Netflix does not set a general limit on the number of devices that can use your account, but it does limit how many devices may store downloads. In the United States, Netflix’s current Help Center says ad-supported plans allow downloads on two devices. Ad-free plans allow more according to the plan; Netflix shows your exact allowance under Account → Devices → Mobile download devices.
That download limit is separate from simultaneous streaming, downloaded-title capacity, Netflix Household checks, and the number of devices signed in to your account.

The limits at a glance
| What is limited? | Current Netflix answer |
|---|---|
| Devices used with the account | Netflix says it does not impose a general device-count limit: Netflix Help Center |
| Simultaneous viewing | One to four screens, depending on the membership plan |
| Download devices on an ad-supported plan | Two devices, according to Netflix’s current documentation: Netflix Help Center |
| Monthly downloads on each ad-supported download device | 15 total downloads per calendar month; the counter resets on the first day of the next month |
| Active downloads on an ad-free plan | Up to 100 titles per permitted device, subject to the plan’s download-device allowance: Netflix Help Center |
These figures come from Netflix’s English-language Help Center and are primarily applicable to U.S. customers as of August 18, 2026. Plan features and availability can vary by country and can change, so your account page is the final authority.
Download devices are not streaming devices
You can sign in on a television, laptop, phone, tablet, game console and other supported hardware without treating each one as a download device. Netflix uses separate controls for different activities:
#1 Best Overall
- Unlimited movies, TV shows, and more. Watch anywhere. Cancel anytime.
- Give the gift of entertainment so your friends and family can stream unlimited films and Netflix original series. Whether your loved one already has a Netflix account or they will be creating a new account, they can use a Netflix gift card toward their membership.
- No credit card is required to redeem a gift code.
- Codes are applied to your account as a gift balance
- Redemption: Online
- Account devices: devices signed in to or used with Netflix. Netflix currently says there is no general total-device cap.
- Simultaneous screens: how many people can watch at the same time. The plan determines this, currently from one to four screens.
- Download devices: eligible phones, tablets or Chromebooks that are authorized to store Netflix titles offline.
- Active downloaded titles: the number of titles stored on each authorized device.
For example, an account could be signed in on a TV, computer, phone and tablet while only the plan-defined number of mobile devices can hold downloads. Adding another streaming device does not create another download slot.
How many downloads can each plan support?
Ad-supported plans
Netflix currently documents two download devices for its ad-supported experience. Each of those devices has a limit of 15 total downloads per calendar month. This is a monthly download allowance, not a promise that only 15 titles may remain stored forever. The allowance resets on the first day of each calendar month.
Ad-free plans
Netflix says ad-free plans can support up to 100 active downloads per device, based on the number of download devices included with the plan. Netflix’s public help page does not provide one universal device table covering every ad-free plan and country. Check your own Mobile download devices page before assuming a particular number.
The 100-title figure means 100 active titles on one permitted device. It does not mean 100 devices can download Netflix.

Title-specific restrictions
Even with an available device slot and storage, a particular film or episode may have licensing restrictions. Netflix notes that some titles limit how many times they can be downloaded, how long a download remains available, or how many titles from the same studio or distributor can be downloaded at once.
How to check your account’s download-device limit
Netflix’s account-management page shows which devices currently have download authorization and lets you remove old ones.
In the Netflix app on Android, iPhone or iPad
- Open Netflix.
- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Account.
- Under Devices, select Mobile download devices.
The page lists the devices associated with downloads and the allowance that applies to your account.
In a web browser
- Open Netflix’s Manage Download Devices page.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Review the listed devices and remove any that are no longer needed.
How to remove a device when Netflix says there are too many
If Netflix displays “You have downloads on too many devices,” use account management rather than relying only on uninstalling the app.

