Netflix Reportedly Developed a ‘Squid Game’ Game as It Targeted 86 Titles for 2023

On December 17, 2023, Tech Times reported that Netflix was working on a game based on Squid Game while targeting 86 games for subscribers during 2023. The report described a project in development—not a released game or a full launch announcement. It gave no title, developer, release date, or confirmed platforms for the Squid Game project.

What Netflix was reportedly making

The December 2023 report said the project would draw on challenges familiar from Squid Game. It did not identify a formal game title or explain whether Netflix was developing it internally, commissioning an outside studio, or still exploring the concept. No trailer, screenshots, or gameplay demonstration were included. Tech Times’ December 17, 2023 report is the basis for the project details.

What the “86 titles” figure meant

The 86 figure referred to Netflix’s reported target for its broader games roadmap in 2023. It was not a count of Squid Game games, nor does the report verify that 86 games were ultimately released. A target, a game in development, and a title actually available to subscribers are different measures; the report supplied no final end-of-year tally or breakdown by country and device.

How the project fit Netflix’s gaming strategy

Netflix was using games to extend its entertainment offering beyond watching shows and films. Turning a recognizable series into an interactive experience could give subscribers another way to engage with a franchise between seasons, while games included in a membership could add value to the service and encourage more frequent use. The report also described investment in studios and acquisitions, suggesting a broader effort rather than a single franchise tie-in.

Acquisitions and studio development

The report identified Night School Studio, known for Oxenfree, and Spry Fox, known for Cozy Grove, among Netflix’s gaming investments. It also cited Netflix gaming studios in Helsinki and California. These examples show the range of activity described at the time, but none was identified as the developer of the Squid Game project.

A separate example: Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was another recognizable property offered through Netflix as a mobile game, according to the report. Its arrival illustrated Netflix’s distribution of established games alongside its studio investments. It does not establish that the Squid Game project had been finished, released, or designed for the same platforms.

What was—and was not—known about gameplay

The report suggested that the game would use challenges familiar from the series, but it did not specify which ones. It also left the format and systems open. There was no confirmed information about:

  • Single-player or multiplayer play, or whether players would compete against one another.
  • Characters from the show versus player-created avatars.
  • Progression, rankings, elimination rules, advertising, or in-game purchases.
  • Whether the game would follow the television plot or adapt the format of Squid Game: The Challenge.

The report mentioned The Challenge as context for the timing, not as evidence that the reality competition caused development or would be the game’s source material.

Why the franchise could work as a game—and the design questions it raises

Squid Game has instantly recognizable competitions and rules, which could lend themselves to short interactive rounds. That is a design possibility, not a description of the reported project. Translating the show into a game would also raise practical questions: how to keep repeated challenges engaging, how to handle the series’ grim tone, and how to moderate a competitive experience if it involved online players. Netflix had not answered those questions in the report.

What subscribers still could not tell from the report

The article did not establish the game’s name, developer, release window, platform list, regional availability, or whether it would require a particular Netflix plan. It also did not confirm whether the title would be available on iPhone, Android, television, PC, or console. Netflix games were presented as a subscriber benefit, but that general access model does not prove that every title works on every device or is offered in every country.
