That is Hawk’s explanation as quoted by TV Insider, not an independently verified financial analysis or confirmation of a single cause. The original eight-season run ended in October 2023; Warner Bros. Discovery later announced a special limited season for August 2024.
What did Mina Starsiak Hawk say about Good Bones ending?
In remarks discussed on her Mina AF podcast, Hawk said “the finances weren’t making sense,” according to TV Insider’s March 6, 2024 report. She explained that she was the only person who owned the company, while many of the people viewers saw on the show were not employed by it. Her account describes why continuing the series did not work for her; it is not a published accounting of the show’s finances.
Hawk also described the strain of continuing under those circumstances. TV Insider quoted her saying, “There was also this thing happening in the background because I was the only one that owned the company, where no one else gave a s***,” before she said it was too much to keep going. That is Hawk’s blunt characterization, not independent evidence about other participants’ motives.
What role did family tensions play?
Good Bones followed Hawk and her mother, Karen E. Laine, renovating homes in Indianapolis. The show’s warm mother-daughter presentation led some viewers to assume their relationship was uniformly harmonious. TV Insider reported that Hawk discussed audience reactions when viewers learned their private relationship was more complicated.
Family tension is part of the context Hawk addressed, but the available account does not establish it as the sole reason the show ended. Her stated financial concern and the reported reaction to the family dynamic should not be collapsed into one definitive explanation.
When did the original series end, and did it return?
TV Insider reported that the original run concluded after its eighth season in October 2023. In July 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery announced a special limited season under the Good Bones title, with a planned premiere of August 14, 2024. That later programming was presented as limited, not as a return to the original ongoing format.

Earlier, Hawk described Good Bones: Risky Business as a six-episode spinoff about renovating one rundown Indianapolis mansion. It was a separate format and preceded the original series’ ending; it does not change the distinction between the eight-season run and the later limited season.

HGTV describes the series as following Laine and Starsiak as they revitalized Indianapolis one property at a time. Its focus on renovations gave the mother-daughter partnership a central role, but the financial explanation Hawk later offered concerned the company structure behind the show as well as what appeared on screen.
