If YouTube will not open, freezes, or will not play videos on your Samsung TV, start by cold-booting the TV. Then check whether other apps and devices can get online before updating or reinstalling YouTube. Leave Reset Smart Hub and a full factory reset until later: they can sign you out or erase settings.
Find the symptom that matches your problem

1. Cold-boot the Samsung TV
A brief press of the remote’s Power button usually puts the TV in standby. A cold boot fully restarts it and can clear temporary app-state problems. Samsung says the remote method takes about five seconds on most models; behavior varies by model.
- Turn on the TV.
- Press and hold the remote’s Power button.
- Keep holding it while the TV turns off and back on, then open YouTube.
If you do not have the remote, unplug the TV from the wall outlet or surge protector, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on. These are Samsung’s current U.S. cold-boot instructions (Samsung app troubleshooting; Samsung TV glitches).
If YouTube still fails, note whether the TV itself is slow or other apps are also affected. That distinction helps separate an app problem from a TV or network problem.

2. Check whether the problem is YouTube, the TV, or the internet
Before resetting settings, make a few quick comparisons:
- Open another streaming app on the TV.
- On a phone or computer connected to the same home network, try YouTube.
- Try several YouTube videos, not just one.
- If practical, connect the TV temporarily to a phone hotspot. This can use mobile data, so do not leave it streaming unintentionally.
Samsung recommends checking other devices and using the TV’s network status test when diagnosing connection trouble (Samsung network troubleshooting).
- Only YouTube fails on the TV: Focus on the app, TV software, sign-in, or device compatibility.
- Several TV apps fail, but other devices work: Check the TV’s network connection and software.
- YouTube fails on several devices on the home network: Investigate the router, internet service, or a broader service problem. One TV’s failure alone does not establish that YouTube is down.
- The TV works on a hotspot: The home router, Wi-Fi coverage, DNS, filtering, or ISP connection is more likely than the TV itself.
- No TV apps work: Start with network troubleshooting rather than repeatedly reinstalling YouTube.
Samsung’s common network-test paths are All Settings → Connection → Network → Network Status or Settings → General → Network → Network Status. The menu varies by model and year.
3. Update the TV software and check YouTube
Available TV software updates can address compatibility and app problems. On many Samsung TVs, the path is Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. Newer menus may add All Settings before Support. Let the TV finish installing and restart before testing YouTube. Samsung TVs generally update installed apps automatically, but available controls and labels vary. YouTube also recommends checking app and device updates when TV playback fails (YouTube video-error troubleshooting).

If the TV cannot update over the internet
Use Samsung’s Download Center to find firmware for the TV’s exact model. Follow Samsung’s model-specific USB instructions: download the correct firmware, extract its files to the root of a USB flash drive, insert the drive, then choose Settings/Menu → Support → Software Update → Update Now. Do not turn off the TV during installation. Do not use firmware intended for a different model. See Samsung’s software-update instructions.
4. Reinstall YouTube
A fresh installation can help if YouTube’s local app installation is damaged. Have your Google/YouTube sign-in details ready first: deleting an app can sign you out.
- Press Home and select Apps.
- Select the Settings gear, usually near the upper-right corner.
- Highlight YouTube and select Delete.
- If Delete is unavailable or grayed out, choose Reinstall instead.
- Return to Apps, search for YouTube, and select Install if offered.
- Open the app and sign in again if asked.
Some TVs treat YouTube as a built-in or recommended app, so Reinstall may replace Delete. Samsung and YouTube both recommend reinstalling an app as a troubleshooting step (Samsung app troubleshooting; YouTube video-error troubleshooting).
5. Reset the TV’s network or try another connection
A TV can show as connected to Wi-Fi while still having a routing, signal, authentication, or internet-access problem.
Reset the network settings
Look for All Settings → Connection → Network → Reset Network. Some models use Settings → General → Network → Reset Network. Reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward and test YouTube. This resets the TV’s network configuration, so you will need the Wi-Fi password.

