If Crunchyroll works in another browser or on another device, focus on Chrome’s extensions, site data, permissions, or protected-content settings. If it fails everywhere, check the network, account, title, or Crunchyroll Support. These steps are for desktop Chrome; menu names may vary by version.
Start with the symptom
“Not working” can mean the site will not open, sign-in loops, a player stays black or spins, video buffers, Chrome crashes, or a DRM error appears. Test the same episode as you troubleshoot: if only one title fails, try another before changing Chrome settings.

1. Check whether the problem is limited to Chrome
Try the same title in another browser or on a different device. Also test a different title in Chrome. Crunchyroll recommends trying another browser or device when troubleshooting loading problems (Crunchyroll’s loading guidance).
- If the same episode works elsewhere, concentrate on Chrome, its profile, extensions, or permissions.
- If every title fails on every device, investigate your network, account, or the service rather than repeatedly changing Chrome settings.
- If only one episode fails, avoid resetting the browser; the issue may be specific to that title or playback session.
Do not assume there is an outage based on one failed browser. Compare devices and networks, and consult Crunchyroll Support if the problem persists.

2. Reload the page and restart Chrome
Reload the Crunchyroll tab once. If that does not help, close Chrome completely, reopen it, sign in if needed, and retry the same episode. A full restart can clear a temporary browser or player glitch without deleting settings or data.
3. Test Crunchyroll in Incognito
- In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu) → New Incognito Window.
- Open Crunchyroll, sign in if necessary, and try the same episode.
If it works in Incognito, an extension or stored site data in your regular profile is a likely cause; proceed to the next two fixes. Incognito is not a guaranteed clean-room test: extensions you have allowed in Incognito can still run. Google recommends Incognito as a way to investigate video and loading problems (Chrome video troubleshooting).
4. Temporarily disable extensions, VPNs, and blockers
Ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, VPN and proxy extensions, downloaders, video enhancers, and security add-ons can interfere with site loading or playback. Crunchyroll specifically notes that ad blockers and other add-ons may affect browser video playback (Crunchyroll browser playback guidance).

- Open More → Extensions → Manage extensions.
- Temporarily switch off extensions, especially blockers, privacy tools, VPNs, downloaders, and video-enhancement tools.
- Reload Crunchyroll and try the episode again.
- If playback returns, turn extensions back on one at a time, testing after each, to identify the conflict.
Use this as a short diagnostic test, not a reason to leave security protection disabled. If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect it temporarily to test; that does not mean every VPN causes playback problems.
5. Clear Crunchyroll’s stored site data
Start with site-specific data so you do not unnecessarily remove cookies and preferences for other websites. On Crunchyroll, select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar and open Cookies and site data or Site settings; remove the stored data for Crunchyroll, then reload and sign in again. The exact labels can vary between Chrome versions.
If you cannot find the site-specific control, use Chrome’s broader option: More → Delete browsing data. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, choose an appropriate time range, and delete the data. This broader option may sign you out of many sites and remove more preferences. 6. Check JavaScript and protected-content permissions
Allow JavaScript
JavaScript is needed for many interactive sites and media players. In Chrome, open More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript. If JavaScript is blocked for Crunchyroll, allow it there rather than changing a broader setting unnecessarily. Google provides this path in its video and media troubleshooting guidance.
Allow protected content
Streaming titles may require protected playback. Open More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Protected content IDs, and ensure Chrome is not set to block protected content. Google explains that blocking it can prevent media from playing (Chrome protected-content settings).
Do not install unofficial DRM or codec downloads, or change experimental flags copied from a forum. Crunchyroll’s DRM guidance emphasizes browser updates, protected content, and checking for interfering add-ons (Crunchyroll DRM troubleshooting).

7. Update Chrome and retry DRM playback
- Select More → Help → About Google Chrome.
- Let Chrome check for updates and install one if offered.
- Select Relaunch if prompted, then test the same episode.
Crunchyroll’s browser-help page lists Chrome 117 or later as supported; requirements can change, so check the current browser guidance rather than treating that minimum as permanent. For a DRM error, update Chrome, confirm protected content is allowed, and test with interfering extensions or a VPN temporarily disabled. Widevine is Chrome’s protected-media component, but the supported guidance here does not require manually changing experimental settings or downloading it separately.
8. Test another network, then contact support
If Chrome still fails, try another network—for example, mobile data instead of Wi-Fi—and disconnect a VPN or proxy temporarily. Restart your modem and router. On hotel, school, work, or public Wi-Fi, check whether a sign-in page, firewall, filter, or bandwidth restriction is involved. Google lists network, firewall or antivirus, extensions, and website availability among possible causes of Chrome connection problems (Chrome connection and loading guidance).
Crunchyroll also mentions trying another DNS, including Google Public DNS, as a possible network troubleshooting step (browser playback guidance). Treat this as a later experiment: DNS will not resolve an account issue, extension conflict, or protected-content setting. If the issue follows you across browsers, devices, or networks—or none of these steps works—contact Crunchyroll Support.

If Chrome crashes or shows “Aw, Snap!”
Close unused tabs and applications, restart Chrome, and test Crunchyroll in another browser. If only Chrome crashes, investigate its extensions or profile. For a black screen or rendering problem, hardware acceleration may be worth testing as a targeted step; it is not a universal streaming fix. Google’s Chrome crash and performance guidance covers memory, other browsers, and hardware acceleration.
What to send Crunchyroll Support
Include the title and episode, the exact error text or code, a screenshot, your Chrome version and operating system, and whether the same episode worked in Incognito, another browser, another device, or another network. This information helps distinguish a browser-specific failure from an account, title, network, or service problem. Use the official support process for any account details it requests.
