued.
Why LG may have left the player business
LG has not provided a single confirmed explanation in the reporting cited here. The likely context is a combination of streaming-first viewing habits, a low-volume category and an aging product line: the last major LG 4K players dated from 2018. Game consoles also give some households a way to play discs without buying a separate machine. These are market explanations, not an official statement of LG’s reasoning.

What discontinuation means for current LG owners
A discontinued player does not stop reading discs just because its manufacturer stopped making the model. If your LG reliably plays your collection, delivers the picture and sound you want, and connects to your system, there is no inherent reason to replace it now.
Discontinuation can matter when a device needs service or when you rely on network features. Warranty coverage depends on the purchase date and region; parts may become harder to find, and streaming apps on aging networked electronics can lose support. That app risk is not a confirmed universal outcome for every LG player. Disc playback and built-in streaming are separate uses, so an app problem does not by itself mean the disc drive has failed.
A backup may make sense if the player is already showing disc-reading problems, your collection is difficult to replace, or you depend on a particular feature such as Dolby Vision. Before buying a used or remaining-stock UBK80 or UBK90, check the exact model, included remote, return terms, region compatibility and operation with both a standard Blu-ray and a 4K disc. Unknown drive wear, expired or limited warranty and scarcity-inflated prices can make a used unit a poor value.

LG’s exit is not the end of Blu-ray
The retreat of one manufacturer from dedicated players is not proof that discs have stopped being made or that existing discs no longer work. Streaming has become the default for many viewers, but physical media can still serve collectors and people who want a library they can play without relying on a streaming service’s catalogue.
Ars Technica, citing Circana, reported about $1.34 billion in U.S. Blu-ray and DVD sales for the year ending March 2023. That is a historical U.S. sales figure, not a current global market total, but it illustrates why a shrinking mass-market hardware category is not the same as a vanished format. How to choose a replacement
Start with the discs and equipment you actually use. A player that handles your formats and connects correctly to your television or receiver matters more than a long feature list.
- Disc formats: Confirm support for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD and CD as needed. Standard Blu-ray and DVD players are commonly region-limited. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are generally less region-restricted, but a bundled Blu-ray disc may still have regional coding.
- HDR: Check for the formats your television and discs use, such as Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or HDR10. A feature name alone does not guarantee automatic switching or the behavior you expect in your setup.
- Audio and connections: If you use an older receiver, check for dual HDMI outputs or the specific digital audio connection it needs. Do not assume a player has legacy outputs without checking its specifications.
- Network features: Buy primarily for streaming only if the apps matter and are currently supported; built-in apps on a disc player can age differently from its disc playback.
- Region and seller: Verify disc-region needs and whether a unit is modified or advertised as region-free. Such modifications or services require separate scrutiny and may affect warranty coverage.
Panasonic DP-UB450P-K: lower-cost 4K option
Panasonic’s U.S. store listed the DP-UB450P-K at $239.99 in the August 2026 price snapshot. It is a candidate for buyers seeking a less expensive Panasonic 4K player with Dolby Vision. Verify audio outputs, networking and other requirements against the current product listing before purchase; availability and prices can change. Panasonic’s U.S. Blu-ray and DVD store.
Panasonic DP-UB820-K: feature-rich enthusiast option
The DP-UB820-K was listed at $549.99 in the same U.S. store snapshot and is positioned for buyers seeking Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and advanced video processing. It may be more player than needed if you only watch DVDs or standard Blu-rays, or do not have a 4K HDR television. The listed price is time-sensitive, not a guaranteed current or recurring price. Sony UBP-X800M2: a midrange alternative
Sony listed the UBP-X800M2 at $329.99 on its U.S. store in the August 2026 snapshot. Its dual HDMI outputs may suit a system with an older AV receiver. Check how Dolby Vision is handled for your setup, along with current connectivity and format details; do not treat built-in streaming apps as a permanent replacement for a dedicated streaming device. Sony UBP-X800M2 product page.
Standard Blu-ray and DVD only
If you do not own 4K discs, a standard player may be enough. Panasonic’s U.S. store listed DMP-BD90P-K at $84.99 and DMP-BD84P-K at $89.99 in the August 2026 snapshot. These are not 4K Ultra HD players; confirm the exact model and required outputs before buying. Panasonic’s U.S. Blu-ray and DVD store.
Disc-equipped game consoles
A disc-drive PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X can make sense if you want a console as well as movie playback. It is not automatically a like-for-like replacement: console disc capabilities and home-theater features differ, and a console is a larger, more complex purchase if you only want to watch films. Digital-only console versions cannot play discs.
Should you buy a remaining LG player?
A used or remaining-stock UBK90 can appeal if you specifically want a familiar LG interface or its Dolby Vision support. But LG’s U.S. product page marks it discontinued, and the price is not an official current sale offer. Compare the seller’s price with current Panasonic and Sony listings, and avoid paying a scarcity premium for a unit with uncertain condition or no meaningful return protection. A discontinued LG player is best treated as a carefully checked backup or used purchase, not a future-proof new-product choice.