Remove it from the account
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name, then Account.
- Choose Devices → Mobile download devices.
- Tap Remove device beside the old phone, tablet or Chromebook.
You can do the same from the browser-based Manage Download Devices page. Removing a device removes its download authorization and associated downloads from Netflix’s account management; it is especially useful when the device was lost, sold, replaced or is no longer accessible. Netflix does not describe this as remotely wiping the entire physical device.
Delete downloads on a device you still have
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix.
- Open App Settings.
- Under Downloads, select Delete All Downloads.
- Confirm the deletion.
Deleting completed downloads is the least disruptive option when you still use the device and want to keep it authorized. If you deleted the Netflix app but the account still reports too many download devices, remove the device through Account → Devices → Mobile download devices.
Which devices support Netflix downloads?
Netflix documents downloads on these categories:
- Android phones and tablets
- iPhone and iPad
- Amazon Fire tablets
- Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store
The latest Netflix app is required, and older operating systems may not support downloads. Netflix’s current iPhone and iPad guidance says the latest app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later; downloads are supported on iOS or iPadOS 12 or later, while the ad-supported experience requires iOS or iPadOS 16 or later. These requirements are app-version-sensitive.
Netflix supports streaming on many smart TVs, consoles, streaming players and computers, but that does not mean those devices can store offline downloads. A Windows app or browser can be used for streaming; Netflix’s Windows guidance is not proof that Windows supports offline downloads.

Why a Netflix title will not download
Free storage is only one requirement. Check these possible causes:
- Download-device limit reached: another authorized phone or tablet may already occupy the plan’s allowance.
- Ad-supported monthly quota reached: the 15-download-per-device calendar-month allowance may be exhausted.
- Title unavailable for download: licensing means some films and shows cannot be downloaded at all.
- Title-specific licensing cap: a title may have a limit on the number of downloads or an annual re-download restriction.
- Same-agreement limit: Netflix’s NQL.22005 guidance explains that “too many downloaded videos” can refer to simultaneous downloads covered by the same licensing agreement, not your account-wide capacity.
- Unsupported app or operating system: update Netflix and verify that the device meets the current requirements.
- Insufficient storage: delete finished downloads or free space on the device.
If Netflix says a title can be downloaded only one more time, that is a title-specific licensing warning. The restriction can last up to a year; streaming the title online may remain the immediate alternative. See Netflix’s explanation at this Help Center page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Netflix downloads expire?
Yes. A download is a temporary offline license, not a permanent video file. Netflix says downloaded titles expire after a period of time, and some titles have limits on how many times they can be downloaded in a year. An expired title may require an internet connection for renewal or may no longer be available.
The device must remain signed in to the Netflix account to access downloads offline. Download expiry and licensing rules apply even when the device has plenty of free storage and the plan still has an available download slot.

Netflix downloads and account sharing
A download slot is not the same thing as permission for another household member. Netflix can allow sign-in on a new device while still applying Netflix Household checks, extra-member rules or travel verification. A device away from the household may trigger a verification flow or temporary travel code, as described in Netflix’s account guidance.
Keep these systems separate:
- Download-device allowance
- Simultaneous-streaming allowance
- Netflix Household verification
- Extra-member eligibility
- Account security and device management
Is upgrading your plan the right fix?
An ad-free plan may make sense if you need downloads on more than two devices, repeatedly reach the ad-supported monthly allowance, want up to 100 active downloads per permitted device, need more simultaneous screens, or want an ad-free experience. Netflix’s official plan-change path is netflix.com/changeplan; available plans and prices depend on your country and account.
Upgrading will not solve a title that is unavailable for download, an annual title cap, unsupported hardware, inadequate storage, a Household verification problem or a licensing-agreement error. In those cases, removing an old download device, deleting completed titles, updating the app, freeing storage or streaming online may solve the problem without changing plans.
Bottom line
For U.S. Netflix customers, the current practical answer is: ad-supported plans can download on two devices; ad-free plans allow more according to the plan, with the exact number shown in Account → Devices → Mobile download devices. Netflix does not impose a general cap on devices used for streaming, and simultaneous viewing remains a separate one-to-four-screen plan limit. When you reach the download-device limit, remove an old device through Netflix’s account page rather than assuming that deleting the app will free the slot.
