Sportflix did not successfully launch in Brazil. The company announced an August 30, 2017 debut for a sports-streaming service it marketed as the “Netflix of sports,” but it did not go live as promised. Broadcasters disputed its claims to sports rights, and Mexico’s intellectual-property authority opened administrative proceedings over content advertised on the site.
What Sportflix promised
Sportflix was a proposed streaming venture associated with executive Matías Said. Its “Netflix of sports” label was a marketing comparison, not an affiliation with Netflix. Unlike Netflix’s familiar on-demand model, Sportflix emphasized live sports retransmission. Said described a plan to take signals from television channels, but that description did not establish that Sportflix had permission to redistribute those channels or their events.
The announced rollout included Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, the United States, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and England. Sportflix promoted coverage spanning football, basketball, tennis, golf, hockey, motorsports, American football and combat sports, with major events such as the Olympics and World Cup among its advertised ambitions. These were planned offerings, not a verified Brazilian catalog. Contemporary descriptions of the offer appear in TecMundo and Meio & Mensagem.
Reports listed three proposed monthly tiers, priced in US dollars, with different screen limits and features:

These were announced plan details, not evidence that Brazilian subscribers paid those prices or received the advertised service. The launch coverage also described planned access through smart TVs, Android, iOS and web browsers.
Why the rights claims came under pressure
Live sports are not a single, interchangeable library. Rights are commonly divided by competition, country, season, platform and type of use—such as television broadcast, internet streaming, live coverage or replay. A service that wants to retransmit a channel’s signal needs appropriate authorization; advertising an event does not create that authorization. The broad, multi-country promise therefore depended on a large set of agreements that would need to be secured and verified.

Fox Sports Latin America said it had no relationship or negotiations with Sportflix concerning sports rights and said many of its properties were exclusive in the region. Its statement is reported by Marketing Registrado; NaTelinha also covered the dispute.
Grupo Globo likewise said it had not negotiated with Sportflix or authorized it to offer events for which Globo held Brazilian broadcast and internet rights. The rights it identified included the Campeonato Brasileiro, the FIFA World Cup, the French Championship and the Olympic Games, according to Diário de Pernambuco. These denials were significant challenges to the advertised catalog; they were not, by themselves, court rulings that Sportflix had committed piracy.

What happened on the planned launch date
Sportflix’s announced date was August 30, 2017. Contemporary Brazilian reporting said the service did not start then. By August 31, its website reportedly said the launch had been postponed, with no replacement date. The company attributed the delay to processes intended to ensure transmission quality, while industry coverage pointed to the unresolved question of whether it had the rights to carry the advertised events. Máquina do Esporte reported the postponement.
Registration was not equivalent to an operating subscription. Nor did a sign-up page demonstrate that live events were available or that their rights had been cleared. Early September coverage described Sportflix as not having launched in Latin America; NaTelinha reported that the company continued to solicit registrations despite the lack of a working launch.

What Mexico’s IMPI did—and did not—decide
On August 30, 2017, Mexico’s Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI) issued an official statement about Sportflix.net. It said it had received a piracy complaint and reviewed the site, which advertised programming described as exclusive content belonging to Televisa, TV Azteca, Olympic programming, national and international football, Fox Sports, ESPN, TNT and Univision.
The IMPI said the published content could potentially violate copyright and industrial-property rules, and that it initiated administrative infringement proceedings and provisional measures. Its statement also described an obstructed inspection attempt: a planned temporary three-day closure could not be completed because the premises were locked and unattended. This was action by a Mexican authority concerning the site, not a Brazilian court judgment. The official statement describes potential infringement and administrative measures; it should not be read as a final criminal conviction or definitive judicial finding of liability.
Does a later Sportflix app listing change the story?
An iOS listing under the Sportflix name appeared in Brazil in 2019, but a listing alone does not establish that the promised 2017 live-sports service ever operated with the advertised rights. The listing described a different mix of content, including sports series, films, cartoons and family programming. It is evidence of a later app bearing the name, not proof that Brazilian viewers received the original all-sports streaming offer. See the Brazilian App Store listing.

- Look for a specific distribution agreement, rather than relying only on a platform’s list of events or channels.
