Race For The Crown is a six-episode Netflix documentary series following jockeys, trainers and owners on the U.S. Triple Crown trail. Its reported jockey cast includes 12 named riders, among them Frankie Dettori, Katie Davis, Brian Hernandez Jr. and Umberto Rispoli. The series follows a season-long racing story; it is not simply a documentary about the 2025 Kentucky Derby.
What is Race For The Crown about?
Netflix describes Race For The Crown as a 2025 documentary series in six episodes. It follows jockeys, trainers and owners pursuing success in the Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse racing. The season’s race arc moves from the Breeders’ Cup and the road to the Kentucky Derby through the Derby, Preakness and Belmont. Netflix’s series page provides the official synopsis and episode information.
The people on screen come from different parts of the sport: jockeys ride the horses, while trainers and owners shape the horses’ preparation and campaigns. The series centers on that wider racing world rather than on jockeys alone.

The report highlights contrasts in their backgrounds, including Kentucky-based riders alongside California- and East Coast-based jockeys. It also sets an established international star such as Dettori against the career-building story it describes for Davis. It does not provide a complete biography for every participant, so the list identifies the reported jockey cast rather than serving as a full guide to each rider’s career. The cast report discusses the named riders and their backgrounds.
Is the series about the 2025 Kentucky Derby?
The Derby is one part of the series’ broader Triple Crown arc, not its sole subject. Netflix’s episode outline places it alongside the Breeders’ Cup, the run-up to the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont.
The 151st Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs on May 3, 2025. Sovereignty won with Junior Alvarado aboard, finishing the 1¼-mile race in 2:02.31 on a sloppy track. Churchill Downs reported attendance of over 147,000. Churchill Downs’ race report records the winning result and race details.

Being named in the series cast does not mean a jockey rode in that specific Derby. One direct connection in the official result is Umberto Rispoli, who rode Journalism to second place behind Sovereignty. The winner was ridden by Junior Alvarado, who is not among the 12 jockeys in the published cast list. The official Kentucky Derby results list the finishers and their jockeys.
