To give someone their own Premium access, switch to Premium Duo or Premium Family and invite their separate Spotify account. The plan manager pays the full plan charge, and members must live at the same address.

| Situation | Best fit | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Only one person needs Premium | Premium Individual | It has no additional member slot. |
| Two people need separate accounts | Premium Duo | Both must live with the plan manager. |
| More household members, or a parent setting up a child account | Premium Family | Members must meet the household and address rules; check Spotify’s current U.S. plan page for the available member limit and features. |
| People live at different addresses | Separate subscriptions or another plan for which each person is eligible | Duo and Family require members to live with the manager. |

Duo and Family invitations add people to a plan; they do not create profiles under one shared login. Each member signs in to their own Spotify account. Use the account the invited person wants to keep using, rather than sharing the manager’s password. Spotify’s Duo overview explains the two-person plan and its household requirement.
Add someone to an existing Premium Duo plan
- Sign in to the plan manager’s Spotify account page and open the Duo plan page.
- Select Manage Members, then choose the invitation option and send the link to the person joining.
- The invitee opens the link, selects Accept invite, and signs in to the account they want on the plan. If the wrong account appears, they can choose Change account.
- The invitee enters and confirms the household’s full address, then completes enrollment.
If the manager and invitee share a device, the manager should sign out before the invitee opens the link. Spotify’s Duo invitation instructions provide the account-page steps.

Switch from Individual to Duo first
Sign in to the account that pays for Premium, open its plan-management area, review the plans available to that account, and select Duo if offered. Confirm the address and payment details, then complete the change and invite the second member from the Duo management page. The precise labels and options can depend on how the subscription is billed.
Spotify says an existing Premium subscriber generally does not need to cancel before switching, but the billing date or treatment of remaining Premium time can change. Review the confirmation details for the account before completing the change; Spotify’s Duo payment guidance says an invitee’s remaining Premium time may be forfeited when they join.

Add someone to Premium Family
If you manage Family, open the Spotify account page, go to the Family plan page, and select Manage members. Choose an available invitation option or copy the invitation link and send it to the new member. They sign in to their own account (or create one), confirm the household address, and finish enrollment. Spotify’s Family member instructions cover invitations and member changes.
If the plan is full
In Manage members, select the person to remove and use the removal control to free a place. If the page offers Remove & invite, follow that confirmation flow; otherwise remove the member and send a new invitation from the available member controls. The exact wording may vary by account or device. Removing a member does not transfer plan management to that person.

Address checks and invitation problems
For both Duo and Family, the manager and members must live at the same address. The invitee must provide the full household address when joining; it must be in the same country as the payment method’s country. Spotify may ask for verification at enrollment, after an address change, or when it cannot confirm the information. Address verification is not permission to use an address where the member does not live.
- Invite opens the wrong account: Sign out of the manager’s account, open the invitation in a private or incognito browser window, sign in to the intended member account, and reopen the link. The manager can send a fresh invitation if needed.
- Link appears expired: Try opening it in a private window. If it still fails, ask the manager to generate and send a new invitation.
- Address is not accepted: Check that it is the actual shared household address and is in the payment method’s country. Enter the complete address and use Spotify’s address search; if it does not appear, follow the address-selection guidance on the relevant Family verification or Duo verification page.
- Invitee is already a plan manager: A person who manages another Duo or Family plan may not be eligible to join as a member. Check Spotify’s member-invitation guidance for the account’s situation.
- No plan-change option appears: The subscription may be billed through a mobile carrier, internet provider, or other partner. Check the payment information on the account and manage the subscription through that provider if required. Spotify explains partner-billed subscriptions in its subscription cancellation and billing guidance.
Spotify’s stated verification policy allows a member who receives a failed-verification email seven days to respond. If verification fails or the deadline passes, Premium access may be removed. Spotify also says a member who fails verification may be unable to join another Duo or Family plan for 12 months from the failure date, though they may be able to rejoin the same plan. See the applicable Family or Duo policy for details.

Adding a child is a separate setup
A parent or legal guardian who manages Premium Family can create a child-oriented managed account through parental controls; it is not the standard adult invitation flow. Managed accounts include controls for explicit content, videos, Canvas, and specific artists or songs. Spotify warns that converting an existing member account to managed can remove some content and features and cancel active add-ons. Its managed-account instructions explain the reversal period and what happens if the change becomes permanent, including the data-deletion process.
Who pays, and what happens to an existing subscription?
The plan manager pays Spotify the full recurring plan amount whether or not every available place is occupied; members do not pay Spotify separately through the plan. See Spotify’s guidance for Family payments and Duo payments.

When an existing Premium subscriber changes plans or joins someone else’s plan, billing dates and remaining subscription time may be affected. Partner billing can have different controls and terms, so check the account’s payment details and the confirmation screen before proceeding. Current prices and plan limits are shown on Spotify’s U.S. Premium page.
Quick Recap
Other limits to know
- Leaving or replacing a member: A member leaving does not cancel the manager’s plan. The manager remains responsible for the charge and controls membership.
- Changing the Duo manager: Spotify says the Duo manager cannot be changed after the plan is created. Replacing a member is not a transfer of ownership.
- Add-ons: Availability and control can depend on plan, market, and account eligibility. Spotify says Family and Duo members may need to ask the manager to allocate an add-on, with its recurring cost billed through the manager. Converting an account to managed can cancel active add-ons. See Spotify’s add-on guidance.
