On a MacBook, Apple TV purchases and eligible Apple TV content can be downloaded in the Apple TV app, and Prime Video supports downloads through its macOS app for eligible titles. Netflix’s current download-device guidance does not document a native macOS download workflow, and Disney+ excludes computers. For those services, use an iPhone or iPad for offline viewing. These are current service policies, not guarantees for every title, account, plan, or region.
What offline downloads actually are
A streaming download is usually an encrypted, app-controlled copy, not a regular MP4 file you can freely move between devices. You play it inside the service’s authorized app. Subscription downloads may expire, require the account to remain eligible, or need periodic online verification. A title can also disappear if its license ends or it is removed from the catalog.
Apple distinguishes purchased media from subscription and channel content. Apple says purchased media can be downloaded to a Mac for offline access, but it remains tied to Apple’s account and DRM ecosystem; store availability and future redownload access can vary by country or region. See Apple’s guidance on downloading purchased media.
Before you start
- Use the official app. For Mac downloads, use the Apple TV or Prime Video app rather than assuming that browser streaming includes offline playback.
- Check eligibility. Sign in to the right account and profile, confirm any required subscription or purchase, and look for a Download button on the specific title.
- Make room. Check available storage before downloading; a download may need temporary working space as well as its final storage.
- Use Wi-Fi and power. Download over a stable connection and keep the Mac awake and plugged in if the download is large.
- Test before leaving. Wait for the download to finish, then briefly disconnect from the internet and start playback in the app. Do this especially for subscription titles that may require periodic verification.
Download an Apple-purchased movie on a MacBook
- Open the Apple TV app.
- Select Library, then choose Movies or TV Shows.
- If you use Family Sharing, select the relevant family member or shared library when available.
- Move the pointer over the movie or show and click Download.
- Wait for the download to complete, then disconnect from the internet and play it from the Apple TV app.
Apple documents this Mac path as Apple TV app → Library → Movies or TV Shows → hover over a title → Download. The button and download rights depend on what the listing represents: an Apple purchase, Apple TV subscription title, rental, channel, or third-party service. Seeing a title in the Apple TV app does not mean Apple controls every download right. For eligible subscription or channel content, availability can vary by title, subscription, and region. See Apple’s Mac download instructions.

Download a Prime Video movie on a MacBook
- Install or open the official Prime Video app for macOS.
- Sign in to the Amazon account associated with the subscription or title.
- Find the movie or show and open its detail page.
- Select Download if the option appears. For a series, select an episode or use the full-season option if the app offers it.
- Open the app’s Downloads area and wait for the download to finish.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and test playback in Prime Video.
Amazon’s help documentation lists the Prime Video macOS app as a supported download platform and describes downloading TV seasons as a group. The option is not universal: titles, account eligibility, rentals, purchases, subscriptions, and add-on channels can have different restrictions. Downloads are meant to play in the app, not to export as ordinary video files. Consult Amazon’s Prime Video download help for current details.
Can you download Netflix movies to a MacBook?
Netflix’s current official guidance lists download support for certain device categories, but does not document a native macOS download workflow. Streaming Netflix in a Mac browser is not the same as downloading a title for offline playback. Netflix also says some titles cannot be downloaded even on supported devices; if a title has no Download icon there, its download availability is restricted. See Netflix’s supported download devices and its download eligibility guidance.

If you need Netflix offline, download the title in the official Netflix app on an iPhone or iPad, then test it while disconnected. If a Windows device is your alternative, check Netflix’s current requirements for that specific operating system rather than assuming every Windows PC supports downloads.
Avoid unofficial “Netflix for Mac” apps, download utilities, and screen-recording workarounds. They are not equivalent to Netflix’s authorized offline feature, may fail because of DRM, can lose quality, subtitles, or audio tracks, and may create legal or account-policy risks.

Can you download Disney+ movies to a MacBook?
Disney+ currently says downloads are available on supported mobile devices, including iPhone and iPad, but not on computers, including Mac computers. Its guidance also excludes TV-connected devices and Windows 10 and Windows 11 tablets. Download eligibility depends on the supported device, title, and plan; Disney+ identifies certain Premium plans or bundles as eligible. See Disney+ download requirements.
- Install the Disney+ app on an iPhone or iPad and sign in.
- Find the movie and tap its Download icon.
- Wait for it to finish and confirm it appears in the app’s Downloads section.
- Test playback with the device offline.
Disney+ says downloaded content generally remains available offline for up to 30 days, unless the title expires sooner, and may require periodic reconnection. A plan change or cancellation can affect access. Check Disney+ download troubleshooting and its offline-download guidance for current conditions. An iPhone or iPad download is not a transferable video file for your Mac.