Restart the modem and router
- Turn off the TV.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and allow it to come online.
- Reconnect the router, then reconnect or restart the TV.
- Test YouTube again.
YouTube recommends power-cycling the device and router for streaming problems (YouTube video-error troubleshooting).
Compare Wi-Fi with a hotspot or Ethernet
A temporary phone hotspot can show whether the home network is involved: if YouTube works there, check the router, Wi-Fi coverage, ISP, DNS, or network filtering. If the TV supports Ethernet, a temporary wired connection is another way to test whether weak or unstable Wi-Fi is the issue. Neither connection test guarantees a fix; both help identify where to look. Samsung also recommends trying another network when diagnosing TV connectivity (Samsung network troubleshooting).
6. Change DNS only as a targeted test
DNS helps the TV find internet services. Changing it may help if the network’s DNS resolution is failing, but it will not repair a damaged app installation or resolve a YouTube outage. Try this only after checking that the TV is connected to the network.
- Open All Settings → Connection → Network → Network Status.
- Select IP Settings, then DNS Setting.
- Choose Enter Manually.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 and save.
Samsung’s U.S. network guidance documents this DNS address; menu names vary by model (Samsung network troubleshooting). If the change does not help, restore the previous DNS setting. It is not a universal speed boost.
7. Reset Smart Hub, then decide whether to escalate
Warning: Resetting Smart Hub signs you out of your Samsung account and third-party apps. Before doing it, make sure you have your Samsung, Google, and streaming-service credentials, Wi-Fi password, and any parental-control PINs. You may need to set up or download apps again.

The Smart Hub path differs by model year:
- 2018 and earlier models: Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Reset Smart Hub.
- 2019 and later models: Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Reset Smart Hub.
The default Samsung TV PIN is commonly 0000, unless it has been changed. If it was changed and you do not know it, use Samsung’s account or support recovery options rather than trying to bypass it. After the reset, complete setup, reconnect to the internet, install YouTube if needed, and test it before restoring other apps. See Samsung app troubleshooting.

A full TV reset affects more than Smart Hub and erases broader settings. Use it only after the network, software, reinstall, and Smart Hub steps have failed. The location is generally All Settings → General or General & Privacy → Reset, but the menu differs across models. Samsung describes model-dependent reset and network troubleshooting at Samsung network troubleshooting.
Choose the right support route
- Only YouTube fails after reinstall while other apps work: Contact YouTube/app support.
- Several apps fail after a Smart Hub reset, firmware will not update, or Network Status indicates a TV problem: Contact Samsung support.
- The TV works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi: Contact the ISP or router manufacturer if rebooting and checking coverage do not resolve it.
- The TV cannot see any Wi-Fi networks: Check the router and test another device; if the TV still detects none, contact Samsung.
- YouTube no longer appears or cannot be installed: Check current app availability for the TV model and region. Google notes availability varies by device and location (YouTube app availability and TV use; Install YouTube on a smart TV). If the TV is no longer supported, an external streaming device may be more practical than repeated resets.
When contacting support, have the TV model, firmware version, exact error, whether other apps work, whether YouTube works on another device, and the results of any hotspot test ready.

Only one video fails
Try other videos and channels. If the rest play normally, the TV installation may be fine; the individual video could be unavailable, restricted, region-limited, or temporarily affected on the content side.
YouTube plays sound but shows no picture
Try another video and another app, then cold-boot the TV, check for software updates, and reinstall YouTube if the issue remains. If multiple video apps have the same picture problem, investigate the TV display or connected equipment rather than treating it as a YouTube-only fault.

Sign-in or account trouble
Test YouTube signed out, if possible, or with another account. If playback works without the account, the issue may involve sign-in, account settings, parental controls, or local credentials. Reinstalling can require signing in again.
Casting from a phone does not find the TV
Casting is separate from repairing the built-in app. Check that the phone and TV are on the same network and that YouTube is current. Google’s TV app help covers linking and using a phone or tablet with YouTube on a TV: Explore the YouTube app on your TV.
YouTube TV has an error
YouTube TV is a separate paid live-TV service, not the ordinary YouTube video app. Its location, home-area, playback-area, and protected-content checks require service-specific troubleshooting. Follow YouTube TV’s streaming troubleshooting rather than assuming ordinary YouTube fixes address a location error.
Do Samsung TVs have a “clear cache” setting for YouTube?
Do not apply Android TV’s app-cache menu instructions to a Samsung TV running Samsung’s TV software. Google’s cache instructions are for Android TV devices; Samsung’s app troubleshooting sequence instead uses cold booting, software updates, deleting or reinstalling the app, and resetting Smart Hub (Android TV playback help; Samsung app troubleshooting).
What if the TV is too old for YouTube?
YouTube is available on many smart TVs, but support depends on the device, software, and location. Search for YouTube in the TV’s Apps area and check whether the TV can still receive firmware updates. Google provides current app availability and installation guidance at YouTube app availability and YouTube installation help. If the app is unavailable for the TV, repeated resets will not restore support; an external streaming device is an alternative to consider.
