If Sling’s player is black in Microsoft Edge, first switch to another live channel, then test Sling in an InPrivate window. Those two checks quickly separate a channel or delivery problem from a fault in your usual Edge profile. Sling supports Edge 17 and newer and recommends using the latest version, but support does not rule out a temporary player, extension, network, or display issue. Sling’s Edge support guidance also points viewers to its general troubleshooting steps.
Identify what is actually black
Note whether the Sling webpage itself is blank, or whether the site and player controls load but the video area is black. Also check whether audio continues, whether the problem starts after changing channels or returning to a tab, and whether it happens only in full-screen mode or on an external display. These differences help narrow the next test; a black player is not by itself proof of an Edge, DRM, or Sling outage.
- One channel only: test another live channel before changing browser settings.
- Every channel in Edge: test the browser profile, extensions, and another browser or device.
- Black video with audio or controls: include extensions and the graphics or display path in your checks.
- Black only on a second screen: test the computer’s primary display with the external screen disconnected.
- Sling fails across devices: investigate the network and account, then contact Sling.
Sling says temporary bandwidth loss, a delivery problem, or video still loading after a channel change can cause a black screen. Its black-screen troubleshooting guide starts with changing channels and comparing devices and networks.
Try the fastest tests first
1. Change channels
- In Sling, switch to a different live channel and give the stream a moment to load.
- If that channel plays, return to the original channel once.
- If only the original channel remains black, note its name, your local market, the time and timezone, and whether audio plays. Test it on another device if convenient, then report the channel-specific failure to Sling rather than repeatedly changing Edge settings.
2. Refresh the player and restart Edge
Reload the Sling page. If the player remains black, close Edge completely, reopen it, and sign in again at watch.sling.com. Sling lists Edge among its supported browser options. A restart is a quick check for a stalled tab or session; it does not establish that the cause was the browser.

3. Check whether the connection is involved
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth activity while testing.
- On Wi-Fi, try moving closer to the router or connecting by Ethernet.
- If other streaming services also struggle, restart the router and test them again.
- For a comparison, try Sling on the same computer and Edge profile through another network, such as a phone hotspot. Mobile data charges or limits may apply.
Sling identifies a temporary bandwidth or delivery interruption as a possible cause and recommends checking the connection or trying another network. A black screen alone does not establish that your connection is too slow.
Check whether your Edge profile is the problem
Test in an InPrivate window
- Open the Edge menu (…) and select New InPrivate window.
- Sign in to Sling, open the same channel, and compare playback.
Microsoft explains how InPrivate browsing handles browsing data. If Sling works there but not in a normal window, suspect site data, a stale session, or an extension. InPrivate is not necessarily extension-free: an extension allowed to run in InPrivate can still affect playback.

Temporarily disable extensions
- Open the Edge menu (…) > Extensions > Manage extensions. You can also enter
edge://extensionsin the address bar. - Temporarily turn off extensions that filter or modify pages, such as ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, VPN extensions, video enhancers, and security tools.
- Reload Sling and test the same channel. If it works, turn extensions back on one at a time to identify the conflict.
Use the reversible off switch rather than removing an extension. Microsoft documents the process in its guide to adding, turning off, or removing Edge extensions. Some work or school computers may restrict these controls.
Update Edge, then clear Sling’s stored browser data
Install available Edge updates
- Open the Edge menu (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow any available update to install, relaunch Edge, and retry the same channel.
Sling recommends the latest Edge release; there is no useful fixed build number to quote because versions change. See Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance for browser updates and related checks.

Clear cached files before clearing cookies
- In Edge, open … > History > Open history page > Delete browsing data.
- Set Time range to All time, select Cached images and files, and choose Clear now.
- Restart Edge, sign in to Sling again if needed, and test playback.
Clearing cached files tests whether stale player assets are involved. If the problem persists, clearing cookies or Sling site data is a broader next test for a damaged session or site state; it can sign you out of Sling and other websites. Avoid clearing all browsing data until you are ready to sign in again. Microsoft describes browsing-data options in its Edge troubleshooting guide.
Compare another browser, device, or network
Change one variable at a time where possible: test the same channel, account, and network in another supported browser on the same computer; then compare with the Sling app on another device. Sling says it works in supported browsers including Chrome, Edge, or Safari; availability depends on the device and platform. Its supported-device directory lists device options.

| What happens | Likely direction to investigate |
|---|---|
| One channel fails across devices; other channels play | Channel feed or channel-specific delivery issue; report the channel and time to Sling. |
| All channels fail only in Edge | Edge profile, extension, cached data, browser compatibility, or graphics/display path. |
| Edge and another browser fail on the same computer | Network, computer, display path, account, or Sling service. |
| Sling works on another device on the same network | Original computer, Edge installation, or its display setup. |
| Sling fails on every tested device and network | Account, subscription entitlement, or Sling-side problem; ask Sling to check. |
| Audio plays but video remains black | Prioritize extension and display/rendering checks; this pattern alone does not confirm a protected-content fault. |
These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not confirmed diagnoses. Testing another browser on the same computer changes fewer variables than switching both device and network at once. If you watch Freestream, a successful test there does not necessarily verify the entitlement or playback path for a particular paid live channel.

A black video surface with working controls or audio can point toward a rendering or display-path issue, but the symptom does not prove that DRM or HDCP is responsible. This becomes worth investigating if you use multiple monitors, a USB-C dock, HDMI adapter or splitter, capture device, remote desktop, screen recorder, or graphics overlay.

- Close screen-recording software, game or GPU overlays, capture tools, and remote-desktop sessions.
- Disconnect the second monitor, dock, capture device, or HDMI adapter temporarily. Test Sling on the computer’s primary display.
- If the stream works on the primary display, reconnect the external screen directly if possible, then try a different cable or port. Retest before restoring a dock or splitter.
- Restart Edge and, if the issue began after a Windows or browser update, restart the computer as well.
- Only as a later diagnostic, try Edge’s graphics-acceleration setting if it is available in your current version. Relaunch Edge and compare the same stream, then restore the original setting if there is no improvement or performance gets worse.
Changing graphics acceleration can affect performance and video behavior, so it is not a universal fix. Microsoft has documented a historical Edge DRM playback error for Netflix versions before 89.0.715.0, but that is not evidence of a current Sling-specific DRM defect: Microsoft’s Netflix error note. Do not change experimental edge://flags settings as a routine fix; they can change between versions and may create new problems.
Repair Edge only after simpler tests
If Sling still fails only in Edge after profile, extension, update, cache, network, and display checks, Microsoft’s repair option is less disruptive than jumping straight to a reinstall:
- Close Edge.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select Microsoft Edge > Modify, approve the prompt, then select Repair.
- When repair completes, open Edge and test Sling again.
Microsoft says an internet connection is required and browser data and settings should not be affected. On an organization-managed computer, Modify may be unavailable. See the repair instructions in Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting page.
When to contact Sling
Contact Sling if the same channel remains black after trying another channel, or if the problem follows your account across devices or networks. Sling provides troubleshooting and support options, including its chatbot, through its troubleshooting page.
Before contacting support, collect the details that distinguish a channel, account, network, browser, or display problem:
Quick Recap
- Edge version, listed under Settings > About Microsoft Edge, and your Windows version.
- Computer model and GPU, if known.
- Whether one channel or all channels fail, and whether audio continues.
- Whether InPrivate, disabling extensions, another browser, another device, or another network changes the result.
- Whether a monitor, dock, HDMI adapter, capture device, or screen-recording software is involved.
- The time and timezone of the failure, any error code, and a screenshot if it does not reveal private account information.
