Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn June 27, 2024, YouTube announced two new Premium features, three opt-in experiments and a possible expansion of its subscription lineup. The features were not available identically to every subscriber: device, country, account and test eligibility mattered. YouTube’s reference to “more plan options” was only a preview of possibilities, not a launch of new tiers with confirmed prices or rules.
What YouTube Premium actually announced
YouTube’s official announcement grouped the update into features that were rolling out and experiments that Premium members could test. The distinction matters because experiments could expire or change, while the announcement did not promise permanent inclusion.
Jump Ahead
Jump Ahead appears after a viewer double-taps to skip forward. YouTube said it combines artificial intelligence with viewing data to identify a likely high-interest moment, allowing the viewer to jump there instead of scrubbing manually.
At announcement time, Jump Ahead was available to Premium subscribers in the United States using Android. YouTube said iOS availability would follow “in the next few weeks”; that statement should not be read as confirmation that an iOS rollout had already happened. The feature can also skip introductions, qualifications or context that a viewer considers important, so manual scrubbing remains preferable for detailed or documentary viewing.

Picture-in-picture for YouTube Shorts
Premium subscribers on Android could continue watching YouTube Shorts in a floating picture-in-picture window while using another app. YouTube described this as an Android Premium rollout, not a universal feature for iPhone, desktop, television or every country.
The three Premium experiments
Members could review available tests at YouTube’s experimental-features page. The announcement and contemporaneous coverage indicated that only one experiment could be active for an account at a time.
Shorts Smart Downloads
This Android experiment automatically downloads a batch of recommended Shorts for offline viewing. It may be convenient during travel or unreliable connectivity, but automatic downloads can consume storage and mobile data, and the recommendations may not match what a viewer would have chosen manually. The announcement established the feature’s purpose but did not specify a universal storage quota or a complete current settings path.
Conversational AI
Conversational AI returned as an experiment for Premium users in the United States on Android. An Ask control could appear beneath select videos, allowing questions about the video and suggestions for related content.

“Select videos” is a material restriction: this was not presented as a general chatbot available beneath every upload. Answers should also be treated as assistance rather than authority, particularly when a video concerns medical, legal, financial or technical decisions.
Redesigned desktop Watch Page
YouTube tested a redesigned web Watch Page intended to make related content and comments easier to reach. It was an interface experiment, not a confirmed permanent redesign, so navigation could change again or the test could disappear.
How to try an experiment
- Sign in to the Google account that holds the YouTube Premium subscription.
- Open youtube.com/new.
- Review the tests shown for that account and select one available experiment.
- Use the feature on its specified device or platform.
- Send feedback through YouTube’s feedback tool if the test provides that option.
The page may require sign-in and can show different tests according to country, device, subscription status, rollout stage or participant limits. Tests can expire, disappear or be limited to selected videos. A missing test is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a billing problem.

YouTube said it was working toward more Premium plan options in three broad ways:

No plan names, prices, launch dates, eligibility rules or sharing mechanics were announced. The statement did not establish whether sharing would involve a cheaper multi-person tier, paid extra members, broader family eligibility, a regional add-on or only selected benefits such as ad-free video or YouTube Music.
Comparisons with Netflix’s extra-member approach are industry context, not evidence of YouTube’s intended product. YouTube also did not specify household rules, account limits, geographic restrictions, who would control shared access or whether YouTube Music would be included.
Historical U.S. pricing context
The following figures were reported for the United States on June 27, 2024. They are historical reference points, not verified August 2026 prices. Check the official YouTube Premium page for the price and plans offered to your account and region.
| Plan reported in June 2024 | Price at that time | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | $13.99 per month | U.S. figure reported by The Verge; not a current price claim |
| Individual annual | $139.99 for 12 months | U.S. figure reported June 27, 2024 |
| Family | $22.99 per month | U.S. figure reported June 27, 2024 |
| Student | $7.99 per month | U.S. figure reported June 27, 2024 |
Contemporaneous coverage described the core proposition as ad-free YouTube videos, offline video downloads and ad-free access to the YouTube Music catalog. YouTube’s own announcement also highlighted resuming videos where a viewer left off, enhanced 1080p HD quality, YouTube Music offline listening, background play and the Music Samples tab. Benefits and prices can vary by region and may change over time.

Who gained the most from the update?
Strongest case for Premium
- People who watch YouTube frequently on a phone.
- Shorts viewers who want picture-in-picture multitasking.
- Viewers who regularly need offline video or background play.
- People for whom YouTube Music could replace another music subscription.
- U.S. Android subscribers interested in trying Jump Ahead or the Conversational AI test.
Weaker case for Premium
- Desktop-only viewers who do not value an experimental layout.
- People who rarely watch Shorts or rarely use YouTube on mobile.
- Users outside the stated rollout regions or on unsupported platforms.
- Anyone considering subscription solely for an experiment that may end.
- Subscribers who already prefer a separate music service and do not need YouTube Music.
Common problems and sensible checks
A feature does not appear
Confirm the active Google account and Premium status, update the YouTube app, and check the feature’s country and device limits. Visit youtube.com/new for experiments, disable another test if YouTube blocks multiple experiments, then restart the app or sign out and back in. Gradual rollout, a closed test, selected-video eligibility or an expired experiment can all explain the absence.
Jump Ahead skips useful context
The tool seeks likely high-interest moments rather than preserving every transition. Scrub backward when an edit removes an introduction, qualification or explanation you need.
Smart Downloads consumes storage or data
Check free device storage, mobile-data permissions and download-quality settings. Remove unwanted downloads or pause automatic downloading when necessary; the 2024 announcement did not define a universal quota.
Conversational AI is missing
The experiment was limited to U.S. Android Premium users and select videos. It was not announced as a general YouTube assistant.

What was not announced
- No new Premium plan lineup was launched in the June 27 announcement.
- No confirmed prices, names, launch dates or eligibility rules were given for future plans.
- No benefit-sharing model, household policy or extra-member system was specified.
- The experiments were not guaranteed permanent Premium benefits.
- The stated platform and country limits did not establish universal availability.
YouTube’s announcement also cited more than 100 million YouTube Music and Premium subscribers worldwide earlier in 2024. That was a dated milestone, not a current subscriber count.
Sources and dated context
The feature list and rollout qualifications come from YouTube’s June 27, 2024 announcement. YouTube’s community discussion about possible plan expansion is available at support.google.com/youtube/thread/282274414?hl=en. The U.S. price figures and contemporaneous plan reporting were published by The Verge; related coverage appeared at Thurrott.
The Bottom Line
YouTube’s June 27, 2024 update added Jump Ahead and Android Shorts picture-in-picture, while offering three limited experiments. “More plan options” was a signal of future exploration—not a confirmed plan launch—so subscription decisions should rely on benefits available to your account today, not speculative sharing or pricing.
