Drake removed “Taylor Made Freestyle” from his social-media accounts after Tupac Shakur’s estate threatened legal action over an AI-generated imitation of Shakur’s voice. The public record shows a cease-and-desist demand and a subsequent removal—not a filed lawsuit, court ruling, or disclosed settlement.
What happened with “Taylor Made Freestyle”
Drake posted “Taylor Made Freestyle” on April 19, 2024, during his public feud with Kendrick Lamar. The diss track used AI-generated vocal imitations of Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. The Associated Press placed it after Drake’s “Push Ups” and before Lamar’s “Euphoria” in that exchange.
Billboard reported that Drake later removed the track from his social accounts after the Tupac estate’s legal threat. Representatives for Drake and the estate declined to comment after the removal.
The estate’s demand letter
Howard E. King, the estate’s lawyer, sent Drake a letter dated April 24, 2024. It demanded written confirmation by noon Pacific on April 25 that the recording had been removed from platforms Drake controlled, along with efforts to remove it elsewhere.

What legal theories did the estate raise?
| Claim discussed in the letter | What it focused on | Status in the public record |
|---|---|---|
| Publicity or personality rights | Control over Tupac’s identity, voice and persona, including the possibility that listeners could think he or the estate endorsed the lyrics. | An allegation and threatened claim by the estate; no court ruling established liability. |
| Copyright | Possible use of recordings owned by the estate as inputs or source material for creating the imitation. | Raised as a potential claim; the reporting does not establish what recordings or data were actually used. |
These theories are legally distinct. Publicity-rights disputes generally concern commercial or misleading use of a person’s identity, while the copyright issue described in the letter concerned possible use of protected recordings. Billboard noted uncertainty about how existing law would apply to AI-generated vocals in a creative work.
Did Tupac’s estate sue Drake?
The reviewed reporting documents a demand letter threatening a lawsuit, not a filed complaint. It also does not report a judicial decision or a disclosed settlement. Drake’s removal of the track therefore cannot, by itself, establish that the AI imitation was unlawful or that the estate’s claims would have succeeded.

What remains unknown
- The AI system or service used to create either vocal imitation has not been identified in the reviewed coverage.
- No source establishes who operated the system or what training data it used.
- The estate’s letter said the record had generated “well more than one million streams,” but that is the estate’s assertion rather than an independently verified figure.
- The sources do not establish whether any later agreement, payment or other resolution occurred.
Why the removal mattered
The episode became an early, high-profile test of how estates, artists and platforms might respond when generative audio imitates a recognizable performer. It also highlighted a practical distinction: removing a post after a legal demand can limit exposure or avoid a dispute, but it is not a legal determination that the underlying work infringed someone’s rights.