Which services support MacBook downloads?
This is a current policy snapshot; streaming services can change app support and licensing rules. “Yes” means a supported route exists, not that every title or account qualifies.
| Service or content | Direct MacBook download? | Official route | Practical advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple-purchased media | Yes | Apple TV app → Library → title → Download | Suitable for purchased Apple media; access remains account- and DRM-controlled. |
| Apple TV subscription content | Title and subscription dependent | Apple TV app | Check for Download on the specific title and test playback offline. |
| Prime Video | Yes, through the macOS app for eligible titles | Prime Video app → title → Download | Use the official app; not every title or account qualifies. |
| Netflix | No native macOS download workflow documented in current guidance | Official app on supported devices such as iPhone or iPad | Download on a supported mobile device instead. |
| Disney+ | No; computers are excluded | Official app on supported mobile devices | Use an eligible iPhone or iPad plan and title. |
| Hulu, including select Hulu content accessed through Disney+ | Device, app, plan, and title dependent; a direct Mac route is not established here | Hulu app on supported devices | Confirm eligibility in the relevant app; do not assume Mac downloads. |
Choose the route that fits your trip
- Choose Apple TV for Apple purchases if you want a Mac-native route for a movie you bought through Apple and expect to watch repeatedly. It is not unrestricted file ownership, and availability can vary by region.
- Choose Prime Video for a subscription-based Mac option when the title has a Download button in the macOS app. Content remains governed by the service and its rights.
- Use an iPhone or iPad for Netflix, Disney+, and other mobile-first download services when Mac downloads are unavailable. The trade-off is a smaller screen and separate device storage.
- Consider buying instead of subscribing if a title is available through Apple and you want a more durable local-access path. A purchase does not guarantee unrestricted ownership or perpetual store access; Apple advises downloading purchased media to a compatible device.
Hulu download eligibility depends on the app, device, plan, and title. Disney’s help page says select Hulu content may be downloadable through Hulu for eligible subscribers, while Disney+ downloads are not supported on computers. Check the option in the app you will actually use rather than treating Apple TV or Disney+ listings as a guarantee of Mac download rights.

Troubleshoot common download problems
The Download button is missing
- The service may not support Mac downloads, as is currently the case for Netflix’s documented macOS workflow and Disney+ computer downloads.
- The title may not be licensed for download, or its rental, purchase, add-on-channel, or regional terms may differ.
- Your account plan or profile may not qualify, or you may be signed into the wrong account.
- You may be viewing the title in a browser instead of the official app, or the app may need an update.
For Netflix, the absence of a Download icon can mean the title is not downloadable. Treat a missing button as a service or title restriction, not a reason to install a random downloader.
The download stalls or fails
- Confirm the Mac has enough free storage.
- Switch to a stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Keep the app open and prevent the Mac from sleeping during the download.
- Pause and resume the download, then quit and reopen the app.
- Update the app and, if needed, restart the Mac.
- If a partial download appears corrupted, delete it and try again.
- Use a lower download quality if the app offers quality controls.
Disney’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking storage, relaunching or restarting the app or device, updating, and deleting and redownloading a title. See Disney+ troubleshooting.
The download completed, but playback fails offline
- Verify that the download is complete and open the title from the app’s Downloads or Library area.
- Check that the correct account is signed in and the subscription or purchase remains eligible.
- Reconnect briefly: some subscription downloads require periodic online verification, and licenses or catalog availability can expire.
- Check that the Mac’s date and time are correct and that a VPN, network setting, or parental control is not interfering with the app’s authorization.
Storage seems available, but the app still cannot download
Check Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage, then remove large local files if space is tight. Menu names can vary by macOS release. The app may need temporary working space, have a restricted download location, or be dealing with a corrupted partial file; an account or device download limit or incompatible app version may also be involved. An external SSD is not a universal fix: some services do not permit protected downloads to removable storage, and service-controlled downloads may only work on the original Mac and account.
Quick Recap
Pre-trip checklist
- Download over Wi-Fi and wait until every title is complete.
- Open each movie once with Wi-Fi disabled to confirm it plays.
- Check subtitles and audio options while online, where available.
- Make sure the Mac or mobile device has enough storage and battery for the trip.
- Reconnect to subscription apps shortly before departure if their downloads require periodic verification.
- Save at least one backup title if the trip depends on having something to watch.
What not to do
- Do not treat browser streaming as proof that a Mac can download the same title.
- Do not install unknown streaming apps or browser extensions that promise to make restricted services downloadable.
- Do not rip streams, bypass DRM, or share service-controlled downloads. These are not supported offline-viewing methods and may violate service terms or applicable law.
- Do not assume a download is permanent simply because it is stored locally; service licensing, account status, and verification rules still apply.
